JayB Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 We have a fan in England: Short summary: According to our admirer abroad, the frac-oil/gas boom + wages racing to the top in China = win for Team America. " World power swings back to America The American phoenix is slowly rising again. Within five years or so, the US will be well on its way to self-sufficiency in fuel and energy. Manufacturing will have closed the labour gap with China in a clutch of key industries. The current account might even be in surplus." World Power Swings Back To America Not sure about the punchline but fracking is a game-changer on the energy front, and should have a significant effect on employment, capital investment, energy costs, and trade balances. The race to the top in China is also real, as rising wages relative to productivity and the declining differential via US manufacturing should lead to sourcing an increasing number of manufacturing operations in the US vis-a-vis China. Europlosion could also more than negate any benefit from all of the above in the near-term. Ditto for increasing compliance costs vs production. Having said that - reading the analysis had a brief but pleasant effect on my outlook. Probably will have had the opposite effect if you have placed significant bets on alternatives energy sources that require a continuous infusion of subsidies as they're going to get crushed by the remorseless math of fiscal constraints and the amplification of the practical and cost advantages of gas. KaskadskyjKozak Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 If this were to happen can you imagine the new depths of misery to which j_bot and prole would sink? Quote
prole Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 "Remorseless Math", Kojak's new favorite neoliberal death metal band. DDIIIIIEEEEEEE!!!! Quote
ivan Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 dunno 'bout the longterm wisdom of frack'n, but i heard the other day the boomtowns of frackerdom, north dakota are so flush and so short on labor they're payign 300$ signing bonuses at mcdonalds n' 15$/hr Quote
glassgowkiss Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Unfortunately hydro-fracking is a dirty precess and releases some heavy duty shit into ground waters (like mercury and other heavy metals). I don't think people are realizing they are creating large scale "Love Canal". Quote
KaskadskyjKozak Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I mean, just think, once the cycle of capitalism has its next upswing, prole's mantra of "capitalism has failed" will have to be moth-balled by the ghoulish Marxist opportunist for at least a few years... Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Widespread untapped geothermal in the US: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/10/111025135936.htm Sonoma, Mendecino, and Lake counties started running out of geothermal due to a lowering water table. They solved the problem by pumping treated waste water down the wells. Sure, their outlets smell like poo now, but still.... Fkn humans, always figgerin shit out and bullshit. Quote

prole Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Thank God there might be yet another way to mortgage our health and environment in order to keep this jalopy going for another ten years! McRibs for everyone!! Quote
prole Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Were you thinking coal was going somewhere? Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 It won't if there are no alternatives. Quote
prole Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Given what we're already seeing from the fracking process, it isn't an alternative. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Look at the bright side: You gotta learn how to frack for deep geothermal. We'll be really, really good at it by then. Quote
prole Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 As long as you're not on the downstream end! After all, you're worth it. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Nearly all of our peak power comes from natural gas here in the NW (if you plug in your Prius at night...natural gas is what's juicing it), so...guilty as charged. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 BTW, I noticed that the Freddy's in Ballard has electric charging stations in the parking lot, now. Quote
prole Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Fuckin' baby boomers. Who's more ashamed, their parents or their children? Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 I sleep like a baby at night. As for the 'rents, I'm pretty sure they're good with what they did for the world. You know, beating back the Nazis and all that drivel. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Granted, they didn't SPREAD THE WORD on forums like this.... Quote
