You sure can. Not only will removing the sides improve air flow, but it will keep dust from accumulating inside the computer. One of the main reasons you have a CPU fan is to keep dust, some of which is electrically conductive, from settling onto the CPU electrical leads. Pulling the sides off allows for greater air flow, so that dust doesn't get a chance to stick around, especially if the dust fan in your power supply is in good shape. Disconnecting the CPU fan will also increase your computer' overall performance. The fan tends to take power away from the CPU and mainboard, like the AC compressor on a car.

yellaf.gif follow the above info and you'll be buying a new cpu. There is the larger fan in your power supply, and often a smaller one on the cpu itself (on a heat sink) on the logic board. They are there for a reason. the cooler the cpu, the more efficiently it operates. get it too hot and it will literally melt, particularly with the high clock speeds these days. the fan on your cpu should stay put. as for the other larger fan, it also helps cool your expansion cards and the logic board in general by creating airflow. most cases (if you have a generic PC case) are designed to produce front-to-back airflow like a windtunnel. removing the case or the main fan prevents this from happening. It also prevents the case from doing its job as ESD protection, as it is usually lined with metal to provide a kind of faraday shield from static and grape juice and stuff. that said, plenty of people run systems w/o cases (I know one guy who found his cat sleeping on his logic board while running and it still works). the main fan does have a purpose though. if it is removable, there's a good chance you could replace it with a cheap new one from an electronics store.

This is all such rubbish. Trask, don't let this fuckhead try and keep you down. Think how much more spraying you could get done with a faster computer!! The fan is useless with the sides off, and unless there are cornal mass ejections from the Sun anytime soon, the Faraday Shield bullshit won't matter. And you don't strike me as a cat person. Plus, we all know that the rate of chemical reactions increases with temperature. No Fan=Warmer CPU=Faster Clock speed=Better. Give it a shot, if you think I'm full of shit, but Iaian has his head up his ass....

I pulled the sides. The offensive fan is the big fucker. Noisy as hell. It looks easy to unplug, just a connector. If I don't use this and leave the smaller fan on the power supply, I'll probably be alright...correct? (assuming I don't spill beer on it - I feed a cat but it's an outside mouser only)

The Cpu sits up off the floor and has unimpeded air flow and a clean room.

This thing is really only used for Porn and spraying at cc

you can set up a water-cooled system. any number of clock speed geeks will help you out. the ultimate in geekdom is to put some uv glow shit in the water then use a black light to make yur tower with tubes and shit look like sci fi afterbirth.

I'll put this to rest. Waited till 8AM, called three different computer stores/builders/service centers and they all said go for it. They all said it's way cleaner and I'll have much less dust build-up. They said to leave the one in the power supply. So I unhooked the big offender and now the CPU is half again quieter. Works for me. bigdrink.gif

Btw, I run two computers off a router. Blow one and I can still call you a moron. Bwahahahaha

Can't you just stick the computer under your desk where the carpet will absorb some of the noise and it won't be so noticeable?

I'm pretty sure you could pick up an Apple G4 Cube, or Imac fairly cheap.

Large heat sink, flow through design = NO FAN.

Although most PC user would have a hard time switching to a mac due to it's low learning curve, and intuitive Graphical User Interface... bigdrink.gifbigdrink.gifbigdrink.gifbigdrink.gifbigdrink.gif

Best laugh I've had in a while! That CPU don't need no stinkin' fan. To carry on with the car comparisons, pull that damn oil filter, those stupid engineers are just too conservative. You'll save tons of power because of the shorter distance the oil has to be pumped. Oh, and drain out the extra oil too, so you can save even more power.

I stand by Hikerwa's advance, if the noise bothers you, turn up the stereo, in another couple years you'll be half deaf like me and you won't care about little things like fan noise.

Oh, and Trask, if the fucker is too noisy still, it might be because it's vibrating (save the "jokes" for another thread, please) and or/rattling. Go the audiophile vibration attenuation route and get some Blutack (you know, those little squares of gummy adhesive shit that you can use to hang pictures without thumb tacks) and glom that on the housing of the fan until it quiets down.

Hey Formaldehead, what are you, a fucking comedian? You're a puke. You're the lowest form of life on earth. You're not even a human fucking being. You're nothing but an unorganized grab-asstic piece of amphibian shit. Your days of finger banging old Mary Jane rotten crotch through her pretty pink panties are over. the_finger.gif
