Its true, jordop's shot of that new canadian classic route wouldn't be nearly as effective without Mr. Layton in the frame. Actually, the soloing shot that made an impression on me was Krakauer's photo down between his feet on his attempt on the witches cauldron side of Devil's Thumb, all the more effective and bleak in black and white.
  2. Tricky: I tried that one by myself early this season and reached the end of my comfort level about a third of the way up. I think I did not locate the correct ledge to continue traversing across the next waterfall groove, and wound up heading up into steepening rock/cedar/moss that inspired me to stop. Later on I realized you could get a good scope on the route by driving on up the road and scanning with binoculars. Its a great looking side of the mountain, but I've never been there late season.
  3. It seems to me that one of the principal drawbacks to soloing is that you have no one to say "whoa, isn't this cool" to. Three-ceeing the gendarme pitches is kinda bold, but as I'm sure Retro is aware, the North Ridge gets soloed on a reasonably regular basis, so my sense is that he just had a great time, and it only underlines the experience to tell someone else about it.
  4. I believe its more real than the Fairwood Crag. Ask around at the climbing shop in Port Angeles.
  5. Yup, the bad guys suck, but this thread sounded so much more interesting when I thought it was RURP's self-realized ultimate personality confession
  6. Yeah, just what do you think his hands are doing in his pockets? "Gosh Jim, I just can't believe they feel so real!"
  7. Uhh, I don't get it, is the boat show in Switzerland this year?
  8. Ahhh, so its a pika from the eastern side of the range then.
  9. DFA, the delay was probably just Raleigh chiselling his employer, since he was already planning on being the oppostion. You know, encourage the mail room staff to spend their time spraying online instead of sending out the next issue

    Roll the Credits...

Well, on the plus side, you gotta admit the "sweet granite in renton" was a skillfully executed hoax. Hey, I bet this is the guy who moved ehmmic's truck! Hoaxster without pity. Truth be told though, you sound like the classic binge and purge case. You've already tried CA, Cascadeclimbers Anonymous, and apparently Trask was not enough of a higher power for you. Sooner or later the craving will overcome your self-loathing and you will fall off the wagon again only to wallow in some other ill-advised faux monniker. Your only hope is to come out of the closet and start posting in your own name, to abandon your childish dissembling and learn to speak in your own voice. Cmon dude, one avatar at a time.
  13. You tell me Capt, is it cheastbeating or merely smug & gloating? Sounds like a damn fine trip, show a few choice pictures when you get a chance.
  14. Hey professor, thats some good scholarship. Seems to me that N. Ridge of Fury gets a slightly reworded similar treatment. Maybe Beckey didn't invent the "rather select group" phrase, but surely he is the original source of "pure joy and distinctly alpine" (my personal favorite Beckeyism).
  15. Its an interesting question. I'm not aware of there having been a bouldering "scene" back then, it wasn't really thought of as a discrete discipline but rather as just another thing you did that wasn't terribly significant. You know, just for fun. I'd guess the names could be anyone who was a prominent local climber at the time. If Darryl Cramer checks in to this thread, I'll wager he might have a good sense of the history of it. Dick Cilly is a good suggestion, he was certainly an early proponent of short and hard. I was wondering the other day where he had gotten to lately, I probably haven't seen him in a decade but if he was around here I'd think his savage sense of humor would fit right in on this board.
  16. Yeah, it does. I actually meant to imply wry envy via a sarcastic aside comment to you, not actually slam anyone. Conversation is tough to do with a keyboard and no vocal tone or facial expression. Skip's list was a barebones outline of a road trip I can only wish I'd done.
  17. quote: Originally posted by Cpt.Caveman: Off White you are annoying. I think I have the right to say whatever I want. Kiss it OWhitey Well hell Caveman, its not as if annoying you is any kind of a challenge. For the record, I was engaging in light conversational banter and not commenting on what you have a right to say. I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but what you heard is not what I meant. But hey little buddy, if you really want a size 12 kiss on your dumptruck then just back it on up over here
  18. The only time I've used chicken wire up there was at the Bugaboos, and there was plenty to choose from in the bushes at the parking area. No promises though... The posture on that photo looks like it's shot at the correct angle, the feet are pretty level. I hadn't thought the ice on Alberta (N Face?) was that steep though.

