justinp Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Any of you out there? I am kicking around the idea of applying for a district engineering detail in Burns Oregon. This makes sense from a career standpoint…. However, quality of life is as or more important to me than my career. Seems like Burns is pretty much in B.F.E. So I’m wondering what the heck is out there worth climbing? Far as I can tell besides the Steins, which appears to have little climbing opportunities, the Bend area is the closest thing with any climbing (2.5 hours away). Anyone want to pipe in with some info? Quote
shapp Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 (edited) Leslie Gulch is not all that far in a relative sense, and there are a ton of other big spires along the Owyhee. I will be down on the Owyhee all next week with the wife. Be assured, while burns lacks the "culture" of the west side, outdoor pursuits are boundless. Edited June 8, 2010 by shapp Quote
luvshaker Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 I would be all over it, especially if it's short term gig. So much undiscovered country (at least from a climbers perspective, cheep rent, and a place to quiet the mind for sure. Just drive strait to Leslie Gulch.....Smith Rock of SE Oregon. Quote
shapp Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 be careful, the east side is dangerous, you might just find your self staying for many years and getting hitched, at least that is what happend to me. Quote
shapp Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 ps. those walls in the bottom pics are many hundreds of feet tall Quote
iain Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Not climbing, but be sure to take a trip up steens mountain if you end up out there. It is worth the trip. There are some awesome campsites in the fall as the aspens turn colors. Quote
rbw1966 Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Steens is on the butterfly migratory path as well. Spectacular. Quote
