It's that time of year again!!

Yeah, well you could probably tell me off the top of your head the fourth climb down on p 128 in the Leavenworth Rock book two editions ago, along with the rating and how many skulls. Thanks for the info though

Here's my cc.com pet peeve of the day: You're checking out cc.com and you notice a cool random pic in the sidebar so you check it out. Rock looks great, etc. but the only information for the goddamned picture is "DSC01300". C'mon maaaaaan! Go to 20 seconds more work and put something in the comment box (or at least in the name of the picture) of where/what it is!!! Case in point, today: Here is "IMG_3496" Where is this? Looks like the Bugs. Anyone? Keep adding to this thread if you find more pictures about which you are curious.

Then you can take a rest day and you'll be ready for the redpoint on day 3!

You do need a permit to bivy at Colchuck Lake (or Stuart Lake). I've never had a problem getting a day-of permit for Colchuck Lake. The Enchantments region permits are the hard ones to get. However, the logistics of combining those two long climbs in two days and being at the ranger station during working hours to get your permit could be pretty daunting. You can try to get one by mail beforehand. Probably not too late for Colchuck Lake. Just give them a call at the ranger station. You might get lucky and the person answering the phone could be helpful and knowledgable. Not sure how you're working Colchuck Lake into this in two days though.

When it rains, it pours. Judge says administration acted illegally in supressing scientists in logging legislation

Looks like a perfect place for 1 Tim Horton's, 1 Domino's, 1 Subway and a couple of manicure places, maybe a dollar store too, and the anchor, the Chiefview Motel? Good evening sir, welcome to the Chiefview, would you prefer a Chiefview room or one with a Malamute toproping balcony? Excellent

Yes good point. I couldn't afford a $425k loan, but I could afford a $425k house (by selling my current one and putting the equity into the downpayment). Thus it seems that JayB's implicit argument does not hold water in terms of not enough in salaries to increase housing prices. Just because most first-time buyers are not going to be investing in above-median homes, it does not mean that the median will not go up! That can be accomplished by current owners upgrading (and by homeowners from NY, SF, LA moving here).

Random comments after reading all three pages... Where did you get a median of $450k? Seattle times says $364k for single-family homes. Median is maybe a good measure when looking at percentage of population that can get into the market at what level, but mean is better for measuring how much money is in the market. To add another reallife data point: I'm a biostatistician and there no way I'm gonna be affording a loan of $425k - 5%. I don't work in private industry though. And if you want your tax deduction to go toward your house payments each month all you have to do is fill out your W-4 carefully so you won't have too much deducted. $250 refund this year, hit it pretty close. When we applied for a loan (at a big established bank, not even one of those shifty mortgage brokerages) they were offering us a loan for twice what we could afford. They looked only at our salaries. There was no computation of expenses (other than existing debt) like raising kids. It's definitely a racket and you have to look out for yourself. They do give you a little booklet that's titled something like "When your home is on the line." Of course they preface it with, "Don't worry, we HAVE to give you this by law. Just sign here, and here, and here, and here, .... , and here." Seems like regulating the banks won't solve any problems right? Isn't the mortgage brokers that are giving out all these Subprimes? Then they just package them and resell them as bonds and a bunch of bond investors take the hit for defaults, while the mortgate brokers keep the commissions.

Not the last time I tried it. Index Stoke! Tomorrow may be exxxxxcellent. (click on pic for more of Oly's Sloe Chillen study)

I've wondered whether that was doable. Is a low tide necessary to make it to Carkeek? If so, how low?
-
Didn't there used to be a bunch of fixed pins on the start of Sloe Children? That seems like the most runout part of SC to me. That step off the flake and the move or two until the crack opens enough for a piece, wondering if you fall whether you'll bust an ankle on the ledge, or rack your nuts across the belay slings, or both!

When is the viaduct demolition set to happen? No more 99 -> I-90 when that goes down.

If it's dry and not cold, then shorts work well. Shorts (coupled with your aforementioned shell pants) work well if it's wet and not cold also.

