Here is a good one for you. I just took my mom and six year old brother there. We had fun. There is a 2.8 mile hike to the top of Tolmie Peak. Great flowers, a few lakes (I swam in one), and a lookout up top with a spectacular view of the mowich face. It's 40 minutes from tacoma or so. 410 to hwy 65 I think out of farifax. Check out the farifax bridge too. It's worth a walk across. The only downfall is that there may be a few people. I hope it doesn't rain on you. Comet falls is another good one. There are meadows on top...

Thanks for the info. Your post does bring up a question. How does Washington (US) prices compare worldwide. As for Washington (haven't been elsewhere to ski. I don't want to risk my skewed view of cascade superiority), I remember as a kid buying tickets for 15 dollars with deals for mid week, end of the season. These still seem to exist, but not at crystal. I have avoided this resort for many years mainly due to their high prices. Not to mention the typical: bad food and too many people. I guess that's why I stay in the backcountry nowadays. I do still enjoy the resorts, but unless I stick to one place and buy a season’s pass there really isn't a cheap alternative to skiing at multiple resorts (the state pass is something like 1500 dollars). I couldn't imagine trying to take a family up skiing. With a family of let's say four your talking several hundred dollars per day.

Post some poems. I know you've all written some . Maybe about the mountain, maybe not. Maybe you will just write it for kicks and a laugh after reading this. Bring it on . I could use some entertainment. I always liked this one on the front flap of the book Aztec. You tell me then that I must perish like the flowers that I cherish nothing remembered of my name nothing remembered of my fame but the gardens I planted still are young the songs I sang will still be sung... ...And just to be fair and provide some fodder for the fire, here's one of mine I wrote a few days ago (and is at hand). Feel free to scrutinize. The moon dance the river lance my soul dives the turning moon cries The sun sighs tomorrow hides But now there is no foul This second descends the moment defends No time can taint This day I paint ---a picture of my adventure an instant not distant The mountain high the bird cry The thunder cloud the booming sound pounds loud My ears my fears all emotion such commotion Yes the moment a torment a mighty ship a journey leapt It all makes sense I'm not dense Everything rings And truth sings Give and take This life you make Good and bad Take and be glad edit to add a poem that is more outdoor related.

I was just up on sherman and I climbed rock a bit near the top (err..choss). There is a cleaver that you can follow next to the talum. We dropped off of this and climbed the talum which has a lot of crevasses. Getting to there involed many also. As a beginner climb, shuksan via the sulfide is a good one as mentioned. Nice trail, easy route, and some rock with a great summit view. The talum isn't hard, but avoiding glacier may not be possible. I could be wrong. The north ridge of adams isn't bad and avoids glacier. It's mostly a hike with some class 2-3. I like this climb but many people don't like the downclimb. Bring shoes.

I can give you a few hints, but then I'd have to kill yea Josh stood the entire way, but I think the funniest part was when Ben made him stop midway to get a photo. "Um, right there is good, right in the middle. It's a joke!" Ben had a way of doing that. If you haven't read about his ascent of the South Face of Nooksack tower, I reccomend it. As a story goes, it's one of the best I've read about the cascades S. Face NOOKSACK TOWER -

Thanks for the pics iain. So...did you cross the log or get wet? When my brother did that I swore he was gonna eat sh**, especially with skis. After watching him I chose to get wet... -
Well said Stefan!

Several registers in the goat rocks are gone now. A few years ago I was told that they were destroyed. I of course can't verify but if so, I don't understand why. A tiny box under a boulder seems very unobtrusive. I think any effort involved to purify ones experience could be better toiled in other arenas like mining, air pollution, and logging. If the log was some big monument with a pen and pedestal that would be different. From the poll, I can see most would agree.

I don't find a box with paper in it bad. Is it intrusive? Yes? But so is our climbing them. I find them interesting and occasionally add my name when I can find them. I agree that the more difficult summits to reach the top of are more interesting. I especially like some of the older national park cabin registers that i've read...

This is my dream...I'm glad someone is living it. Cool stuff...

When I was younger they (damn snafflist!) ate all my Canadian money in my glove box (half my net worth at the time). I have a feeling that dru sent the special snafflehound patrol to collect all Canadian funds for his nefarious plans of total domination of the USA. I would like to point out that my real money as in US dollars were left untouched. I countered with an incursion accross border to defend our honor.

[TR] Rainier- Emmons (long TR includes rescue) 7/25/2004
AllYouCanEat replied to aukushner's topic in Mount Rainier NP
I've been in similar situations and so I know how scary this can be. I'm glad you are okay! All you can do is focus on alleviating some of that danger by being more safety conscious. Even overly so in the future. It will be awhile before you feel the same in the mountains again. Less confident, less sure, but eventually you'll come to terms with the fact that mountains are dangerous. There is risk and at times, circumstance and choices aside (too many variations. Even those who make the best still get the smackdown), your number is up. It's that way in any aspect of life. -
I just made a rap a few weeks ago on a brand new rope that I'd carried around on several trips but hadn't used, a 8mm, 30 meter rope. At the bottom of a rappel about 15 feet off a boulder field I notice my rope is half cut through. So...now I know who the culprit is! Snaffle. Probably not. Ha. It just goes to show you should check a rope before you use it. Here's a funny story. As a kid we were heading out on a 9 day trip. My old man chews tabaco. About the 2nd day out he found a few empty cans instead of the standard dip awaiting. Suffice to say, snaffle was whistling away all night. Ha.

I've been told that spring skiing in alaska is just a slushfest. Is this true? Is corn snow something that is only unique at this parallel? This is why I love washington and the northwest. Is there better elsewhere or are we really the place to be? I know there is better powder or at least more consistant light dumps elsewhere, but I'd like to think when it comes to corn, we're the corn capital USA.

Very Awesome! What I especially like is the lack of banners and excess. Simple is good. Here's to future versions ... -
Sweet. I skied the easy side this spring and also climbed to the saddle below the ridge to look at the northwest(?) face. This was a nice place.

I'd say hit CJ early, like april. Carry skis to the col, leave skis, climb to the top, descend back to the col and then ski back down from there. 10 minutes tops. Ha. Now all I need is some poor sap to drag me up the rock stuff, maybe a crazy physicist may be willing or JoshK. I wonder even, if a snowmobile will one day ascend CJ. Now that would be nuts. All kidding aside, jberg's objective danger sucks and if you can't ski the col, any other way out can be a chore.

Yea, that gunsight notch traverse isn't fun. Awesome effort anyhow. Being able to walk away is the mark of an old climber who has enjoyed many, many climbs. Awesome mother fu*cking tr...

This makes me wet. Why can't June last longer? Work sux's. Oh, and justin, if you air the rocks I'll get a photo. As for the schrund, you'll need something to slow you down. Everyone knows snowboarders can't turn. I bet layton is a closet snowboarder. Abomibable desk jockey out... -
Thanks for the great TR. It's cool to see some stuff from out of state (that looks fun to ski). While on the subject, are there any good TR/pic websites for climbing and skiing in Alaska and/or Canada?

I jumped on my road bike for the first time in 2 years last night. I noticed that my legs never got tired but my heart and lungs were working full time, especially when this spandex freak tried to pass I'll have to be getting out there some more. For the city bound it's a good way to get a workout. Frankly, I'd rather mountainbike though.
