cracked Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 I have a pair of the Smartwool Mountainear socks. On a recent ski trip, they got soaked. I took them off and put them on my chest, next to my skin, to dry them overnight. In the morning, they were still very damp. They also smelled worse than anything I've smelled in my life (like week-old un-neutered cat's piss). So where did wool get the reputation for being non-stinky and reasonably fast drying? I bought some Thorlo synthetics, and they don't stink very much, dry extremely fast, and work better. So what gives? Quote
Pandora Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 I own the same Smartwool socks and have never had them smell like week-old un-neutered cat's piss. And I don't put them on my chest to dry, I stick 'em down my pants instead. The nose knows, you know. Quote
slothrop Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Your feet sweat cat piss? You bought the SmartWool CatAss socks by mistake? You need to put steaksauce on your feet before you wear the socks? I have the very same socks, too, and they smell rather nice after a long day of slogging. Better than my feet, in fact. Quote
cracked Posted April 16, 2004 Author Posted April 16, 2004 I'll bring them back to REI for a refund. Quote
Stemalot Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 I find the Mountaineering model to be way too thick...maybe that's why they didn't dry as fast. as for the smell... sorry...but it could be just you...I don't have problem with them unless no washing for 4 or more days. Quote
icegirl Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 if you're feet have a tendancy to smell, try putting some of that hand sanitizer stuff on them after they are clean and before putting on your socks. Generally speaking smell means some kind of stinky, cat piss fungi. Kill the fungi, kill the smellies. there are a ton of the hand sanizers out there, look for one with "persistance" you will be amazed. Quote
marylou Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Never a problem with the Smartwools or the Dahlgrens either. Matter of fact, they hold up way better than the Thorlos, they dry faster , and they don't pill. I probably prefer the Dahlgrens above all. Never had any weird sock smell problems with any of them. K_Y_L_E Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Some people actually have allergic reactions to certain dyes or certain materials that make their feet sweat and stink. I actually have this problem, but mine is with dress socks, Synthetic dyed socks make my feet sweat and my sockes smell like ass .....welll that and I ran out of toilet paper. I have better luck with wool or cotton. So best advice is to use what works best for you. For instance now I wear my mountaineering socks to work. SEXY!!!! So now you know, and knowing is half the battle. Quote
pc Posted April 21, 2004 Posted April 21, 2004 Bridgedale socks are the best socks to buy. They dry fast and feel great on the feet, also they do not fall apart after a moderate trip. The model that is similar to the Mountaineering is the Summit................ Quote
Dechristo Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 I heard on the radio the Smartwool company was bought by Timberland. Quote
larrythellama Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 icebreakers merino wool clothing is better anyways Quote
fredrogers Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 I heard on the radio the Smartwool company was bought by Timberland. It's true. They will be run as a wholly owned sub-division under existing management with headquarters remaining in Steamboat. SmartWool Quote
whidbey Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 love my smartwool stuff! stinky me?..nope..you? sounds like it. Quote
Bergretter Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 I am in agreement with Stemalot, Mountaineers seem to be too thick, get very sweaty, and thus dry slow. My Mountaineers also seemed to have lost their elasticity above the ankle, which gets annoying. I've had good results with their thinner models. Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Mountaineers seem to be too thick, get very sweaty, and thus dry slow. replace "and thus dry slow" with "and are slow" and I wholeheartedly agree Quote
catbirdseat Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 Did you hear about the guy who was murdered because his faith healing treatments failed to cure his client of stinky feet? Quote
