  1. Climb: South Sister Slogalicious- Date of Climb: 5/31/2004 Trip Report: We left Willamette Valley iffy weather behind Sunday night... ...and headed for Bend and sunnier climes. A Hot Wheels sticker was our lucky charm: Started skinning around 5:30am and found fine views soonafter: Snowmachiners who cross wilderness boundaries ought to be publicly pissed on. Despite the firm snow the skinning was mostly good: Hmmm, I could be pond skimming at Batchy right about now. The top consisted of classic Cascade chicken head rime but quickly changed to something more skiable: Beers and some chilly water capped off a memorable Memorial day: Gear Notes: Forgot my shades in the car. Approach Notes: There's still enough snow to ski to the highway. Ran into Lane & Agatha!
  2. This made my eyes pop and brain spin as reported in the NYT one week ago: "In Oklahoma, Mr. Berg's e-mail password was obtained by an associate of Zacarias Moussaoui. Mr. Moussaoui, who is awaiting trial on charges of assisting the Sept. 11 plot, attended flight school in Norman in 2001, but it is not clear that he ever met Mr. Berg." Here's the link to the news piece. Little is what it seems.
  3. I played rugby in Domes. Only on really shitty pitches such as the glass and gravel strewn ones on Randall's Island in Manhattan and semi-frozen New England ones in November. Apparently they still sell the shoe in the UK and a limitied edition model stateside. Those shoes lasted a while.
  4. "Spanish porno from the reign of Phillip II" "Evonne, Renae, Loretta and What the Parrot Saw." (kudos to Monty Python) "Ejacula" "Bimbo Bowlers From Buffalo."
  5. I like the new small Sony for a point & shoot. I carry two batteries. For the higher end I'm jonesing for this puppy. Not many prosumer digi cams have such a wide angle lens.
  6. I think I've been had by www.networkgeek.com. The photo I INTENDED to post was of a hippie d00d holding up a little fish. A small version can be seen here. I've got nothing against Phish though am not much of a fan. I did have a blast seeing them in a barn in VT once in college. To networkgeek's credit, this is a nice resource page!
  7. Brower, David R. (Editor) Manual of Ski Mountaineering Berkeley University Of California 1942 Three years ago I purchased a copy of this edition and to my surprise, and perhaps the sellers too, the book contained a typed note with UC Berkeley Press letterhead that is signed by David Brower. The letter thanks the doctor who authored the chapter on frostbite. I'm not sure but I think the Manual was used for training at Camp Hale in Pando, CO. Pretty neat imho.
  8. There's still bamboo left if anyone wants some. It's healthy and will thrive in full sun with adequate watering.
  9. We're going to replant as much of the stuff as we can. The stand is not too big. Say 12'x4' with some culms 12'-16' tall. The carbide tipped chainsaws and sawzalls will be left at home.
  10. We need help removing a healthy 12 ft. or so tall bamboo stand in SE Portland Thursday. Mañana! It's not timber bamboo it's fishing pole particularly Phyllostachys aurea (Golden Bamboo). The reward is free bamboo that otherwise goes for $75 per 12" container. PM me for details.
  11. Whining sux imo. I got no beef with REI. Where they lack the smaller and more specialized stores pick up the slack. They just managed a SPEEDY repair of my one year-old Lowe Contour 40 pack that severely failed me on top of høød the other day. In fact they, or should I say their sewing guru in Vancouver, WA, even placed a heavier guage zipper on the thing for no charge. They don't stock a lot of specialty gear these days, but when I can I buy there I do because of their top notch repair and returns policy for members.
  12. #1. #2's highlights are blown out. At least on my monitor.
  13. fwiw there were sizeable slabs off west crater rim and the hogsback on the south side of høød last thurs. it appeared as if they went sometime wed. crowns looked 6"-1' though we didn't inspect closely. also, there was a slab off the west side of i-rock that carried over the cliffs in the middle of the reid. the debris pile went well into the sandy canyon.

    red vs. blue

red vs. blue This stuff is hilarious imo. You need Quicktime to view the above link.
  15. The gate opened Tuesday. We hoofed it much further than I have in the past and as a result I wouldn't recommend the tour anymore this season. Shwacking can be fun though! Check Timmay entering the alder & devil's club patch that took us about 40 min. to navigate: If only his ma had heard the filth spewing from his piehole. And a big THANK YOU to the couple who found my gps on the road out and brought it to us in the parking lot. You folks !
  16. If you park at Marble Mountain you want the Swift Creek Trail.
  17. I'm 5'11" and the bike's a tad too big unfortunately. It's o.k. for cruising town but not my cup of Darjeeling for steep single track, the firelanes in Forest Park, etc. The bike's in NE PDX if ya wanna take it for a spin.
  18. TREK Alpha 4500 Mountain Bike Aluminum frame, Size: 19.5" Component Group: Shimano Alivio, Rock Shox Judy II front shock Selling without the pedals Purchased at an auction last year, only ridden twice, in great condition, but too big for me! Price: $250 OBO
  19. Photo of the day: The Onbashira Festival looks like fun. Dunno about the log ride at this 1,200 year old festival though.
  20. Way to go dog! Sure is bootyful up there. Endless peaks and steeps!
