sir_vent Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I went up to the SGC with Pochi and met up with Brian M and Matt. We waited out in the tent all sunday and monday it was bluebird, but there was ~4 ft of sugar snow and we stopped at the base of the couloir after a couple hours of wallowing. We went pretty heavy, intending to wait out the storm sunday. The NE face of stuart looks awesome right now! Quote
catbirdseat Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Yeah, I was one of the climbers that someone's friend talked to on Sunday evening (day or two after this Trip). We headed up there on Sunday morning, but as mentioned, got turned around by loud shifting/breaking noise from deep underneath my feet... not once but twice. There was certainly more than a couple of inches in the couloir- I was definitely mid thigh deep when I tried to cross the couloir the first time (halted by aforementioned unsettling snow noise). It warmed up substantially during the day, and we left in a good rain. I did my best to take some pictures of the new conditions from below if anyone's interested. Holy crap, those had to be scary noises! Bill, of course we'd be interested in some pictures. Thanks for chiming in. What a difference a day makes! Quote
catbirdseat Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 did you have/want snowshoes? No. Snowshoes are definitely not needed. I don't think that the new snow affects this either because it has likely melted or hardend below the lake. Snow level on Friday morning was circa 3,000 ft, but as Bill says was above 4,000 ft on Sunday. Quote
scottgg Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Anybody have recent pics of Dragontail's north face? Quote
pup_on_the_mountain Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 No. Snowshoes are definitely not needed. I guess Dave was asking whether snowshoes were/are needed for Stuart.. it could be a cakewalk on terra firma till you turn off towards Colchuck, and then a big post-hole fest after that till you get to Stuart. Last year, we had to bail on the ice cliff route in mid-April partly because we were sinking too much without snowshoes. Another team with snowshoes did the route a day before us, and there was enough traffic to Colchuck without floatation as well. BTW, nice jorb on TCs! Quote
catbirdseat Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I stand corrected. Indeed, snowshoes might be needed for Stuart. Quote
Weekend_Climberz Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 What's that your buddy's holding?? Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted April 24, 2007 Author Posted April 24, 2007 (edited) Anybody have recent pics of Dragontail's north face? Best I can do for now: Taken 4/2 Closeup, taken a week later Edited April 24, 2007 by tvashtarkatena Quote
goatboy Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Hey tvashtarkatena, Thanks for the photos! That second one is looking up the Hidden Couloir? Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted April 24, 2007 Author Posted April 24, 2007 (edited) Sort of...the Hidden Couloir is, well, hidden in the second photo, but that photo clearly shows the 2nd Couloir. The obvious notch in the second photo corresponds to the notch at the top of the red line in the first photo. The red line is the Dragontail Madness route, kinda sort of. scottgg Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Thanks for the pics! Did anyone glance up D-Tail's NE Couloir, or have any beta regarding it, especially the rock between the end of the snow and the summit? Quote
kurthicks Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 it was full of snow a couple weeks ago, but it had gotten socked in when we walked down past it. no idea about the rock pitches, sorry scott. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted April 24, 2007 Author Posted April 24, 2007 It was socked in our our descent, too. My guess would be that the rock is plastered with manky thin ice and sugar snow, based on other places high on the mountain, but that's just a guess. Quote
Wild_Bill Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Yeah, I got a look up the NE Couloir after we came off TC on Sunday (4/22/07)- SNOW. Lots and lots of snow. Ski-able amounts perhaps. Quote
Wild_Bill Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 These were all taken last Sunday. Again, there's a bit of snow. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted April 25, 2007 Author Posted April 25, 2007 More Dragontail prOn: from the big wind storm 2 weeks ago: 2 climbers bail out of the Hidden Couloir What they were bailing from 3 shots of Colchuk in the wind storm Quote
goatboy Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 This has got to be the best thread ever for dragontail images and changing conditions....thanks to all for contributing! Quote
