chesterboo Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Last Friday night at 11:45 pm my family and I were sleeping when we were awoken by our dog whining to go out. This happens occasionaly when he sees animal etc.... out the door or he hears somehting. My wife got up and let him out and he ran out barking loudly at whatever. 5 minutes or less later our power goes out. My wife and I get up to check out whats going on and we realize that our neigbors on either side and across the street both have their power on. This is weird?? I call my neighbor who is a cop and lives across the street and ask him what he thinks. He agrees that it is odd and since he has his two children at home sleeping he does not want to come outside to check this out so long story short I called 911 who sends out officers to investigate. While they are on their way I went into the garage and check the fuse box that has the main power circuit breaker tripped to the off position. All checked out ok but we are left with a mystery. How did the circuit breaker get tripped. I have never had that happen before with the main. At the time it tripped we had no electricity running except hot tub in back yard that has its own dedicated gfi and circuit. Ideas anybody? Quote
Off_White Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 I'm only a general contractor, not an electrician, but I've never seen a main breaker trip, that'd be a hell of a load. Offhand, I'd guess the Manson Family? Quote
catbirdseat Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 (edited) Was the main breaker tripped or was it flipped off? Or did you notice? If the breaker has tripped, it will be not all the way to the off position, but somewhere in between. Sounds like someone flipped the switch in hopes of perhaps disabling a burglar alarm. billcoe Posted August 14, 2007 Posted August 14, 2007 Inadaquate: hire a real electrician to look at it. You have AC? Heat pump? Faulty breakers have been known to occur. Mansons locked up, but who knows where his brother is......hire it out. Quote
chesterboo Posted August 14, 2007 Author Posted August 14, 2007 The main breaker was switched to off. It was in a closed and locked garage. What was spooky however is that that day my wife had a 'garage sale' and sometimes with those things it brings about some unsavory deal hunters. Nobody went into the garage during the sale as it was actually held out in the couldesac. When I looked in the garage that night, my neighbor and I both went into it with weapons drawn looking in all the vehicles, hiding places etc... Quote
Fairweather Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 With your pistol gripped firmly in your right hand, slowly open the inner garage entry and, allowing only your forearm to pass beyond the door frame, begin blindly discharging the weapon from left to right at chest height - and then back again right-to-left pointing the muzzle down slightly to take out the cowering offender who just may have survived the initial fullisade. Reload and repeat. If no noise comes from the garage after two or three minutes, call your wife up from the bedroom and silently give a nodding gesture toward the door while mouthing "Don't worry honey. I've got your back." If it all proves out to be a false alarm, have her head back to your bedroom for some sex. Quote

Slesse Climber Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Move to Canada. You don't even have to lock your doors here. Quote
climbnsparky Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 if the main was tripped there is no way you could have power at your hot tub. if the breaker was in the off position then someone turned it off. when they trip they arent in the off position. sounds like something a little henky is going on there. i'd have my sig out too! tvashtarkatena Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 Move to Canada. You don't even have to lock your doors here. True, but you do have to pay 11.95 CN for a sixer of Kokanee, but never on Sundays nor after 6:00 pm. Oh Canada, when will thou breakest thine chains of tyranny! Quote
Slesse Climber Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 (edited) Move to Canada. You don't even have to lock your doors here. True, but you do have to pay 11.95 CN for a sixer of Kokanee, but never on Sundays nor after 6:00 pm. Oh Canada, when will thou breakest thine chains of tyranny! First of all, Kokanee is swill. Second, you can still get it after the government liquor store is closed from a privately owned cold beer store - you just pay more. Anyway, think of it as an installment plan on that liver transplant you are heading towards - when the time comes, you won't have to pay a dime! Socialism, yes; culture of fear, no. tvashtarkatena Posted August 15, 2007 Posted August 15, 2007 I wouldn't know if Kokanee is swill or not; as far as I can tell, all Canadian nationally distributed brands seem to be Hamms in different colored cans. Culture of churchladies: No. Culture of cheap, readily available beer, smokes, and amo: Yes. Quote
