If only we had done that for the past 4 years...things would be all fixed by now.  The democratic platform is based on a laundry list of NEW programs and NEW spending. It comes out in every major speech and rally. Listen to Clinton's State of the Union addresses every year. Listen to Al Gore debating W (gotta love W's retort - if you are having a contest to outspend me, you win). Talk about defying common sense - especially in our current mess.  Jon - we've had lower taxes before and a larger military, and Barry still manages to have a larger deficit than his predecessors. The fact is that if you raise taxes, no matter how much, the Democrats will always find a way to spend them all and then some. I'm all for cutting the budget across the board, including military. I'd support some higher taxes, but only with concomitant spending reductions. And I will not favor new taxes to fund NEW huge, costly gov't programs. We should think about cutting out bases, reducing our strength, etc. It's not just Iraq and Afghanistan.  I am still wondering what Obama and Putin were brewing up - you know the "flexibility" after the election. I certainly don't favor pissing off Russia or attacking Iran. The question is who would Romney bring in to his cabinet. We knew who W would bring in. Upon looking over the dialog, I must concur with your point about my comment; our government has no apropriate role of action within Christianity, nor any religion, of course. I do disagree, however, with assertions that lessons attributed to the biblical character named Christ directs followers to not provide charity through their government today. My assertion here is that had there been a democracy in the time and place of Christ, rather than "Ceasar," then democracy would naturally have been a rational means to dispense charity, as well as being a chosen vehicle of activism for the charitable one himself. I further assert that those who say otherwise today are equivocating our democracy with Ceasar's tyranny. You might find that equivocation plausible, but I find it ludicrous.
