  2. quote: Originally posted by bcboy: what about in the summer? how far can you drive and what is it like (4x4?) when there's no snow? the bridge is gone. even a HumVee wont make it through the creek. you are looking at about 6 hrs (?) of hiking from missing bridge to summit, and about 4 hrs (?) back out, that is, if you hike as fast as me, and assuming you are going to do the west ridge. north edge will take longer.
  3. What if the wolf is a shapechanged 9th level druid?
  4. The road is currently undriveable past the second bridge, as described above where road crosses back to west side of Centre, cause the bridge has been removed. Plan on about 3 hours of skiing from there to valley head at the moment cause snowline is low. The next CASBC Newsletter will have an update on the situation. [ 04-02-2002: Message edited by: Dru ]

Has anybody here ever climbed Squaw rock or the Poplar anyhow? That looks like it could be a fun day out.
  6. Has one poster ever had last post on every single forum on the Climbers Wall at once? I think Borbon came close once or maybe it was Mikeadam.... Iv been closea few imes... ability to spray is, I suppose, required.
  7. quote: Originally posted by klenke: Okay, Dru, you bring your mtn. lion pet and I'll bring my wolf pet and we'll put them in a ring and see what happens. Perhaps we can do some betting on the side like cock fights. It's not about predatory efficiency here, it's about ferocity and drive. A wolf, in a pack or alone, is pretty ferocious when cornered or in danger. And it's not about size here either. If you took that logic, a wolverine would be nothin'. But, in reality, not many things out there will mess with a wolverine. And since wolves and wolverine share the same etymology, can you see my 'logic'? Oh, and I'm not smoking anything in particular, I'm just smoking--as in "I'm smokin' now!" Dude, dont tell me you believe that Disney movie stuff about wolverines being tough, do you? Total BS. wolverines are wimps. just ask Aquaman..... PS The lemmings were pushed. Oh and when cornered or in danger.... what about the mtn lion???? I think the Romans tried that animal fight thing. Just like in Gladiator. Personally, I would like to see a Kangorilla take on a HippoFrog. Borbon sez he saw that once and that it was worth paying the Mexican 50 cents to see.
  8. quote: Originally posted by brian I: yea, i know. when i've got to plan way in advance it's tough. i'll post later. is this climb as great as the guidebooks say? is it worth doing over coleman glacier on baker if i had to do one or the other? they are both slogs. i would do coleman instead as it is higher, if you are into slogs then the higher one will probably mean more to you. also view is potentially better from baker assuming you arent up there in a whiteout.

I know the area you are talking about. Total choss but looks good from a distance. Not even worth going there. I heard there are access issues too. Oh and those FAs you have been eying up were probably done back in the 60's but never reported.
  10. quote: Originally posted by AlpineK: Sorry Dru. I'll hold back for the big 40 . or maybe not I really liked it when I found out that Scott is still getting email notifications everytime someone replies to this thread. HEE HEE! Just for Scot'teryx The StampedeWhen the hot sun sets and the evenin' gets....Calm and quiet on the trail. And the cattle move as their dusty hooves....Pound the ground beneath their tail.Noone seems to care if a cowpoke stares....And he feels he's all aloneSo we drove that herd with just a few choice words....On that night so long ago.Way on up ahead rode Ol' Texas Red....A red bandanna on his face. With his cold gray eyes he searched the northern skies,....A ridin' with an easy grace. On the left was Joe on his old pinto,....And Jim Smith was on his rightAs for the other eight, well, they were not so great,....But we needed `em all that night. When so to soothe our thirst we had done the worst....And rode up to a nester's wellWith our six guns out and without a doubt....The nester would defend himself.Out he quickly came and we all took aim.....A silver blade was in his hand.Red pulled out his knife to take the nester's life....Standin' by him, man to man. Then all at once appeared with no sign of fear.....A girl that boldly changed our plansShe walked right up to Red and shook her golden head....And took the knife right from his hand. Then she quickly cut the tension in our guts....With a smile that burned like a brand. Then that demon girl cut off a golden curl....And left it in Red's outstretched hand. From the north black clouds that looked like funeral shrouds....Rolled in with an icy breath. So we faced a fight on that stormy night....With odds upon the side of death. In the ghostly hush that fell before the rush....Came down upon us like a floodNot a word was spoken as the thunder broke....Our spurs dug in `til they drew blood. So we watched that herd become a mob that blurred....And grew into a raging thang. Then they turned their tail right back down that trail....Stampeding from the Norther's stangSome say that there is beauty in the sound that suits....The purity of mindless panicBut all that we could see were tons of mindless meat were....Headed for that nester's shackDeath was now at stake so we had to break....The rhythm of the raging herd. Then as the lightning flashed we saw a rider pass....A ghostly shape with shining spurs. It was Texas Red who pulled on out ahead,....And grabbed the girl with hair of gold. But then we couldn't see because his horse's knee....Buckled as he hit a hole. There we found the two where the north wind blew....Golden hair across his chest. And her fingers dug into his arms 'til blood....Had made a pool beside her dress. On the trail they lay at the break of day.....As we stood around and staredAt their lips still touchin' and Ol' Red still clutchin'....A curly lock of golden hair.

  20. quote: Originally posted by klenke: Oh, and Dru, a wolf is much more than a dog. Furthermore, a mountain lion would have no chance against a wolf. But then, they probably avoid each other. I want some of that crack you are smoking. Mtn lion is 1.5-2x bigger than wolf and more efficient predator. Single wolf is ineffective predator, thats why they use the pack social structure.
  21. In areas where cliffside vegetation is common (like here) there is, little long term effect. BUT, in areas like the Escarpment or Skaha, where there are known effects on endangered species like bats which inhgabit cliffs exclusively, then perhaps managing climbing to protect endangered species makes sense. Sort of like obsering seasonal closures so raptors can nest, eg. on Freeway and so on. I like at Smith how the golden eagles have chosen the chossy crags of the Monument to nest on so as not to create closures on popular cliffs. I guess they wouldnt get much peace if they decided to build a nest in the huecos on 5 Gallon Buckets.

  24. quote: Originally posted by todd: right, sure, and im sure it can be done in even less! but i bet most folks will want to do it in two days - 1 up, next summit and back down. are you actually suggesting that AJ should try to do it in a day? i dont know AJ, make your own decision, but car-summit-car in a day would be a long one and kinda pointless unless youre going for some speed record. its a beautiful place and youll enjoy being up there - leave your stopwatch at home. rather than say it is a one day, two day, three day trip etc. i just like to give an estimate of hours and let ppl work out their own schedule as to days. i did n arete as a 2 day trip years ago and if i did it again i would go as a lightweight 1 day trip to avoid carrying the camping gear up the long steep trail .
  25. so what about maltodextrin?
