slothrop Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 I read about Tomaz Humar climbing a hard new route alpine-style on Aconcagua that he called "Mobitel's Swallow - Johan's Route". "WTF is Mobitel's Swallow?", I thought. It turns out that Mobitel is one of his sponsors. He named the route after his sponsor and his dead friend Johan. In the same issue of Rock & Ice, some asshat named Ron Olevsky suggests that route developers should hold the exclusive copyright on route names and topos. All this makes me sick. I thought climbing was one of the last places in life where I could be free from corporate interests and, God forbid, intellectual property debates. Quote
iain Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 I was planning a trip into the MSR picket range this year... Quote
slothrop Posted June 10, 2004 Author Posted June 10, 2004 And you know we've gone too far when we've named the biggest mountain in Washington after some squirrel-piss beer. Quote
Dru Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 Ya and you could visit some 5.10 Anasazi ruins if you went down to the desert.... not the first time eastern euros have named route after a sponsor. what about primus peak huh??? Quote
specialed Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 some asshat named Ron Olevsky suggests that route developers should hold the exclusive copyright on route names and topos. I actually have a copywrite on the term "asshat." Expect a lawsuit forthwith, for $10,000 in damages. But I'll settle right here for $19.95, or a case of Mickey's Bigmouth. Quote
Dru Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 isn't mount bachelor named after a ski resort? and i heard whistler used to be called London Mountain but the resort developers wanted a more marketable name too.... Quote
slothrop Posted June 10, 2004 Author Posted June 10, 2004 I am filing a class-action lawsuit on behalf of speds and retards everywhere for your misuse of the term "specialed", which has infringed upon my clients' civil rights. Ron Olevsky would probably sue you for just climbing "his" routes. Quote
iain Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 isn't mount bachelor named after a ski resort? "mount bachelor" was named after a gay travel tour service. ba-dum ching. was that inappropriate? Quote
dbb Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 Ron Olevsky is a guy who's put up many Zion wall routes. I guess he's trying to cash in on all those religous types using HIS route name: "Prodigal Son" Quote
CPOly Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 ba-dum ching Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week! Quote
gapertimmy Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 its bachelor butte technically, but ownership got state to change it to "mount" cuz it sounds more alpine. BUT, we do have an italian bistro called 'scapolos' on the mountain (italian for bachelor) and some italian dude from the mother land threatened with a lawsuit saying he had the word 'scapolos' patented:) Quote
iain Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 yes, and we all know how tight the mid-mountain bistro market is! what an idiot. Quote
Dru Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 WTF I think they named a whole fucking RANGE OF MOUNTAINS after Chouinard's clothing company Quote
Dru Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 they changed the name of mount todd ski hill, near kamloops, to "sun peaks" cause none of the german tourists wanted to ski a mountain whose name means DEATH! Quote
EWolfe Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 Course, the way around that is to name your route something so dispicable that no-one would WANT to lay claim to it. Quote
Dru Posted June 10, 2004 Posted June 10, 2004 Shit, they named Big Dick Peak after me. Look out, Layton needs more subjects Quote
gslater Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 its bachelor butte technically, but ownership got state to change it to "mount" cuz it sounds more alpine. This one has always pissed me off. It's geologically a butte, it had always been referred to as a butte, and then the USGS caved on the renaming. Quote
gapertimmy Posted June 11, 2004 Posted June 11, 2004 what makes a peak vs. a butte anyhow? on some old maps, brokentop shows up as st. mary's butte Quote
