EWolfe Posted December 9, 2006 Author Posted December 9, 2006 You guys are just baggin' on a Offsome compliment... Quote
Ducknut Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Make sure you post a TR with lots of pictures of the first ascent and descent. Sweet job, gotta love gluing up wood that you've cut, milled, planed and seeing the final product. Quote
tradclimbguy Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 I was too worried about condensation and mold in the insulation. Next time it might be good to throw an extra layer of plastic over the entire set of insulation just to make sure it never gets wet. He's going to Arizona. It's dry there. I wasn't worried about moisture getting in from the outside. You ever lived in your vehicle for any period of time? Think about all the condensation you get from sleeping in it or especially if you ski out of it and bring wet gear inside. Thats the moisture you'd put in another barrier for, not the rain. The rig looks bad ass and will probably hold up just great, especially with all that quality work gone into it. Quote
rbw1966 Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 I imagine the vent he put in the ceiling will help alleviate any moisture build-up. Quote
G-spotter Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 and more importantly let some of the smoke out Quote
EWolfe Posted December 11, 2006 Author Posted December 11, 2006 Thanks for the heads up on moisture. I am going to caulk all of the seams with big stretch to help alleviate that. Quote
catbirdseat Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Thanks for the heads up on moisture. I am going to caulk all of the seams with big stretch to help alleviate that. Are you going to have a heater other than the one that comes with the van? Best way to dry things out is to provide a heat source. Quote
EWolfe Posted December 11, 2006 Author Posted December 11, 2006 Yes, but is a catalytic propane one: no off-gasses, but moisture may be an issue. I have 110, so maybe I will get a small electric heater as a back-up. I gotta crunch the #'s on one to see what the amp draw is. Quote
Dechristo Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Hey, man, make it, like, an Earth Ship on wheels, dood. You know, like, the whole passive solar thing... you'll have beaucoup heat. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 I you've got 110, Home Despot sells little 1500 W space heaters beddy chip that might do the trick. 4" x 5" x 6". Quote

Off_White Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 I've always understood that those catalytics still gave off carbon monoxide, am I wrong? Be double careful and check it out E, asphyxiation would be an avoidable premature departure. Quote
tradclimbguy Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 Just buy one of these regardless and double check that your heater has an ODS (Oxygen Depletion Shutoff) system on it. http://www.campingworld.com/browse/products/index.cfm/Outdoor-and-RV-Accessories/Maintaining-Your-RV/Heaters--Furnaces/Catalytic-Heaters/Safe-T-AlertTM-Carbon-Monoxide-Detector-with-Memory-Scan/prodID=1041:src=CROS Quote

EWolfe Posted December 11, 2006 Author Posted December 11, 2006 I have read posts elsewhere that Catalytic Heaters don't actually "burn", they induce a heat-producing catalytic reaction, and thus, don't produce Carbon Monoxide. They do, however, consume Oxygen, so adequate ventilation is necessary. I NEVER leave them on when I go to sleep, regardless of ventilation. I like it cold when I sleep, I even keep the heat off in my apartment bedroom. Thanks Trad, I will get one of those. The Olympian I have doesn't have a ODS, it's the smallest model. Thanks for the tips and advice, all! Erik Quote

rbw1966 Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 I know of at least one case where a guy got drunk and passed out before turning off the propane heater in his tent. He never woke up. Be very careful. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 You'd never have that problem with a polonium heater. Quote
mountainmatt Posted December 12, 2006 Posted December 12, 2006 Little hard to fit into the van though eh? Quote
