carolyn Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 Yesterday I got my first day of drytooling in for the season. Around here there really is a season for it...when its too cold/wet for rock, but no ice. Anyway, I was humbly reminded how fuckin HARD and scary it is. Mmmmmmm....how I love pulling up on a tool planted on a paper thin ledge of sandstone. Even better when your face has no where to go but in front of the sharp object! The physics of pulling your body up, while pulling down on one tool and sideways on another. Or the ability to stack tools in a crack barely wide enough to fit the first few teeth of your one tool, so you can stand up high enough to reach a sloping ledge. which you thought was going to be bomber. The sound and smell of your tools grinding into the sandstone as your hold crumbles away. The pump! I dont know why I enjoy such pure fear and physical torture. Maybe because I know one day it will be much easier for me . Who knows. I love the movement, the stillness required, and the creativity of using the tools to move you up the rock. So, drytoolin.... Discuss! Quote
mvs Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 I must say, I can't get over the fear of bashing my teeth out or slicing a cheek off with that pulling-up-on-a-nubbin thing. Can somebody say something reassuring? Quote
Bogen Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 hammers on both tools. still hurts, but the marks go away sooner! Quote

dbb Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 at least you could just swing into that thar sandstone if you don't like the holds Quote
specialed Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 YOu can put tennis balls and a shit load of duct tape on the hammers to soften them up a bit. Quote
selkirk Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 You could just knock all your teeth out beforehand? Quote
ken4ord Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 What up specialed I noticed you changed from "shut the fuck up and climb" to "I prefer syrup", how sweet. Quote
specialed Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 Not if you knew what the syrup allusion was to. And I believe the exact averment to which you refer was "shut the fuck up and climb you 60 meters." Quote
carolyn Posted October 29, 2004 Author Posted October 29, 2004 I just let go of the tool and duck if I start falling. So far so good with NOT needing that mask alpinfox posted. Tho it might make a good investement. Too much weight added by putting a tennis ball on the hammer specialed!!!!! C'mon, whatcha thinkin?!?!?! Ergos and fusions dont really have much of a hammer to protect. Its more the sharp end I worry about. Hey, Im not complaining. I was just thinking what a freakin' crazy activity. And to think it can be so much fun at the same time. I must be sick! Quote
John Frieh Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 Petzl face shield: for protecting what little good looks one has... Quote
swaterfall Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 The only thing lamer than these are the people who wear them. Quote
John Frieh Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 Sounds like somebody has good looks to spare... Isn't that steve house wearing one in the new patagonia catalog? Quote
Rabscuttle Posted October 31, 2004 Posted October 31, 2004 I had a tool w/ an adze pop and hit me in the eye. Sliced the lens and scratched the cornea. Have considered cutting the adze off and duct taping the stump along w/ the hammer on the other tool but haven't committed to it yet. Quote
swaterfall Posted November 1, 2004 Posted November 1, 2004 I haven't checked out the new pattaguch catalog. Gotta do that. Quote
Alex Posted November 1, 2004 Posted November 1, 2004 Rabscuttle, instead of ruining whats probably a perfectly good tool, sounds like you just need something with a (more) modular head. Sell the old one here or on eBay and get something more user friendly. Quote
Dru Posted November 1, 2004 Posted November 1, 2004 Sounds like somebody has good looks to spare... Isn't that steve house wearing one in the new patagonia catalog? Ooooh yeah if House wears one all gumbies must follow suit! Did you get him to sign your jacket too? Quote
