  1. what's a "dedicated" probe?
  2. are you strapping this to your back somehow or ... ?
  3. in some cases, buying something you can afford is better than not buying anything at all. i'd feel fine skiing with someone who bought a decent lexan shovel than with someone who didn't have a shovel at all because they were saving up for a titanium one that comes with its own russian bodybuilder to operate it for them.
  4. i just bought one, but i'm curious as to how other people chose the ones they bought. i really wasn't sure what length to get or what features were really necessary or desired. i mean, it's not like there are THAT many choices, but there definitely are some ...
  5. i've got the ortovox that ken4ord is talking about and it has worked fine for me. some say a metal blade is better because it will bite into harder snow easier than a plastic one. and a bigger blade will dig faster. but the plastic blades really work just fine ... and are lighter. and i don't know of anybody who has broken one. you might think about what you want it for and go from there. otherwise, just get one that's within your budget.
  6. i haven't tried cross country skiing yet, but i plan to one of these days. i know there's a track in telluride and i believe there are some trails as well, but i've got my hands - er, thighs - full with telemark turns right now. i was just giving muffy some shit (and she knows it); i wasn't trying to imply anything "bad"' about cross country skiing. i think anything involving snow is worthwhile and to be enjoyed. well, except for perhaps avalanches ... glad you had fun, muffy!
  7. whoa; that's a long way from seattle! quite a long way from telluride, too. have fun down there. pretty place with pretty okay rock.
  8. i have a tip for your first time in powder - a face shot is not the same thing as a face plant.
  9. i thought this website was about climbing. overrated is such a subjective term. just go skiing.
  10. come to telluride and i'll ski with you. we can rip it up on our new tele gear!
  11. cross country? what are you, old?
  12. twins rock. no pointy ends on my skis, thank you! of course, sometimes i forget which way is forwards and which way is backwards, though. muffy, when are you going skiing???
  13. lucky for me i never have to call in sick. not having to go to work until 2pm and living 1.5 minutes from my door to the nearest charlift, i can ski my fill EVERY day.
  14. fejas, i'm not sure if they have any of those on vhs at my local library, but i'll look next time in town. (gotta get a freakin' dvd player already, dammit!!!)
  15. i'm with ya. never got to bring cupcakes for the class on my birthday either ... since i was never in school!
  16. bingo - oops ... that's definitely something i was doing today! thanks for all of the tips so far guys (and gals); i'll definitely give some of them a try in the next couple of days.
  17. same as in alpine skiing ... but easier said (and read) than done!
  18. wow; i think i need another lesson already! what's the short and sweet for making tele turns in pow? every now and then i would think i was starting to get it but then i'd lose it. and boy do my quads hurt!!!
  19. i was originally going to mount the enemies with freerides but they don't make AT boots my size. and i've always wanted to learn to tele anyway ... so that's how that all happened. i've been demo-ing the piste pipes lately (i'm still waiting for my g3 binding cables to show up, and they're just about identical to the enemy except for about 10% of the insides). they seem like great skis so far but i'll have a better opinion after i improve my tele skills enough to start pounding on them. the enemy seems to be the choice of everyday ski for several of the guys in the local shop here. i think they're really underrated and an awesome value if that's the kind of ski you're interested in. k2 makes great skis. volkl, too, but i have slimmer pickings when it come to nice twins since i ski 'em pretty short. never been on a line ...
  20. that's a bold statement. i bet there a few teleskiers out there who can give just about any alpine skier a run for their money, but anyway ... you don't ski inbounds because you're a wuss? do you mean you suck so bad you can't fathom having people laughing at you from the chairlifts? i thought high life was a pretty good flick. better than warren's this year anyway. i like to see a little big mountain jibbing.
  21. what a great story ehmmic! i tried snowboarding a bit but i just didn't find it even remotely as satisfying as skiing. skiing IS magic!
  22. dude, why don't you just put fritschi's on your pocket rockets? i would think breaking trail with skis that are over 90 underfoot would be hell. ugh! (especially in that heavy northwest snow. ) but what do i know? (please don't answer that! )
  23. i know super-fat skis are fun for pow ... but they're not so great for touring, eh? (don't know if by backcountry he meant touring, though.)
  24. uh ... what is a fop? i can't wait to get out on my new skis. public enemies ... with tele bindings. oh yeah; i'll be backcountry jibbing in no time!
