  8. is it light enough you can tear it in half in front of a bewildered rei customer service rep? i've managed to make one of those stupid cheap n' light rei day packs last for 2 years now - thing weighs nothing but holds the minimal shit you need for a multi-pitch climb - musta been fishing 30 butts a day out of the bottom of it on tangerine trip 35$ i think it is? and it comes in a pleasing variety of colors
  9. don't forget to bring the soundtrack to the protest [video:youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1M8vei3L0L8
  10. i heard from jeff thomas there was a memorial out there today. it sounds like this tragedy could have been prevented by the old standby of not unclipping your daisy from the anchor until after you've weighted and stressed your rap device. sucks that omitting such a simple thing can have such dire consequences
  11. found this pic - don't think i had the pleasure of making his acquaintance, a shame as he looked like a cool guy - i hate rappelling accidents and was damn lucky to have walked away from hopefully my last one

    It's funny

what species of animal doesn't occasionally go crazy and start killing its own? maybe marmots? course, sleeping for half the year helps...
  14. do you have a photo of him you could post here? i've run into so many people at beacon over the years and i never can remember a damn name. nothing to say at such times, so i'll go w/ my standard: "wise king, do not grieve. it is always better to avenge dear ones than to indulge in mourning. for everyone of us, living in this world means waiting for our end. let he who can achieve glory before death. when a warrior is gone that will be his best and only bulwark."

i suspect it will still be in fine shape, though a superduper early start so as to be up and back down to tie in rock before 10 or so in the morning would be wise. sounds like the road is open now, so it's a very reasonable car to car, though camping a night near tie in is a sweet, sweet experience, 'specially if you have a bottle of something all right
  20. no rain today not so busy at all - most notable negative of the season has been the horrendous 'skitters, but today it was nice n' breezy...
  21. I don't even try to waterproof my pack. Instead I line my pack with a garbage bag. The white "trash compactor" bags are the best, because they're the strongest. Everything that needs to stay dry goes in the trash bag. Usually I put my water bag outside the trash bag in case it leaks. I carry a second trash compactor bag for camping. As stuff comes out of the pack it goes into the second trash bag. Helps keep things together and dry. funny, i have some of those bitching white compactor bags that are still in use despite being older than half my high-tech gear
  22. i'm drinking beer n' watching raising arizona w/ my brood on a thursday morning, so i don't know what yer talking 'bout!
  23. "you got some issues" - ya think?
  24. Taft visited Seattle and spent the night at a house overlooking Lake Washington. Prior to arrival they had to put in new wider doors. I'n not making this up, or at least I worked at a house next door a few years back and that was the story I heard. my favorite taft story is from when he arrived in the phillipens to be the first american governor there - he assured the huddled, insolent masses "you are all my little brown children and i am your Great White Father"
