jon Posted October 28, 2002 Posted October 28, 2002 So it has become apparent recently that our poor server is having trouble handling the amount of spray. We've had a few topics die because of it and error messages gallore. I'm going to try a few things to try to lower our server load but the reality is we have three options. 1. Ban Lurkers. Means that you have to register to read which isn't a big deal. 2. Get a better server. This is a pain and costs more money and....yeah no. 3. Switch to a different message board software which we are reluctant to do. Anyways if threads dissapear out of the blue don't throw a fit and start topics about how we are gutless and such, just accept it as a part of the technological wonder we call the internet. See a error message toss an email and we'll try to fix it. As Rod would say, Have a nice day! Quote
vegetablebelay Posted October 28, 2002 Posted October 28, 2002 Error An error has occured: Tried to open zero-sized topic 001025 in forum 23. at CGIPath/ubb_lib_files.cgi line 777. Please inform the board administration of this error so that they may fix the problem. Thank you! Quote
sk Posted October 28, 2002 Posted October 28, 2002 jon, just know that we love you and it will all be okay P.S I think banning lurkers might be an option... you know how I LOVE them Quote
icegirl Posted October 28, 2002 Posted October 28, 2002 I don't know how much room the pictures take up, but perhaps only links to pictures would be better and take up less space... Quote
jkrueger Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 Muffy got a job, so you should have roughly twice as much bandwidth available during business hours. Quote
j_b Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 banning lurkers does not seem like a good idea. I suspect it depends on your vision for this site but I'd guess that most go through a lurking stage. In other words the unability to lurk could lead to a lack of renewal. I am still confused about what brought these threads down. [ 10-28-2002, 05:05 PM: Message edited by: j_b ] Quote

No but we could ban lurkers from certain things like searching the site which is a big resource drain. Registration is so easy and anonymous there is no reason to not register even if you don't post. quote: I am still confused about what brought these threads down. When the server gets overloaded processes can stall and/or die, one reason poeple get 500 error messages and such. In the case of threads, user info, and private messages being erased, it is because the process that is involved with that has either stalled or died at the point where it was appending the data. Lambone Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 So is this the same reason that My Profile is not working? Ban the Lurkers... Quote

Dave_Schuldt Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 Why not ban searches during busy times? Or put a note on the search page asking people to wait for a slow time? Quote
allthumbs Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 Why not ban searches altogether. Are they really that important? Quote
b-rock Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 I use search to dig the gems of information out of the truckloads of crap, because in most cases my newbie-ass questions have already been answered. Quote
allthumbs Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 A gem of information on this site?? bwahahaha Quote
b-rock Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 One might be suprised what they could find, if they were interested in climbing... Quote
