SublimeSalamander Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 Are there any geocashing climbers climbers on here? (besides me) Does anyone have any good suggestions of summit caches? If your not familiar with what geocaching is check out this link. www.geocaching.com Quote
JoshK Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 Caching in wilderness areas or national parks is illegal. Don't leave crap lying around. Thanks. Quote
Gordonb Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 We geocache but we have not combined it with climbing. Yes wilderness areas and national parks are out for traditional caches, but national forrests are fine. Quote
JoshK Posted April 17, 2004 Posted April 17, 2004 josh! medicine! now! damn this weather! Ha! Seriously. This weather, combined with my hangover, is making for a quite dissapointing morning. Quote

cj001f Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 Don't leave crap lying around. Thanks. You mean like webbing, fixed anchors, etc? I'm not into geocaching (never done it, not much desire), but be careful where you point fingers.... Quote
Beck Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 wouldn't using a GPS to find things take a lot of the challenge out of the equasion? Maybe I'm not getting the right idea about the activity, but... Quote
cracked Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 Sounds pretty stupid. Like preschool for adults. Quote
ashw_justin Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 Well if the cache was say, a set of cams, and the scavenger hunt led you up a 5.11 alpine multipitch followed by an A5 traverse, then a rappel off of a single questionable piton, maybe it would catch on here.. Quote
gapertimmy Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 i haven't cached much lately, too busy skiing and eating steaksauce. but honestly, it is a great way to get to know a new area, most caches are located at points of interest, and scenic spots. i have found a few places to boulder because of caching. it is a real fun activity to do with kids, and depending on what type of cache you do, it can teach kids, old and young, how to not only use a GPS but very usefull map and compass skills, as well as more advanced GPS techniques like projecting waypoints. I kind of got turned off by the activity though due to the impact it does in certain locations. some 'hiders' don't take much care when they place caches, and cause de-vegitation and errosion around their stashes. But 'round here in central oregon, there are some fantastic hunts out in the desert east of bend, as well as a few really cool ones around grey butte by smith... which take you to some neat rock outcroppings. AlpineK Posted April 18, 2004 Posted April 18, 2004 Sounds pretty stupid. Like preschool for adults. So you're saying it's too advanced for you. Quote

SublimeSalamander Posted April 18, 2004 Author Posted April 18, 2004 Boy it sure doesn't take long to get off topic does it? Quote
SublimeSalamander Posted April 18, 2004 Author Posted April 18, 2004 Caching in wilderness areas or national parks is illegal. Don't leave crap lying around. Thanks. It most cases leaving a micro cash is no different than hiding a summit log. Quote
