  1. Last night I had dinner with a friend who just got his PhD from UW Physics, and while he had a lot to tell me about the Cashmere project (one of his committee members is very involved in it), he didn't know anything about the tunnel at Index. Maybe it's the Applied Physics Lab folks at UW instead?

Cool! You inspired me to cook Thai tonight! (The dude who took that pic of me peeing is coming over for dinner.)

This is a great thread. Here are my contributions: Couldn't my buddy have waited for me to finish? Self-timed group shot, attempt 1. Self-timed group shot, attempt 2. What happens when I'm drunk and am taking a picture of my drunk friend who is drunkenly cooking in my kitchen. (btw - his crepes stuffed with flambeed pears were absolutely fabulous) The simul summit shot didn't work so well -- my eyes are looking at my camera, and her eyes are looking at her camera. Where'd the top of his head go? A mis-aim on the self-portrait attempt. A finger in the corner might be excusable, but this is pretty bad. This is about as much of a buttshot as you can get. Smile for the camera! I don't care that you can't hear me because the wind is roaring! Look at the camera! Classic wounds shot. You'd see that my eyes were closed if they weren't in a shadow. Miscommunication between my partner and myself, resulting in his taking a picture while I'm still tiptoeing near the edge to get in position. What happens when the self-timed camera falls into the snow.
  5. Yeah, this thread rocks! A few weeks ago we were seeing fish jumping everywhere in Earl Lake. Not that our rosemary hardrolls with garlic brie weren't appetizing enough, but some fresh trout would have totally hit the spot. I have a friend who likes to fish, so I'll have to pick his brain and report back.
  6. This past winter I was indoctrinated with the principle of the "Stupid Check." Works wonders for making sure you don't leave anything behind. I'm disappointed that no one has any clue about the origins of the sign.
  7. Sorry, all I can do is provide the gratuitous mountain porn.
  8. Ooh, are they prescription sunglasses? In a padded case? Might belong to one of my partners when we were up there back in mid-June... I'll email you his contact info.
  9. mtnfreak, the issue with offering it as a PDF is the layout would have to be redone entirely to offer the same quality product, which as you might imagine, would be quite a bit of work. If there are a lot of requests for a PDF version for future editions, we'll certainly consider it. olyclimber, in an ideal world, we would have a print version too -- but that costs money (as well as time). And we are striving to keep the goal of no advertising. blakej, the plan is to have it be an annual thing! In addition to the volunteer effort by the editors, that means we also need people climbing exciting stuff, as well as sending us submissions for historical, biographical, etc., pieces.
  10. Dinner with a friend and dinner party with other friends. Inspired by conversations with friend and friends, thought about what I would like my life to be like in 2-3 years (after I graduate). Bought and ate a bunch of fresh fruit from the Farmers Market. Got a lot of work done to prepare for my meeting tomorrow with my advisor -- he had been abroad for the past four months. Wasted time planning climbing trips and fixing/cleaning climbing gear.
  11. PM Slothrop. He was up there this weekend.
  12. The mathematician says that Loren's suggestion generalizes for n too. The physicist calculates how much more force is necssary to pull the rope evenly while alternating directions n times. The engineer says that you can't fit that many people on a rope anyway, so why waste your time?
  13. hmmmm, maybe they were doing something else... like the fifth force? i really don't remember -- it's been about a year since I bumped into them. and my physics knowledge is primarily mechanics and optics. but they've got to be taking advantage of the immense amount of dense rock surrounding them.
  14. Yep, the setup Loren is describing looks like a Z when stretched out completely.
  15. We saw some UW Physics folks there one time. They mumbled something about having to release the radon and said something about using the facility to detect neutrinos or something. Lancegranite is correct that it was used to test the Chunnel drilling equipment.
  16. Looking for someone to help us out Fri night so that we can bivy at Stuart Lake TH for an early Sat morn start but have our car parked at Snow Lake TH. We can negotiate a price in . I'm sure we could also find some folks spontaneously at the climbers' bivy, but it would be nice, for peace-of-mind's sake, to have things already set up. PM me if you can help out. Thanks, Gary
  17. PM Fromage... he's like size 14 or something
  18. When we did Serpentine last year, I climbed the left side of the pillar. The pillar forms a corner with the main face, and the crack behind the pillar is offwidth, but an inner crack lets you protect with finger-size to hand-size pro. The belay atop the pillar is quite dramatic. One more pitch leads you to the crest and gentler terrain. I thought the rock on Serpentine was, for the most part, better than the rock on WR Stuart.
  19. The 3.5 friend feels more like a 3 camalot to me. From Clyde Soles's excellent page on usable cam ranges: 3 friend: 1.8-2.2 3.5 friend: 2.1-2.7 Yellow Camalot: 1.6-2.1 Blue Camalot: 2.1-2.9
  20. You mean the fact that scamazon.com sells climbing gear?? Bingo They're becoming the Walmart of the Internet. And from anecdotes I've heard, they don't treat their employees too well either.
  21. Not the gray alien, but equally scary. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000E5NC3/102-2350416-0000125?v=glance&n=3402531&s=sporting-goods
  22. We also found a noseless Liberty biner. I haven't heard of Liberty, so I guess they're either defunct or bought out? Too bad there's no way of knowing how long the biners had lying there when we found them. Would have been fun to know how long it had been since people have climbed there.
  23. the oval biner is noseless only writing on it says: Recreational Equipment Inc ten years old? more? On a slightly unrelated note, does anyone remember any specific biners that do or do not work in the homemade hangers on EBD of SEWS (i.e. neutrinos)?
