What did you rap off, Sky? Looks like a buried tree in that one pic, but I can't really tell.

Exactly what I was thinking... "Observers were solemn and quiet before and during the jump, he said, and Pierre said a prayer before taking off. He clocked four full seconds of air time, Nielsen said. Some 100 feet into the jump he said Pierre could not keep his skis under him and went upside down. He landed head first and blew a hole six feet deep in the snow." So if I attached some water skis to my feet and jumped 200 feet head first into the snow, could I be the first person to waterski it? I do like the tennis shoe idea however - that would be a feat!

$60 is the cheapest keg!?!? Damn, beer is expensive there. We can get kegs of shitty Keystone Light for like $39.99 and occasionally a bit cheaper on megasale.

If they are so great, why did they go out of business? Anybody that would pay $100+ for a set off a few stoppers let me know - I could use that money. -josh

It seems as if the majority of the embittered right wingers have dissapeared - perhaps due to a complete lack of ability to back up the current administration any more?

Stephen, I was thinking the exact same with regard to being better than a tarp or bivy tent. I am actually looking to use mine for solo trips mostly, where the 4 1/2 lbs of my MK1XL seems a bit much. I would imagine with just one of me in the Firstlight I will have much less problems in the way of condensation and staying away from the walls. Sounds like it is at least worth a shot, esp. since I know I won't encounter rain. -josh
-
I did seamseal the entire tent, guypoints included. I guess the only way I will find out is if I try it...I can always do the middle of the night "I hate life" bailout to a lower elevation in the trees if the situation became desperate.

Somebody's post about using a firstlight in the cdn rockies made me wonder just how good (or bad) these tents are in wind. I was thinking of trying mine out in the cold and moderately dry Colorado Rockies climate since there won't be any chance of rain. My concern is how it would hold up in the wind since it seems to always be windy in the mountains here. Anybody try it or have any info on this? thanks, -josh

Haul skis up so you don't have to slog down the C/D. We did and it was nice blowing bye all the poor sloggers who were postholing up to their knees!

What did you ski up there Sky?

I have no experience with sleds other than nearly killing myself on them as a kid but I have heard from manny that the type of terrain you will cross will have a bearing. Apparently if you are on almost all terrain where you are going up or down the fall line, you can get away with a cheap sled. I've heard that some sort of side slip resistent rails or something is helpful if you will be dragging the sled on traverses where the fall line is perpendicular to you. Without some sort of side slip stability the sled will constantly want to pull downhill. This is just what I have heard.

You can climb pretty much anything when doing the NR. You can go straight up the summit ice cap if you want. If you take the easiest line it should be quite easy.

Huh, definitely said -26 for "yesterday" the day after you posted. In any event, i was just giving you shit - changing anything in any temperature in that range has to be major unpleasentness. I remember carting out giant pots of boiling water in the cdn rockies to attempt to remove some of the packed on snow and ice from the inside of my wheels to get rid of the horrible ice packed wheel vibration.
-
So is the obvious broad rocky ugly shoulder the success cleaver itself? I have had some interest in the cleaver for a while due to its looong ridge up to the summit and lack of glacier travel.

I played around with one of those "rangefinder" cams at a gear store the other day. What a STUPID idea that is. First off, it seemed to me that some of the placement range within the "green" zone wasn't actually a very good placement as they cams were nearly bottomed out. I think that anybody who needs a feature like that honestly has zero business leading on rock. In any event, yeah, that is a great deal.

http://www.weather.com/activities/other/other/weather/yesterday.html?locid=USAK0083&stn=1 The records show that the low temperature yesterday in fairbanks was only -26F.

I agree with Dru. The larger tricams aren't very useful, but those 4 smallest have come in handy quite a few times. I like the pink one in particular (hardy fucking har...) as it seems to be the perfect size for tons of cracks.

I dont see the problem with carrying a cell phone. Carrying it does not imply using it. It dosen't upset my "middle of nowhere, nobody but myself" feeling. The only thing I would ever use it for is to let somebody know I was late to avoid needless worry and an unnessecary rescure attempt. With that said, cell phones still don't work very many places other than some of the higher summits.

-30C? Sounds like a nice day of climbing in the Canadian Rockies. I couldn't believe how amazingly warm 0C felt after a day of -30C. I could have walked around in shorts.

Hmm...seriously, what a sketchy site. I'll take one Bibler Tent, a Grappling Hook and a Clock Radio Cam please! All the gear you need to survive the wilderness and illegally spy on others in one easy stop!

Man, not letting the guy watch the SB is pretty mean tho! Poor bastard.

#1 - Report indicates this was a skier. #2 - KEEP THE FUCKING SKIS IN THE MOGUL FIELDS. Keep the snowboards on the groomed runs and out of the backcountry then. Then we can all get along. Last time I checked it was skis that have been used since long before the modern era to traverse snow in the B/C and snowboards that remain akward, slow and inconvenient in the B/C.

[TR] French Pyrenees- Bielsa Dorada Wall 1/15/2006

sweet! I miss the French! Oh wait...nevermind, I don't... -
I recently started wearing an avalung. I figure the difference between even 20 and 30 minutes when your partner is furiously digging (hopefully) could make a big difference in whether you survive or not. I wonder if getting caught in a tree well sucks more as a snowboarder since you are completely attached to the board??
