  1. I've always wondered how many people grabbed and pulled out on the mattress-sized flake that used to grace the post-crux moves of Princely Ambitions.
  2. Especially if you use the Beckey approach.
  3. A good site for gear trivia.
  4. To be honest, I've never explored the bouldering possibilities, but further down the slope, it looks like there are some.
  5. Canis Crag...on the Mountain Loop Highway. From the west... From the east...
  6. Here is a fairly recent topo.
  7. That film with Spencer Tracy and Robert Wagner: The scene is where they are descending and Robert Wagner is wigging out and takes the "other" snow bridge which of course collapses taking him and his booty to an icy, karmic grave. I'd say the best is the movie El Capitan with the clip of (I think it was) Gary Colliver hopping around on the edge of either the Dolt or El Cap Tower bivy ledge trying to get into his potato sack bivy bag only to find that he isn't clipped into anything.

    THE FEAR

Yeah, the ignorance of youth. At 185 the bottom dropped away into a rather impressive wall that disappeared into the blackness of the Strait. The glass-like tinkle of the bubbles, the view, and the extreme narcosis was quite a combo. I was diving with a friend who started diving in the early 1950's in Lake Tahoe. He would do dives to over 200' and then drive over the pass to get back to his home in Reno.

    THE FEAR

A 185 foot shore dive off San Jan Island. We got so narced that my bottom time ended up being thirteen minutes. We followed the bottom back to 100 feet where I realized I was fucked. we ascended directly toward the surface from there. The only deco stop was a 3 minute swim at 10 feet (navigating back toward shore) before we ran out of air. Another 30 yards or so to the beach on the surface and we spent the next two hours laying motionless on the shore hoping the itches and twinges weren't the onset of what should have been a nasty case of the bends. As we lay there, a purse seiner placed and pulled it's net right around the area where we had done the navigation swim

  12. I believe he still is.
  13. What's the story on this route? A beautiful formation, hard aid, classic setting. I got spanked way low on the first pitch several years ago on a "reconnaissance". The most high tech gear I had was RP's, one of which which I resorted to try using as a bashie before turning tail. I've heard rumors of a second ascent. Anybody know anything more?

  16. Peter, Yep, it is Stonehouse. Been to the house, but didn't get on the wall.
  17. Rusty 1/4 inch spinner and rusty, untested 3/4 inch angle with one cracked eye at the top of the bolt ladder at Moonstone Beach, Humboldt County. Grit came out of the pin placement as I weighted it.
  18. SummitPost has some info. There are some really nice class 3-4 ridge traverses if you don't have a partner/want to travel light. Also, there is an obvious, big wall up the Canyon Creek Lakes trail called the Blockhouse Wall (named for the large overhanging boulder near it's base that serves as a shelter) with a big corner in it that has routes, but I don't know particulars.
  19. If the info isn't included, it couldn't hurt to politely ask (rather than make a blanket demand.) I like them with and without the knowledge.
  20. Approach a 5519' peak via FS road #6594... "The upper W and E faces are quite sheer rock for the last 500 feet."
  21. Pressure Drop at Index. I needed skin grafts after that flail fest. Oh, and Bravo Jean Marc on the Cheeks at Index. I finished by aiding on a jammed knot to finish the thing.
  22. ScottPee, let's please contain these types of photos to spray where they belong. Thank you. The management Oops. Sorry. That must have been my other hand.
