  2. finally out
  3. They had good T shirts too.
  4. non sequitirsville baby. Would much rather smoke here than on Rainier:
  5. I do believe that John Baldwin once climbed the north ridge of Guard Mtn. using tele cables as slings and a claw hammer he stole from Sphinx Hut as a 2nd tool.
  6. My one time rock mentor Andy Pacheco once famously wore blue jeans up Baker and got frostnip of a sensitive area.
  7. I like the idea of soloing on a glacier with a 20 foot aluminum ladder around your waist for bridging if you fall into a crevasse

Get gaiters with rings attaching the strap (eg Serratus Alley Gaiters). then when it wears through you just cut the strap off the ring and rivet a new one in place. I went thru 6 straps on 1 pr. of gaiters! [ 03-06-2002: Message edited by: Dru ]
  10. quote: Originally posted by ScottP: Isn't Vortex the name of David's boat? Vortex is a thriller set in the North Cascades, loosely based on the Lodestar Lightning incident, two climbers find a crashed drug plane on Redoubt, smuggle out and sell the goods to the underworld, go on a spree with the proceeds then get hunted down by the original owners of the drugs... lots of mayhem ensues. Good descriptions of the 80's Valley and Squamish HardCore subcultures, and fictional ascents of Redoubt NE face, Salathe Wall, and ski touring are among the climbing related sequences. With the $$ he made from the book he may have bought the boat?
  11. LAFF!As to what happened to Caveman: I never get tired of this one:
  12. "Conquistadores of the Useless" -Lionel Terray. [ 03-06-2002: Message edited by: Dru ]
  13. Bigfoot tracking would be a dream job for climber types. "Lets go climb that peak and see if we see any sasquatch tracks up that glacier". Going by responses to that thread last week on unusual events I think climbers make good sasquatch finders.
  14. quote: Originally posted by v: Dwyaner, thanks for the lovely compliments. I knew there was a reason other than beer that I was heading to Tacoma. I'd thank you for the beer that you promised to buy, but I do believe mountain ranger actually footed the bill for that one. As for fast Eddie's new ID, I believe it's Figger Eight. See you all next week on the East Side. Anyone placing bets on whether Cavey will show or not? Cpt. Caveman is no more. Ray Borbon still exists though!
  15. quote: Originally posted by trask: shit yes, ted would have the myth debunked in a thrice you cant prove something doesnt exist by not shooting it...
  16. quote: Originally posted by vegetablebelay: Check out Sparky with the old-school weed references - reefer and ganja! Quaint! almost as funny as watching strickland try out his 'dank nugget' slang. i think he heard that from some dude who once watched a tv show about some rastas or something
  17. quote: Originally posted by mr. happy: looks like i've got some reading to do... i'm curious as to the nature of mount analogue. what exactly is non-euclidean mountaineering? you gotta read it to find out. very 60's/70s. rene daumal was a leading figure in the post-surrealist movement, le grand jeu (The Big Game).apparently he cranked at fontainbleau and chamonix as well, though nothing special for the era.
  18. quote: Originally posted by Figger Eight: RMI guides get a bad rap, but realize they have a tough job to do. They aren't allowed the comfort of weeding clients out prior to the trip. One of my bud's put it this way, "Every morning I wake up knowing six people will try to kill me today." See right there, that is why I decided 1) never to try and become a guide and 2) the difference between guiding and normal climbing. I like to be able to trust my partners eh... not hate/fear/be wary of them.

  20. quote: Originally posted by Alex: "Over the years, Grover Krantz would sometimes climb into his car at night and go for long, lonely rides into the woods of the Pacific Northwest. Creeping along the back roads at 25 mph with a rifle and spotlight at his side, he desperately hoped his elusive quarry, a Sasquatch, would show itself. " or a deer, sounds like he was jacklighting! Yeah, but deer aren't cryptozoologic! I think Ted Nugent should take up Sasquatch hunting, coons obviously aren't challenging enough for him.

  22. Not quite the stature of Warren harding but a true PNW character. We can only be glad he didnt succeed and that Capt. Caveman is still with us. http://www.sltrib.com/03052002/utah/716617.htm
  23. quote: Originally posted by jordop: I think an important distinction needs to me mad between sporty, svelte crag babes and hairy armpit lesbo gorillas. Coupla years ago at Vantage, there was this woman with so much armpit hair that it stuck out the sides of her arms when she had them at her side Its tainted the whole area for me; it always seems like the place is full of religious/Scouts/leadership seminar wackos. Smith girls oooo yeah! You ought never to go to Europe, hirsutophobe.
