Choada_Boy Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 What, exactly, is "funny" about any of this?? Quote
kevbone Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 I dont that is funny.....but this is. Â Â [video:youtube] Quote
wfinley Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Around 150 people / year die from peanut allergies and about 500 have died from lightening in the last 10 years so the Prison Planet story is pretty spot on. Quote
Peter_Puget Posted July 22, 2011 Author Posted July 22, 2011 Link  The BBC has now removed a post stating that the attacks suggested domestic terrorism rather than an Al Queada style attack.       Quote
Off_White Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Â Funny how? Conservative anti-muslim Christian kills 92 and counting? Somehow I'm neither amused nor feeling smug that my belief that terrorists are not always brown skinned is vindicated. Simply wretched all the way around. Quote

tvashtarkatena Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Wow, PP, you're just a complete shit streak of a human being. Â Â Quote
Peter_Puget Posted July 25, 2011 Author Posted July 25, 2011 Funny not in the Ha Ha sense. What I was pointing out was that the DHS was getting lots of flack for characterizing "White Americans as Most Likely Terrorists." And then this happens.  link  Definition 2 of "funny" (Free Online Dictionary):  2. Strangely or suspiciously odd; curious.         Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Too late. You shoulda chosen your words more carefully to begin with. Â You didn't because you suck. Â Â Â Â Quote
Hugh Conway Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Funny not in the Ha Ha sense. Â Yeah, the whole conservi-troll thing was really played out 5 years ago. Now it's pathetic. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Then there's always the choice of just shutting the fuck up after such a tragedy. Â You might try it on occasion, PP. You're a bit too emotionally limited for any other option, really. Â Â Quote
prole Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 As much as I'd love to join the pile-up on Pee-pee, at least he's willing to acknowledge the danger the American Right poses to this country. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 That actually requires acknowledgement by anyone at this point? Â Â Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Cultists, whether they choose to follow Jesus, Rand, or Hitler, are the real threat to the well being of everyone in this country. Â Perhaps someday our fine citizens will choose to enter the Age of Reason, where magic is relegated to its rightful place in fiction. Â I'm not holding my breath. Quote
prole Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 And when the "cultists" represent a significant portion of the mainstream? Apart from this guy's actions, it seems there's little he said or wrote that would be unfamiliar or 'extreme' in daily American discourse. The besieged, 'clash of civilizations' mentality, anti-Muslim, anti-multiculturalist, anti-left stance of this wacko is actually bread and butter, even around here. Quote

Yes, cultists do represent a significant percentage of the population here, they are well represented in our 'leadership', and they're ideas are considered mainstream.  Other than restating the obvious, I'm not sure of the point you're trying to make.        Quote
prole Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Well, we already got Peter's take: "it's funny". So mostly I'm just waiting for Fairweather to exhume the Unabomber case. Or for Jay_B's reaction through the lens of 'renegade history'. Quote
Jim Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Glen Beck is more concerned that there was such thing as a political camp for youth than what happened there: Â BECK: And then there was a shooting at a political camp, which sounds a little like, you know, the Hitler youth or whatever. I mean, who does a camp for kids that's all about politics? Disturbing. Quote

JayB Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 My response is that: Â 1)It's a disgusting slaughter. Â 2)The guy who did the slaughtering was clearly inspired by arguments that have been advanced by people on the political right for the past ~20 years or so. Â 3)We'll likely have different thoughts on the significance of point 2. Â (The most robust) Liberal democracies have been dealing with violent fanatics inspired by particular religions, political ideologies, etc for hundreds of years without instituting any formal constraints on political or religious expression beyond laws against libel, incitement, etc. Â As tragic as these events are, liberal societies can survive them much more readily, and with far less damage than the attempts to constrain speech, political expression, and the interchange of ideas that inevitably follow in their wake. Hugh Conway Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 Hey the Rosenbergs were guilty and McCarthy justified by Venona in JayB land which with a whole bunch of other asterisks might produce a hundred years of liberal democracy. Quote
prole Posted July 25, 2011 Posted July 25, 2011 (edited) 1)It's a disgusting slaughter. Â 2)The guy who did the slaughtering was clearly inspired by arguments that have been advanced by people on the political right for the past ~20 years or so. Â 3)We'll likely have different thoughts on the significance of point 2. Â First, for me, the significance of point 2 is that this man's actions are the logical end result of the anti-Muslim, anti-immigrant, anti-tolerant propositions being put forward by mainstream conservative politicians, commentators, and academics. Relatedly, how exactly does one espouse these views (which, correct me if I'm wrong, you have) and prescribe policies based on them without constraining speech, political expression, and the interchange of ideas? In the wake of this event and others like it, it appears that people like yourself have as much work to do among your own (increasingly mainstream) fringe as you claim moderate Islamic clerics do. Calling something an abhorrent tragedy, invoking an unrelated fear (state power), then moving on ain't really gonna cut it. Edited July 25, 2011 by prole Quote
