I overheard some fellow at UW Rock telling a story about a bloke in France who took a sledge hammer to all the holds on some well known bouldering route or routes. I tried googling it up, but didn't find anything. Has anyone heard a similar story? For all I know, this could be ancient history.

I think the climbers in France should consider this an act of God, akin to a big rockfall like on Glacier Point Apron in Yosemite, or Mt. St. Helens. Sure, some time honored classic bouldering routes were lost, but for every route destroyed, a new route has been created! Life goes on.

Before you get a lynch-mob together (catbirdseat etal), find out the whole story.

The guy had mental probs and was institutionalized, last I heard.

I especially like catbirdseat's advocacy for violence in solving problems; makes his effete outcries about the Iraqi war ring a bit hollow....

CBS, those tribal pad people already go into the hills. Ever heard of Rocky Mt National Park or Klem Loskit's Blue Ice area in Austria? Or pehaps you think most climbing areas are not in the hills....

Actually, I think some of the "vandalized" problems have seen repeats sans broken holds.
