catbirdseat Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 I overheard some fellow at UW Rock telling a story about a bloke in France who took a sledge hammer to all the holds on some well known bouldering route or routes. I tried googling it up, but didn't find anything. Has anyone heard a similar story? For all I know, this could be ancient history. Quote
RICHARD_CILLEY Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Its True. What do u expect from the French.Fucking up the rock is what they most like to do. Quote

RICHARD_CILLEY Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Mentally disturbed Frenchy lost his job at climbing gym.Decided to take it out on the climbing world.Screwed up alot of problems. Quote
catbirdseat Posted September 16, 2005 Author Posted September 16, 2005 I hope someone worked him over. But chances are that never happened and he's happiliy living on the government dole. Quote
mec Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 someone should find out his full name, and spread it around. I am sure the number of climbing partners he has will drop to zero... Quote
catbirdseat Posted September 16, 2005 Author Posted September 16, 2005 I rather doubt he would have done something like that if he had a friend in the world. Quote
RICHARD_CILLEY Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Read the John Bragg Interview on that Gunks link. Its great. Quote
EWolfe Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 That's Godoffe'l  I hope there are no copycats in other major bouldering areas. Quote
Norman_Clyde Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 I think the climbers in France should consider this an act of God, akin to a big rockfall like on Glacier Point Apron in Yosemite, or Mt. St. Helens. Sure, some time honored classic bouldering routes were lost, but for every route destroyed, a new route has been created! Life goes on. Quote
sexual_chocolate Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 (edited) Before you get a lynch-mob together (catbirdseat etal), find out the whole story. Â The guy had mental probs and was institutionalized, last I heard. Â I especially like catbirdseat's advocacy for violence in solving problems; makes his effete outcries about the Iraqi war ring a bit hollow.... Edited September 17, 2005 by sexual_chocolate Quote
bwrts Posted September 18, 2005 Posted September 18, 2005 is this a new story or in reference to the vandal of fontainebleau years ago? Quote
catbirdseat Posted September 19, 2005 Author Posted September 19, 2005 Old story. And yes, I knew the guy was a nut case. Quote

catbirdseat Posted September 21, 2005 Author Posted September 21, 2005 You don't want to see all those beanie-wearing, pad toting types getting forced into the hills do you? Quote
bwrts Posted September 21, 2005 Posted September 21, 2005 CBS, those tribal pad people already go into the hills. Ever heard of Rocky Mt National Park or Klem Loskit's Blue Ice area in Austria? Or pehaps you think most climbing areas are not in the hills.... Actually, I think some of the "vandalized" problems have seen repeats sans broken holds. Quote
