Highest volcano in the world, highest peak in Russia

I don't know about that river vally next to Dhalaguri, but I'll bet it is still pretty high above sea level. Actually the gorge ( I think it is the Indus, maybe??) is really deeply incised, it is only about 4,000 feet ASL and Dhaulagiri is over 24, 000 feet high or whatever. Also Denali is a lot further from the ocean than the St Elias is. Fairweather rises 5000m in only about 50km horizontal distance... ( i think, anybody got the real distance to tidewater?) What the fuck, that is a stupid system klenke (no offense), but if you took a smooth billiard ball of 22 million feet radius and added a 6 inch high pustule of a hill, that would make it "tallest" by your definition even though it would still be an insignificant blip compared to Olympus, Mauna Kea and Everest. Olympus Mons is (relatively) larger peak cause it is on such a small planet. And it is, truly, the biggest mtn in the solar system. Even bigger if you ignore the reference datum and measure simply from nearest low point to summit, cause much of the nearby surface outside the massif is below the datum. The only thing your system measures is distance from the center point, that is almost entirely a meaningless statistic. it doesnt make it harder to climb or anything. The only thing it DOES measure that i can see is rotation speed and hence relativistic acceleration and even there that is assuming all the bodies rotate at the same speed... Chimborazo IS actually the fastest moving point on Earth, though... so you should age slower there. [ 03-04-2002: Message edited by: Dru ] -

As a fellow "stickler" for details, I am chagrined when people, especially climbers intermix highest, tallest and biggest. I believe Mauna Kea (Hawaii)to be the tallest volcano (and mountain) on the planet, coming in somewhere at 31,000 ft. Of course this is measuring the mountain from the ocean floor. The tallest (base elevation to summit) mountain above sea level is Denali. Everest is of course the highest (raw elevation) above sea level. Correct me if I'm wrong! What is the base elevation to summit (I assume you mean base elevation from above sea level or Mauna Kea would win that too, base elevation of 19, 000 feet BELOW sea level) figure for Denali? Cause I have heard that Dhaulagiri, from nearby river valley gorge to summit, is 20,000 feet or something continuous rise. -
Draws on the gear rack, not as much weight swinging around, easy to switch sides for the dreaded lieback up the corner with gear sling stuck between your body and the wall. Gear on the harness. Nuts and Tricams on the left side cause i usually place those at a stance anyways, racked by size small at front big at back. Cams on the right side with TCUs etc. on the front loop and cams bigger than #2 Camalot on the rear loop. Usually place cams 1-handed & rapidly hence rack em on my right side. might move a few over left for the aforementioned lieback situation. This way (with gear split up on the harness loops) i know which piece to reach for with which hand and where it is.On gear sling pieces all get mixed together but i find usually reaching for a draw it doesnt matter which draw i grab.

Tried Welch West Face on Sunday. Left Chilliwack 3:30 AM. Turned around at the spot in Airplane Creek just after sunrise, where you cross the creek to gain the avalanche chute. Lots of evidence of surface slides high up on Welch anf The Still and about 6 inches of unconsolidated over a solid base. south and west facing slopes sliding. NE aspects more stable. Some neat (unclimbed) ice pillars, high up on the Still. Pix eventually.

Tie overhand knots every 16" or so. The result is an 18 0r 19 foot runner with multiple clip in points. Girth hitch a tree through the first loop, clip the rope with locking biners through a loop that allows the rope to clear the edge and then clip as many of the remaining points as you can to trees or pro leading back from the edge. The individual clip in points virtually eliminate the possibility of total system failure if one anchor should pull. I've found this much easier to set up than a batch of various length slings and cordeletts. Buy a Hilti and a bunch of bolts and place a 3-bolt anchor wherever you want to TR. Then just clip the rope though draws. It isnt as safe but it will make you look like a cool sport climber

That info about Hillaree being 'first to ski descend NW peak of Waddington' is such total bullshit... anybody ever hear of Trevor Petersen? John Chilton? Steve Smaridge, Eric Pehota? Hell JOHN BALDWIN TELE SKIIED the thing after skiing UP IT FIRST (no helicopter support here) back in 1996 or 1997... its even written up in the CAJ. Oops but nobody from TNF ever reads that rag. I got a good first descent for Hillaree: north face of Devils Thumb [ 03-04-2002: Message edited by: Dru ] -

The next time I plan to go to Leavenworth I will add to the Calendar a trip of 100 people from the Bumbly Outdoors Clup of Gaperville going there so everyone looks on the calendar, sees it is going to be busy, and stays away.

Young man in the South is getting to be marrying age so his father takes him aside. "Son, I never seen you with no girls. Ain't you gonna get married?" "Oh Pa, I just never brought my girls home." "well you bring them home before you marry them, son. Its time for you to think about marrying now". A few weeks later boy brings girl home to meet the family. Girl is sitting in the house talking to Ma. Pa walks through and is introduced. Motions Sonny to come outside for a talk. "Son, you cant marry that girl, you hear.""Why not, pa?" "That girl is your sister - but your mama don't know that! And don't tell her neither!" So, somewhat sad, Sonny breaks up with his girl. A month or so goes by and Sonny brings another girl home to meet the parents. Again girl is sitting in the parlour talking to Ma. Again Dad surreptitiously checks out girl and motions to Sonny for a heart to heart out on the porch. "Nuh-uh! Nuh-uh! You can't marry that girl either, Son. She's your sister too! But your mama don't know that..." So Sonny is rather dejected by this. And his mother can tell this. So one day while his father is out working in the fields his ma takes Sonny aside. "Son, why arent you seeing either of those fine girls no more? I know you liked em well enough?" "Well, Ma, its cause of Dad. He said I couldn't marry neither one of those girls cause they was both my sisters only you didn't know it..." Ma laughs and laughs. "Well, sonny, you can marry either of those girls that you want to. Cause he aint your father, but he don't know that!"
