Was even thinking of dredging it up myself. Still a fan of a few things: SpaceX and the scientists and engineers there. Also how Tesla helped make EVs mainstream. The solar power stuff is awesome too, but over priced and not especially innovative. Starlink has been awesome for some select use cases, but I really don’t like the pollution of the night sky. The man himself though, he is unfortunately a huge disappointment as a human being, even if you set aside his political affiliations. Turned out to be a real turd. I accept the shame of being naive about who he really is. Quote
Fairweather Posted November 2 Author Posted November 2 His free speech beliefs and anti-censorship efforts. The horror! You were right in 2015--don't go soft now, amigo! Quote
JasonG Posted November 2 Posted November 2 I'm not sure if any of us would handle that sort of wealth, and the platform it provides, very well. It is sort of mind boggling what is possible when you have unlimited money and visibility.....and nobody to say, "uhhhh, hold on a second Elon." Quote

More accurately: "Russian government AI bots and billionaires who own media corporations made up a bunch of lies and used their massive wealth to make sure that was all most Americans heard. So we should probably limit foreign influence and corporate powers so that actual facts are findable and the voices of American citizens are at the heart of political discussions determining the future of this country." I found this video to be helpful. Edited November 14 by bedellympian Quote
Fairweather Posted November 16 Author Posted November 16 (edited) Nonsense. When you hear Democrats say "misinformation' or "disinformation" what they really mean is "anything we disagree with or doesn't fit our worldview." The solution to bad information is good information. Unfortunately, New Left Democrats and "progressives" see regulation and censorship as their preferred solution. It's a big reveal. And when they claim "Russian bots," again, they're just seeing a bogey man or walking away for an argument they just lost. As for the billionaires, well, do you mean George Soros? He's buying up hundreds of radio stations across America. Not to mention local prosecutors. Bill Gates? Or the other billionaires who financed Kamala's campaign? Mark Cuban? Oprah? They raised almost double what Republicans did. And still lost. Because, it turns out, voters understood they were the real threat. Edited November 16 by Fairweather Quote

Link: FBI Press Release Quote: "This Russian activity is part of Moscow’s broader effort to raise unfounded questions about the integrity of the U.S. election and stoke divisions among Americans, as detailed in prior ODNI election updates." But the FBI is just liberal propaganda, because that's what you say for "anything we disagree with or doesn't fit our worldview." It's a two way street I'm afraid. 20 hours ago, Fairweather said: Or the other billionaires who financed Kamala's campaign? And there is a difference between donating to a PAC for documented campaign expenses as any American can do (not that I think it's fair how much any billionaire can spend or agree with the amount of $$$ in our elections) vs. Musk firing thousands of moderators at X and throttling websites he disagrees with to drown out alternate view points. If "The solution to bad information is good information." then I guess he thought he'd just get rid of the good information. So much for "setting the truth free" as he so eloquently fibbed. Fairweather Posted November 17 Author Posted November 17 (edited) Musk fired thousands of liberal censors at Twitter. And rightfully so. The only "alternative viewpoints" that were being censored at Twitter were conservatives. They even banned a presidential candidate in 2020. Famous Musk quote: "turns out you don't need a lot of employees when you're not busy censoring everyone." What X has become is a virtual free-for-all, true. But that's the price. I see plenty of crazy stuff both left and right. It's just amusing that mid-wit Democrats somehow think they're the smartest kids in any room they enter. This whole free speech and democracy thing isn't working for them. Arrogance. The FBI? Comey? McCabe? Strock/Paige? Sheesh, they've been political since J Edgar Hoover. We did just fine without them for the first 150 years of the Republic. We'll do just fine when they're gone. Edited November 17 by Fairweather Quote

I would prefer to talk about positive things that we have in common. Like being in the mountains, adventure cycling, or floating the Yukon, or that kind of thing. Quote

Fairweather Posted Tuesday at 05:22 AM Author Posted Tuesday at 05:22 AM (edited) I don't want to talk If it makes you feel sad I've been gone the better part of a decade--and return only to find Spray has gone silent; gentrified. Forty eight pages--flapping in the wind. Is this a NW devolution? Where's the mojo? The spirit that once drove Spray also drove us into the hills--and back here to tell our tales. And brawl. The mountains look different in the PRWA these days, for sure. Bureaucrat weekends, full of rules. Little white squares. Feministas and cucks. Not the way it used to be. Libtards on Parade. KaskadskyjKozak Posted Tuesday at 05:55 PM Posted Tuesday at 05:55 PM (edited) I agree things have changed. So have I. And I've aged. I find solace and joy finding less travelled paths and enjoying that solitude while it still lasts. I have been remiss in posting TRs here. I should though. I had a horrible turnaround on Chaval last summer, and that tale might amuse some, in a Schadenfreude kind of way. I did have the mountain to myself. (well, me and my son did). I need to go back before the masses/IG crowd discover it Edited Tuesday at 05:56 PM by KaskadskyjKozak Quote
Bronco Posted Tuesday at 06:01 PM Posted Tuesday at 06:01 PM (edited) I'm certainly a little more protective about where I expend my declining energy these days. Fighting on the internet is not as fun as it was in the early 2000s. Those were the glory days of spray. Now I spend my time trying to how to recover from training injuries. Spray now Spray in the 2000's Edited Tuesday at 06:02 PM by Bronco Quote

Rad Posted Wednesday at 01:18 AM Posted Wednesday at 01:18 AM CC.COM was my first social network experience, complete with avatars where some people used real names, some used fake names, and Dru used dozens of names. Like the rest of internet, there was some incredibly useful information and some time-sucking garbage. I mostly stayed away from Spray. We raged on the internet here before other social networks were even invented. Back then, we knew that behind every user name - whether real name or cheesy avatars - was a real person, a climber, with whom we likely shared a lot. I was always surprised at Pub Clubs to see that as much as cc.com seemed like a diverse community, it was almost entirely white, moderately athletic, friendly, dudes who would gladly give you a belay or swap a story over a beer. Then Social media turned into something else. We've all seen how truly toxic and time-wasting much of it is, how algorithms feed us whatever will keep us engaged, and we've come to understand that tech companies could care less about creating community and are just extracting our data like giant mosquitoes so they can instantly sell it to hordes of other waiting mosquitoes whose goal is simply to separate us from our money. Not to mention bots who aren't even human. There's no satisfaction in arguing online in that enviroment unless you are pathologically deranged or pathetically lonely or both. Sigh. Spray was something here because it was actual people with stuff in common in a virtual mosh pit. Them's were the good old days. Quote
JasonG Posted Wednesday at 02:19 AM Posted Wednesday at 02:19 AM Yeah @Rad, but we're still here and still real. The mods and @olyclimber keep the bots at bay so ......it's just us. But we're old and don't care about fighting anymore. Sorry @Fairweather! 1 Quote
olyclimber Posted Wednesday at 02:26 AM Posted Wednesday at 02:26 AM Aside from just the history and information on this site. I’ve worked to keep this site on because it is not driven by algorithms you mention. This is a community for people to connect over a common interest, and refuge from the mind-control apparatus that social media has become. No AI, or at least we try to clean it…you never know these days. This place is an alternative to all that in my eyes. Hopefully we can keep it that way. We need some whippersnappers who understand all this and can take the reins someday. as for spray I’ve had a lot of fun here. There have been some really funny people come through here. It hadn’t been all good, but what you’d expect for a free for all. I miss some (most)of the people, others not so much. In the battle for attention this site will lose against the current psych-ops enterprises. But who knows what the future holds or which way the wind will blow next. get off my lawn. 1 Quote