Both the climbing gyms in Seattle are near the ship canal in Ballard/Magnolia. They are pretty much a PITA to get to unless you live in one of those areas (not THAT much of a PITA though, like 20-30 minutes instead of 5). Magnolia is a terrific place for running, probably not the hopping in-scene you desire, but a close shot to Belltown. It's probably pretty pricey, but there are probably affordable dirtbag apt buildings near the train tracks. Ballard is probably also cool for running if you're OK with neighborhood street running. Not a lot of big nasty arterials to deal with (but that makes it harder to get around via car). Don't forget proximity to the UW Rock! It's sort of a PITA to park at (or get to during traffic CF) but quite nice if you're close enough to run/bike. Problem is that housing prices go up proportional to your proximity to the UW. Though, of course, student slum apts are plentiful. Forget parking though. Lake City is quiet, but probably boring for hipsters. As mentioned, it's right on the way to Index. If looking for apts there's plentiful slum apts in the general area of NE 125th St and Lake City Way. Reasonably affordable houses too (must be, many cc.commies appear to have settled here). South of the ship canal on the East side of Seattle (Montlake, Madison, Capitol Hill) might be doable. Close to the UW rock. Lots of gay cruising areas. Maybe you could rent the scene of the Capitol Hill Massacre fairly cheap?

fig newtons! I recycle our plastic grocery bags right away by using them as garbage bags for the kitchen garbage. Never have to buy the boxes of plastic garbage bags. Having a small kitchen garbage pail (that you need to take out every night) also seems to help in the summer to control the inevitable fruit fly-festation. Tangent: You guys know what I'm talking about by "fruit fly-festation"? Anybody found anything that works to decrease the fruit fly population in your homes during summer months?

Awesome . I echo above previous comments...and sage advice

The new Senate version has a withdrawal date of March 2008. Does that mean everybody out by then? If so, that seems good. Give the surge time to work or fail. If no good progress made by end of summer, time to start bringing them home. I like making the bring 'em home the default that this bill does. If Bush's surge does miraculously provide results, I'm sure there'd be ways of delaying withdrawal that could be accomplished with the executive branch behind it and only a slim minority in the senate.

It's on the NYtimes.com website genius. Look under opinion, then letters. Good on ya Matt, but I still think they oughta just say bring 'em home now. That's basically what they're saying. Out in 18 months means, OK kids, time to start packing up, NOW! If you consider NOW to be arbitrary, I'll have to settle for arbitrary.

That's quite an order, but I just remember Fitzgerald's summation and press conference delivering the indictment. He had multiple witnesses contradicting his grand jury testimony. There was something about him talking about Plame to multiple people on Monday and then saying that he heard about her first time on Wednesday. I guess you are trying to show me that I have a fallible memory because I cannot remember the details of the case right away and if I were testifying, the stuff I wrote above might get me in hot water. However, if I were testifying, I think I would get some time to go over my notes. I'd get to have a lawyer with me..... AND...in the case of Libby, he had multiple chances to take back his lies. Fitzgerald recalled him a couple of times and badgered him about the exact things that he got caught lieing about. He could have taken it back at that point, as Rove did. That's why I say his lie was pretty obvious. It must have been obvious to 12 (oops strike that) 11 impartial jurors.
-
OK, I see your point here. But he is being a bit disingenuous. Libby's lie, Clinton's lie, Gonzalez's lie by all accounts are all pretty obvious lies (i.e. not mistakes). It is an interesting argument. I'd be interested to see if it flies by the courts, but I doubt it will make it that far.

Did Clinton take the fifth? I didn't think he had grounds to take the fifth. "I respectfully refuse to answer these questions because if I do my wife might kick my ass all over town!"
-
Monica Goodling's lawyer is basically making the case that she can't testify because she might incriminate herself for perjury! "I take the fifth because I might incriminate myself by committing a crime while testifying." That's a good one. I'll have to remember it (if it works) if I ever don't want to testify about something.
