Santee is great, and East Santee (aka Magnolia) is also good, but more obscure. I gather most of the boulders in the San Diego River bottom below Mission Gorge have been closed, which is a pity, but there are a few good things on the approach to Middle Earth there. Or for another flavor try the soft sandstone on the beach between La Jolla Cove and The Children's Cove. If its warm, it'll be fun, though the rock is soft, rounded, and changes every season. Sometimes in the winter the sand washes away, leaving a beach full of boulders, which is considerably less attractive as a landing surface. Low tide is better too.

Dru is pretty close, my first shot was Stone Groove in Yosemite, and the picture in question was a small shot of Bridwell protecting it with pins on the lead in Yosemite Climber. Excellent visual memory sir! Here's another vintage shot, not as far afield

only a few million. Current San Diego County guidebook has a number of areas, and I believe Specialed is down there these days, so he may be able to hook you up.

Dru's basalt one looks Vantage like to me: Smith basalt is blacker, and Tieton is different rock. Could be some other piece of desert rimrock out around Warm Springs, but that stuff wouldn't have the traffic...

Yes Dru, he was. My sloppiness with file name should push you over the edge of success, even without searching your library for that venerable tome...

Here's one, dig those bell bottoms, eb's, and impeccable 1977 trad style. Here's a hint: there is a published picture of Jim Bridwell leading this route in roughly this location (though from a different perspective and not dangling)

Weather's not bad, even if you don't climb anything you could hardly go wrong getting out and about. It'd be a nice time of year for a first visit.

I spawned this additional bitch bitch bitch thread off the one in the Climber's Board.

Dang Trask, have you been caught & released so many times that you've come to savor the hook?

Here's the flipside of Freeclimb's.... Becky was on her deathbed, with her husband Jake at her side. He held her cold hand and tears silently streamed down his face. Her pale lips moved. "Jake," she said. "Hush," he quickly interrupted, "don't talk." But she insisted. "Jake," she said in her tired voice. "I have to talk. I must confess." "There is nothing to confess," said the weeping Jake. "It's all right. Everything's all right." "No, no. I must die in peace. I must confess, Jake, that I have been unfaithful to you." Jake stroked her hand. "Now, Becky, don't be concerned. I know all about it", he sobbed. --- "Why else would I poison you?

the promised bear joke... A Russian scientist and a Czechoslovakian scientist had spent their whole lives studying the majestic grizzly bear. Each year they petitioned their respective governments to allow them to go to Yellowstone to study these wondrous beasts. Finally, their request was granted and they immediately flew to New York and then west to Yellowstone. They reported to the local ranger station and were told that it was the grizzly mating season and it was much too dangerous to go out and study the animals. They pleaded that this was their only chance. Finally the ranger relented. The Russian and the Czech were given cell phones and told to report in each day. For several days they called in, and then nothing was heard from the two scientists. The rangers mounted a search party and found the scientists' camp completely ravaged. There was no sign of the missing men. They then followed the trail of a male and a female bear. They found the female and decided they must kill the animal to find out if she had eaten the scientists, because they feared an international incident. They killed the female and cut open the bear's stomach and, sure enough, found the remains of the Russian. One ranger turned to the other and said, "You know what this means, don't you?" "Of course," the other ranger nodded. "The Czech is in the male."

I wasn't aware of the policy, and while it makes sense, the details confound me just a little. As Dru just mentioned, is VIMFF verboten? What about the Icefest, its not free is it? We had a notice up for a bouldering contest too, don't those usually have entry fees? I understand the "no free advertising for someone else's pockets" sentiment completely, but I know I'd be unlikely to find out about any of these things unless they show up here.

Thanks Sisu, I really needed a joke today. Of course, no educated atheist would expect anything else from a christian bear, but its a great punchline. I've got another bear joke for you I'll write up a little later.

I saw a 6 day forecast last night on snow-forecast.com that suggests come Wednesday one might find clear/cold conditions, with highs around 12 at the ski area. That might make for a little fun on Hood. Of course, long range forecasts are only so good, and this winter has not been conducive to getting your hopes up.

Mattp, is that Washington from Ellinor?
-
Did we ever get an answer on Bill Simpkins wintry shot looking down on a climber? Forrest is so right, it does get confusing. Kind of like alpine route finding. Which obvious gully?
-
Forrest & Mattp: Washington Pass is the right area, Clean Break is not the right route.

Dru only read the first paragraph.

thanks, I could never get imperial gallons straight either.

Here's another, in the spirit of Dru's earlier butt shot, but I'd wager at least 50 people on this board have been up this stellar pitch.

Well, a mile or two would put you on Torment, but I can't figure the route, approaching the NW ridge? The second shoot could be looking across the scoop of the SE face of Torment..
