pete_a
Just heard about this from a post on teletips... http://www.telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=12937 from that post: "The footbridge at Alpental collpsed last night due to 3" of rain on the current snow load. The sewer and communication lines were part of the structure. This means several weeks of repair before opening. Rob."

EWolfe
I am sure several weeks is an optomistic report. That sucks - Alpental is the best area up there. Man, though, there's gonna be a rockin' reopening day in a month or so..
Dru
Maybe it was all the Mixed Climbers stampeding over it that made the bridge collapse
lancegranite
Dru, you just beat the rest of us to the punchline!! On a more sinister note, it smells like sabotoge... A radical faction of the Mountaineers took responsibility for the bombing of a bridge east of Seattle today. This is the latest in a series of attacks against the "Mixed" climber crowd... Mixed climbers, a distant relative of snowboarders, represent the latest threat to the 97 year old climbing organization's reign of terror.. A press release from the Mountaineers summarized the violent response to the new climbs: "These climbs are the worst thing to happen to climbing in Washington since Charlie Bell's 1960 solo ascent of the Willis Wall." Sources close to the mixed climbers say the damage is not serious, but that several projects may have to wait until the repairs are made. It is rumored that the mixed group is planning to start "retro mixed sending" many popular summertime rock climbs in retaliation. "Barney's Rubble is first, then if the Violence does not stop, we will be forced to climb Bruce's boulder next"...

Fairweather
Went up to Crystal Mountain today for a little slush-fest. There was about 4 inches of heavy, heavy snow on top of what was once the good stuff. Sounds like its supposed to freeze over tonight! Tomorrow morning will be u-g-l-y for skiers of all persuations. Too bad about the bridge! Alpental rocks.

Bronco
Cool photo, looks like the bridge of doom! (it was probably due for replacement anyway).
Dru
unofficial reports mention a balrog sighting shortly before the bridge collapsed. Gandalf was unavailable for comment.

JoshK
Will the bridge break really cause a delay in alpental's opening? Anybody who isn't an idiot parks at one of the upper lots and skis down anyhow.

mbcracken
The problem is that the bridge also carried the communication lines and the sewage pipes! It'll be a while before they can get those pipes setup again. -Mike
