sprocket Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 Are there any lightweight waterproof/resitant cases for hauling cell phones around safely in you pack? Any other suggestions? Thanks Quote
Redoubt Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 A cheap hardshell eyeglass case allows you to toss it in the bottom of the pack and not worry about it getting damaged. Add a ziplock for full waterproof. Quote
Ireneo_Funes Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 a) your car b) your house how do you make your victory cell-phone call from the summit, then? Quote
crackers Posted January 19, 2006 Posted January 19, 2006 i am not a phan of cell phones in the woods. that said, i'd use an aloksak to carry my, um, wallet in a waterproof bag. Quote

JoshK Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 I dont see the problem with carrying a cell phone. Carrying it does not imply using it. It dosen't upset my "middle of nowhere, nobody but myself" feeling. The only thing I would ever use it for is to let somebody know I was late to avoid needless worry and an unnessecary rescure attempt. With that said, cell phones still don't work very many places other than some of the higher summits. Quote
jaee Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 I agree w/ Josh. Having been rescued this past year, I can tell you things would have been very different if we didn't have a working cell phone in the group. Instead of being in the hospital we would have spent the night out while our partners hiked out for help and I'm not sure the outcome would have been so positive. But that's the great thing about personal choice. Leave yours at home if you want. I carry mine in a ziplock bag. Pelican cases look pretty good and are not too large or expensive. http://www.rei.com/online/store/Search?vcat=REI_SEARCH&query=pelican+case Quote

Perhaps the no voters are the tools compelled to jabber on it all the time. Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 I bring along a tincan phone. Doubles as GPS to find my way back through the woods. Quote

I've got to say your analytical skills are right up there with the best of them. Where are the analogy police when you need them? http://www.dilbert.com/comics/dilbert/archive/images/dilbert20060121046712.jpg For your analogy I'd correct it and say that it's like carrying a bolt kit and using it if you're in a life or death situation. As far as bolting a crack that would be more like keeping the 911 operator on your bluetooth headset during your approach "just in case". Quote
