rollo Posted May 19, 2003 Posted May 19, 2003 http://www.mounteverest.net/story/DisasteronChoOyuMay192003.shtml Anyone know anything more about this? I haven't found any other sources confirming or denying. This is a major tragedy if its true. Quote
ivan Posted May 19, 2003 Posted May 19, 2003 "Cho Oyu is the world’s 6th highest mountain and second most summited 8000m peak behind Everest. It is known for being one of the easiest 8000ers and has the lowest summit/fatality ratio of all 14, 8000m peaks. " if this story is true, wonder if that ratio will remain so friendly? Quote
AlpineK Posted May 19, 2003 Posted May 19, 2003 The winds in those mountains are really strong. I know people who have been lifted off the ground while climbing there. Quote
cj001f Posted May 19, 2003 Posted May 19, 2003 No confirmation for that one - but there was another accident there recently. http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,6443762%255E13780,00.html Quote
Ursa_Eagle Posted May 19, 2003 Posted May 19, 2003 GII or Shishapangma would prolly take over if this is true... I certainly don't think that will stop people from climbing Cho Oyo though. 10 people would be worse than the Everest "tragedy" of 1996 that the media had such a field day with, so we'll prolly be getting more info. Ursa_Eagle Posted May 19, 2003 Posted May 19, 2003 no mention of german climbers, but there was a rescue on Cho Oyo earlier... http://www.reuters.co.uk/newsPackageArticle.jhtml?type=worldNews&storyID=295380 Quote
