I will be competing in a 100 mile mtn bike race in Vail at the end of August. I will be arriving one week early to see some friends and acclimate. During my week of acclimatization I will be staying at about 7k and am looking at some easy rides prior to the race to help with the altitude adjustment. My question/worry is, since I will be coming from sea level to 7k, then during the race up to almost 11k, severe performance level drop and altitude sickness. I know that from my climbing if I stay super hydrated, I normally don't feel any drop in perceived performance or even experience the typical headache that a lot of my climbing friends enjoy. I have heard, although I can't remember where, that you can train your body to absorb more water by gradually increasing you intake over a period of time. Does anyone know if this is true? It seems to me that your body/cells are like a sponge and that they can only hold so much of anything, once they are full, thats it, the body gets rid of the excess. OR, can you change/adjust your bodies "thinking"to make those cells expand (like the folds in your stomach) into holding more liquid? Other than continuing to increase my overall fitness and maintaining a high level of hydration are there any other methods of improving pre-race hydration to help deal with such exertion at this altitude?

Hey Shuks, what time are you thinking about running up? If it's early enough I might be able to squeeze that in. send me an email and let me know

Sky, don't forget to rest. Even though you might think that you need to ride a lot to improve or take you to the next level, rest between hard workouts can be the best solution. It's a tear down and rebuilding process that does not come quickly, but it will allow you to come back from a recovery session stronger than you went into it. Oh, and drink LOTS of water.

Weather is freakin awesome and I'm stuck in the office staring out the window with absolutely no hope of escape until 4:30 this afternoon. Boy how a sounds good right now.

Whatever! Having grown up in Seattle I can honestly say that one rainforest looks like just like the next. No chestbeating just a few people looking at attempting something fairly physically demanding. To each his own.
-
Some made it in under 24, others did not (I of which am one that did not). It's not a thing for the masses, only a personal choice, no chestbeating here, merely the physical challange.
-
ooohh crickey, I'm not sure that the masses can handle the full truth regarding the devastation and carnage that can only be call "The Bend Pole, Peddle, Paddle" Somethings are better left unsaid for the safety of those invloved and those that survived.

Depends on who you are asking timmy. I think Funguy and I have been talking about going the end of Aug / first of Sept. Although I think we have had a change of plans which now has us simply flying over the general region in a small plane in order to uphold the highest of - style and standards

Damn it!! work has got me tied up and now a friggin company dinner has been last minute scheduled for Wednesday night. Can't make the bbq, I was so looking forward to some of TG's brew, but I'm positive fun will be had by all regardless if I show my grubby mug

That's funny, That could be a new catch phrase "Dude, your story is bullshit, what are you trying to pull, a - or something"
-
don't understand why people don't want to ski with me, i'm a sexy bitch! Timmy, it's not that you don't have any friends, it's that we are all deathly afraid of the gigantic horsecock duct taped to your head

If Sassy's is close, then DOC's is also nearby another fine establishment of the dancing kind

52 miles out and back. Most prefer to do a shuttle. This is still a 26 mile ride. Park one car at the ranger station on 126, and another at fish lakes 26 miles up 126. Sky, what type of trail is it, how do I get there, shoot me a pm, I think I might like to do the 52 this weekend. thanks
-
DAMN! I wish I had known about this race sooner, I'm getting ready for this one www.mtbrace.com in August. Sounds like the CP100 would have been a good fitness gauge.
-
Iain, for us un-computer geeks, what the hell is a ClockSyncInst.exe?
-
I've never done the trail that way before. I ave always ridden it from the top down and back up. If you are interested in a ride give me a PM
-
Sounds good Pete, but since I haven't climbed for shit in the last month I guess I'll be kicking all yous asses at the putt putt and blame my shitty climbing on my stellar golf game.
-
How long is the Mck trail? Is it a loop or out-n-back?
-
I wouldn't mind having it at my place, unfortunately, it's small and not very easy to get to. BBQ sounds great though!
-
The trail starts at about 4200'and drops down to about 3000', unless you want to ride one way, then the last mile are so are really steep and you head down to something like 1500' elevation. The first 6 miles are super sweet, rolling single track, very smooth and fast. Then the next 6 miles (if riding to Bald Butte) are a mix of semi loose soil and big rocks. From Bald Butte take a break under the constantly buzzing power lines and return up the trail from which you came. A strong rider can ride all the hills coming home (of which I am not) round trip takes anywhere from 2.5-3 hours. I recommend the ride to anyone who has ridden or attempted to ride in a lava tube with a nalgene full of sweet, sweet beer.
-
Just in case anybody cared. I rode the Surveyors Ridge trail on Monday and it is in great condition and free of snow from top to bottom.
-
Like I said, I grew up with brothers, no sisters, not to mention most people who know me would say that I'm still a little punk, so no worries, it's all good.

Son for daughter, should be a pretty fair trade
