MS wrote – Simply put, then, it appears you have a problem with democracy because sometimes people in a democracy spend time talking about things you don't agree with, and you feel that's wrong. They should only be discussing the things you agree with, and everything else is "patent BS" or "crap". Put more simply still: it appears you have a problem with democracy because it actually tries to be democratic, and you don't believe it should. Now MS what you just wrote is (simply put) an example of patent BS or crap! It is nice how you create a false situation where I am advocating that the only issues discussed in a democracy should be in accordance with my personal preferences or for that matter that I have a “problem” with Democracy. I would also note that I explicitly stated that the validity of FS was not a concern to me with regard to my “problems with democracy” assertion – a point you conveniently ignore! Let me give you another example showing the error of your thought process: The internet! The internet is a groovy thing however one of the problems with the internet is filtering thru all the crap to get the information you want. Let’s be clear - describing what I perceive as a problem with the internet does not make me against the internet. I love the internet! The Federalists where not against democracy even thought in the Federalist Papers many potential problems with democracies were discussed. (Aside: Changes in technology may impact how we choose to operate as a democracy and create a whole new series of problems to be dealt with. I’ll help you out here Murray - think of hanging chads!) And just as an aside: exactly what "critical, time sensitive issues" are currently before the California Building Standards Commission? Unless the building they occupy is presently being consumed by flames, I can't offhand imagine anything particularly "critical" or "time sensitive" that would preclude the Building Standards Commission from considering a proposal to amend the building code. I am not familiar with the CBSC but an assemblyperson has not only a responsibility to his/her committee but to the state in general. Here are some burning issues facing CA that I believe should take precedence over this issue: Workmen’s Compensation, Business Taxation, Education, Health Insurance, Levels of Taxation and Deficits. Given the intractable nature of these issues I cans see why it would be appealing to avoid them all together and hope that thru the application of FS harmony can come to the commonwealth!

Murray - Check out my post. I will quote myself: ”Simply put patent BS like this is a waste of time to debate. Esp in CA where there are many critical time sensitive issues that need to be dealt with. As a sidebar I wonder how many additional $ would this add to constructions costs in a state in which affordable housing is almost extinct. I ask that you note two things. 1 I directly answered your question as to why it was a problem with democracy. (Simply put patent BS like this is a waste of time to debate. Esp in CA where there are many critical time sensitive issues that need to be dealt with). Simply put it is difficult for democracies to filter out crap especially when it is possible for one group to force another group to pay the tab, thus much time is wasted on crap such as this. The pros and cons of FS are meaningless to me. 2 The remainder of my discussion regarding housing costs was clearly labeled as an aside and is only tangentially related to my main argument. Last week I tried to look up the resolution and could not find the exact wording but I did find a press release on the assemblyman’s website. It by the way was much more equivocal as to what the real impact would be in terms of potential increase in costs. Mtnguide/MisterE – “Nicely put,Murray. There's absolutely no ….[various stuff deleted]….. of a democracy,if indeed it ever was.” I had the pleasure of working for a Chinese company for most of the 90’s. Once I mentioned that my mother gave me a book on Feng Shui. There was laughter all around. While agreeing that there were some good idea it was basically treated like a joke. Further I have had the pleasure of visiting many factories in china and do not believe that they are designed under the guiding principles of Feng Shui at least in matter that may cost $. Oddy the tenement towns surrounding these same factories seemed to be lacking in Feng Shui as well. Free my Chi! PP

"The structure of a building can affect a person's mood," the measure says, "which can influence a person's behavior, which, in turn, can determine the success of a person's personal and professional relationships." "We need to allow the expression of one's culture. That's why people come to California." .... "Feng shui is a very major cultural factor." ... "If there is harmony in the house, there is order in the nation. ... If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world." MS - Simply put patent BS like this is a waste of time to debate. Esp in CA where there are many critical time sensitive issues that need to be dealt with. As a sidebar I wonder how many aditional $ would this add to constructions costs in a state in which affordable housing is almost extinct. Imagine facing the building permit process for, say, adding another bathroom in the house, if this thing goes through. What is even more odd is how the mighty Times doesn't comment on the introduction of such obviously religious considerations - I say superstitious considerations - into law. What if the directive applied to the application of directives of Leviticus or Hassidic custom? MisterE - Multiculturalism? Surely you jest. If this passes you'd gotta keep that chi up as a matter of official public policy and law! PP

"Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition ... to the early use of military force by the US against Iraq. I share your concerns. On January 11, I voted in favor of a resolution that would have insisted that economic sanctions be given more time to work and against a resolution giving the president the immediate authority to go to war." -letter from Senator John Kerry to Wallace Carter of Newton Centre, Massachusetts, dated January 22 [1991] "Thank you very much for contacting me to express your support for the actions of President Bush in response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. From the outset of the invasion, I have strongly and unequivocally supported President Bush's response to the crisis and the policy goals he has established with our military deployment in the Persian Gulf." -Senator Kerry to Wallace Carter, January 31 [1991] Source: TNR "Criticising the conduct of US and British policy towards Iraq is legitimate, as is disquiet about the effectiveness of the two countries' intelligence operations. But impugning the honourable motives of those who sought to defend their countries, by dealing with a threat they believed they could not ignore, is not." - The Financial Times, yesterday Sorry its subsrciber only link PP

Point one Differntial funding seems lik it will increase the flight by those able from public schools. point two All the BS aside the fact that most parents would given the resources send there kids to private schools is sad proof of how poor;y education has been managed in the US. point three My sense is that many action by seattle public schools are attempts to reduce the flight from public schools and to the extent they are successful they are not helping the underprivliged.
-
Actually Chuck in recent real life planning for my kids timing and transportation was a big factor. Maybe it would not be to you.
-
Isn’t there an effort to fund “underprivileged” kids with a higher cap rate than privileged kids? So a school would receive less money to school my child than it gets for an underprivileged child? How would this affect my behavior? When choosing a school for your own children there are a myriad of factors to consider and in the final analysis all a parent should be expected to do is what he/she feels is best for their kids. The sad truth is that given the resources the vast majority would opt out of public schools. Here is an example of how privilege matters even in public schools. let’s take Viewland Elementary a fairly poor performing Seattle Elementary School. Let’s also add Coe and new campus with much better programs on Queen Anne. Suppose two people live on the same block near Viewland. One has few financial resources and takes the bus to work. This parent may have very little choice but to send their offspring to Viewland. The other parent in this example has more financial resources and works downtown chooses Coe and drops their child off every morning via a slight detour from their usually commute. I am sure that there is a distinct advantage in going to Coe over Viewland.

Heck if it was up to me I be more strict with the moderation; however, I actually do very little in the way of moderation there. The last time I pruned a thread even pope was saying it was spray althoug that did not stop him from ripping on me for pruning it in the spray forum! PP

Minx – I believe that there are (at least) two trends taking place. One is the normal cycle of trendy social things. Think of trendy nightclubs or even some fun first date. At first it/he/she is all consuming and entertaining but after awhile it/he/she is just the same ole same ole. I would point that DFA, SC, j_b and mtngoat all stopped posting before the “so called” change in moderation started. Necro. And DoctorB just do not have what it take to inspire great spray political debates. Somewhat coincidental and not wholly unrelated was the increase in inane spray. That is simple insults void of any underlying humor or wit. Trask made many a witty post but more recently he too was becoming a one trick pony relying on simple vulgarity. I think it was this short of post that is the reason Trask was banned. You know very well that very little has changed in the way of moderation, so to blame the moderation of the board as the primary force in the change at cc.com is simply silly.

A couple of thoughts: 1 Former IRS Commissioner Sheldon Cohen: "Taxation, in reality, is life. If you know the position a person takes on taxes, you can tell their whole philosophy. The tax code, once you get to know it, embodies all the essence of life: greed, politics, power, goodness, charity." Politically taxation has become a powerful signaling mechanism on a politician's potential behavior. 2 The US tax system is increasingly becoming skewed toward the wealthy. Almost 50% of the federal income tax burden falls on those with incomes above $200,000 and 40% of all tax returns now have a zero or negative tax liability. In aggregate, no one with an income below $30,000 per year pays any federal income taxes. Source: Joint Commission See previous posts for a link. 3 Flat taxers might consider that subnational taxes have increased dramatically. (eg an E&Y study concluded that corps. pay 3 times the volume of federal corp income taxes as subnational taxes.)This suggests that if subnational taxes are considered the nation is approachign a defacto flat tax system. FW you be acting like a freakin’ Michael Moore or Paul Krugman! If this place is getting boring I say its because there is too much inbreeding going on. How long can the same group of guys and the occasional gal be a laugh riot? Not very. Especially when spray is comprise mostly of bathroom humor, simple bolting taunts, and “Bush is Hitler” sloganeering. I haven’t been posting lately because I am pretty busy with other things but I’m hoping SexyC, J_B and DFA start posting again for me they made spray a mandatory visit. PP
