LAME It's an open source code for encoding MP3's

You probably never liked speed either. Batdorf & Bronson on Capitol in Olympia is pretty damn great.
-
You'll find .flac files and such on Usenet as well.

I agree with Ken that they're heavy bulky objects, and there are a number of other options out there, but Pindude is right too. I never had problems rappelling with them, and the key to belaying with an eight is as he described, send a bight through the small hole and clip a carabiner through it, like a bulky off balance sticht plate. It's not my instrument of choice these days, but I don't have any problems with them. Say what you want about carabiner brakes and the dulfersitz, they're good things to know, along with how to do a decent hip belay. Ever drop your ATC? A well rounded climber needs to have more than one trick in the bag.

Does Itunes do that digital rights thing? Is it a subscriber service or a store? If it's a store, then you've actually purchased the song, and the problem may be in your player. I've tried two paid sources in the past. Rhapsody sucks, you subscribe and get unlimited access, but pretty much can only listen to it on your computer, like a radio station you program yourself, but it won't let you record or burn the material. Seems you only download 99% of the song, and the remaining bit comes when you're logged in. This is a Real Networks product, one of those companies that want to invade your computer and change the file associations so that you use their product to do everything. Comically, it's very difficult to unsubscribe. You can't do it online, finding the phone number is difficult, and invariably you wind up speaking to someone in India who has an exit interview script where they try to squeeze information out of you and won't just cancel your account when you tell them to cancel it. I'd say avoid Rhapsody like the plague, but your mileage may vary. Emusic is alright, a fair selection of indie type stuff that I tend to listen to. They have plans where you pay a set amount and get a certain number of songs. Cost per song gets cheaper the larger the plan you buy. The real goldmine is in the Usenet newsgroups. You'll need to do a little research since you'll need both a newsgroup reader and usually a separate account with a service that provides storage and access, but the amount and breadth of stuff out there is staggering. For about $10 you can download 25GB of stuff a month, and that's a lot of music. It's almost too much, downloading a dozen unfamiliar albums a night means it floods in at a rate too great to even assess if what you've got is any good. There's a lot of other free stuff out there too, from labels, bands, distributors, and the like on the web. You should take the time to get a little more high tech with your acquistion, it's not really very complicated, and downloading and your device are two different subjects.

Well, we've all got to work with what we've got, eh? Until you began expressing your hurt feelings it hadn't occurred to me to care. Silly as it may seem, I actually looked into your allegations, which was what led to to wonder what was your "first" post. Frankly, I don't see that your complaint has much merit, but my links will allow others to come to their own conclusions. It reminds me of the Repo Man scene with Duke on the floor in the convenience store, "Society made me what I am."

Sorry if it's unclear, I was addressing Pink, not you.
-
Your first post? Do you mean this one or this one? It wasn't until reading your indignant complaint here and looking at Pink's first post that I made the connection. Frankly, both avatars come straight out the gate looking to spray, and when things went south with your bit about Beacon you led the way, the first person to get all aggro and testy about it.

Kevbone, word on the street is that one of the site owners is tired of your drivel. Above the Law indeed. I suspect that if you keep up the constant flood of whining you will be euthanized. Were you under the impression that life is fair?

Sounds wild, I trust you'll post up some more pics? Here's a link to a quasi-on topic music video

Not that I'm aware of, but go check it out. Marching around in the woods will at the very least keep you out of trouble. Maybe you'll find a motherlode like Kix found on Tiger Mountain.

Don't forget John Darnielle

No Steve, my sister was a crackhead, not a meth user.

There's always Meth, though you might want to pay close attention to your dentition

Maybe we could not supersize Mr. Phil's avatar picture?

Any chance we could ratchet up the color intensity for the threads with new content? That yellow is a little pale. This'll take a little getting used to, and I'm among those who want my old skool style sheet back, but the function looks pretty good. Thanks for squandering part of your long weekend doing this.

(a digression from the topic at hand) John David Junior- Off White is what my family, my postman, my neighbors, my employees, and many of my friends call me. It's my name. I'm also a moderator in several forums here. My edited comments in Fairweather's first post are prefaced all in italics, and identified as mine. It should be clear what I'm saying. In addition, I consulted with Fairweather to make sure this was agreeable to him. As board policy, we prefer to have discussions of serious topics separate from obituary/tribute threads because due to the wonders of Google et. al., friends and relatives of the deceased often find their way here, as evidenced by the posts from Harvey's daughter and the friends and father of the woman who recently died descending Half Dome. Accidents and other deaths obviously offer ample opportunities for both learning and discussion, but it's a matter of respect to try and put those elsewhere. To that end, I moved Fairweather's interesting question and all it's replies to another forum to modify it, added my preface, and changed the thread title in everyone's post to differentiate this thread from Manning's obit (hence the "edited by off white" notice at the bottom of many posts). When done, I moved it back to the Climbers Board. The admonition to "keep it civil" relates to both the forum this thread is in (Climbers Board is very different from Spray, one is to be more polite here) as well as to address the tendency of several posters to toss barbs and insults at Fairweather because he's of a minority opinion conservative bent here. I'd prefer to see the topic addressed, not the personalities involved. If you feel otherwise, you are welcome to post your own thread in Spray and be as insulting as you wish, or go to another climbing bulletin board. There are a number of them in the Northwest alone, and surely New Jersey must have some regional boards as well.

I heard somewhere that Satriani taught Eddie how to play.

Fenderfour: Influential is not the same thing as copied. Hendrix to a large extent redefined what was possible with the electric guitar, and in some ways broke down the walls of the guitar box. In that sense, he is extremely influential, and it shows up not just in the music of Trey the unlistenable hippy, but in blues folks like Buddy Guy and Poppa Chubby, wierd crossover folks like Vernon Reid and John McLaughlin, jazz players like Kevin Eubanks and Miles Davis (who covered at least one Hendrix tune), and just a ton of folks in the rock world, including the bulk of the guitarists listed above. Just because every wannabe guitar player learns "House of the Rising Sun" doesn't mean that Eric Burdon is the godfather of modern rock.

Archenemy, I'm surprised that in your bass list you left off some of the easy picks: James Jamerson Jaco McCartney (much as the guy can be insufferably sappy, he did a lot to establish the bass as a melodic instrument) If you like a wizard with the upright, keep an eye out for Glenn Moore, plays in a local jazz duo King & Moore: you know, just bass & vocals? I saw them play at SAM and he was just stunning. Oooh, and I almost forgot: Sid Vicious, who perhaps singlehandedly started the myth that any no talent dumbfuck can play the bass.

I love rivers, so much more variable and entertaining than lakes or the Sound, but it'd sure be scary to live on one. It's mostly a question of when, not if. Outrageous pics Arch, thanks for posting those. Glad your abode survived this go round. Here's a pic of a friend of a friend's house on (errr, I mean in) the Cowlitz. It's come off the foundation and is on it's way downstream, a testament to the power of plywood sheathing.

My method is subjective and probably overly simplistic, but usually if I find myself spending any energy worrying about the piece of equipment, it's time to replace it.

Couldn't you two just do this via PM? Please?

Aren't Warthogs collectors items now, sought after as ideal pieces for frozen moss and dirt? Snargs were the cutting edge drive in and screw out pro for awhile back there, I don't think there's been anything hammer driven since then.