  20. Yah, what Heywood said. Now I probably owe Fairweather an apology too...
  21. upperdecker = fairweather's trolling rig?
  22. quote: Originally posted by Dru: why not just tell us which files you burned of gnutella and we can copy our own? Okay, here's a track listing: RING OF FIRE – wall of voodoo (johnny cash) UNDER MY THUMB – social distortion (rolling stones) VOODOO CHILD (SLIGHT RETURN) – angelique kidjo (jimi hendrix) PETER GUNN – the hellecasters (henry mancini) COUNTRY ROADS – toots & the maytals (john denver) HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE - the slits (marvin gaye) GET READY – giant sand (rare earth) YOUR TIME IS GONNA COME – dread zepplin (led zepplin) HAZY SHADE OF WINTER – the bangles (simon & garfunkl) SECRET AGENT MAN – the plugz (johnny rivers) SEASONS IN THE SUN – me first & the gimme gimmes (terry jacks) COME AS YOU ARE – laura love (nirvana) MY SHARONA – nirvana (the knack) SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT – the flying pickets (nirvana) LINEMAN FOR THE COUNTY – naked prey (glen campbell) SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO – the picketts (the clash) AMAZING GRACE – dropkick murphys (traditional) HEIGH HO (THE DWARF’S SONG) – tom waits (walt disney soundtrack) HEARTBREAK HOTEL – king & moore (elvis presley) CAN’T EXPLAIN – the spells (the who) GIN & JUICE – the gourds (snoop doggy dog) SATISFACTION – cat power (rolling stones) You're right, I only own official versions of ten of the twenty two tracks, and several of those are vinyl. I was never a gnutella fan though, I was much more into the glory that was the unfettered Napster. Hunt down the tracks and burn your own copy, you'll save fifty cents! The selection criteria were that the original song had to be recognizable to a mass audience, the cover had to be a significant reinterpretation, and the songs had to have something going for them that would bear repeat listening. Style-wise this one is all over the map, not just a bunch of punk covers of old songs. Its not any kind of promotion or profit venture, I just had the urge to share one of my obsessions, and didn't want to be deluged by all 2500 odd (nudge nudge) members (wink wink) that might respond if it was "free." Musical Offer

Wearying of the chasms of politics and climbing style, I've decided to make moves towards unity, and what better medium than music? I confess I've made a near fetish of the cleverly crafted music compilation, and I think The Sincerest Form of Flattery is the best I've ever done. Its a collection of covers that will offer something for anyone from Dwanyner (classic rock fogey) to Dr. Flash Amazing (punk motherfucker). PM me and I'll give you my address, you'll send me one slim dollar to cover cd replication and postage, and I'll send you one fine slab of sonic brilliance guaranteed to provide the soundtrack for your next trip to the crag.
  24. Eeeuwww, then that makes Erik way grosser than even Trask aspires to be! On the serious side, condolences Jon, mine's dead too, though it happened long ago when I was 18.
  25. quote: Originally posted by Dwayner: Most of these hate-spoutin', flag-burnin', anti-American 3rd-World types can't afford a bus ticket to the next village, nonetheless, come over here and make mayhem. Thats the line that made me think you were speaking about immigrants, perhaps you were unclear. And I just wanted to inject a little fact into the classic rant about "the government giving our money away to them miserable bastids over there" and how we are SO generous, when in fact, we're not. I'm not advocating one way or another right now, I'm just trying to point out what is, versus the political myth about how generous the US is. Its like McDonalds trumpeting about changing their fryer oil and at what fabulous cost, when the actual total dollar cost is high but the per unit cost is a fraction of a cent. What exactly those US aid dollars are doing is a different topic, and I don't have any ready facts this morning. I have a sense we tend to prop up the status quo in regimes we deem "on our side" for strategic reasons when we could be doing more to promote democracy, which would do more to give that guy on the street a voice about who's doing what with the money. But, as I said, I don't have any figures handy so I'm just talking through my hat, and damn but its Monday morning and I gotta get to working... Oh, and Dwayner, I know you've done more 3rd world travel than I have, I'd love to hear your observations on it some time, at pub club if not in print. Until Mickey time...
