Simply phenomenal. What are the odds? Marriage is not a contract. It is an insurance policy... for the woman!

Kurt, C'mom, man. It's me you're talking to. I know what chaps are for. I just wanted to pick up a pair, but I wanted the assless variety. sickie

I'll agree with ZZ on the Akita. Also consider a Norwegian Elkhound, a scaled-down version of an Akita, but still a lot of canine in the package. However, I think it's doubtful that you'd find one (purebreed) in a shelter or a pet sanctuary. The purebreeds can command some serious coin. We had a few of these over the years while we were growing up in Walla Walla. Great dog with kids (my dad built a harness and Apache would tow us kids around in our Radio Flyer wagon all day long), but whenever someone Apache didn't know tried to enter the yard, those long pearly whites would come out. The only way you'd get by him was to kill him. Very loyal, fearless, and yet he was just a big furry pillow to us kids. When we moved overseas in the late '60s, we gave him away to a co-worker friend of my dad's who had a ranch on the east side of town. For two weeks, Phil had to drive by our old house to pick him up and take him back to the ranch. Eventually, he learned that we were gone for good. He then defended Phil and his wife Bo and their horse ranch. One day, a pack of wild dogs messed with Phil's prime horses, and Apache "got into it" with the five of them. Ended up killing two of them, before he lost an eye and an ear and a big rip in his hind quarter. But he ran them off. Phil was amazed. Apache recovered and continued to defend the ranch until he died several years later. We've had other NEs, like Argenta (Latin for "Silver", because of her undercoat) and Leif (obvious name for a Norwegian), but Apache stands out in my memory as the coolest of them all. Maybe it's because I was so much younger then. Anyway, I cast my vote for a NE, but good luck with whatever you end up getting, Mel.

What does this mean, Kurt?

RCW 4.24.210 is the law to which O_W refers. Make sure you read, and provide a copy thereof to the landowner, the "Notes" at the bottom of the linked page. The law was designed/amended specifically for rock climbers. This has been on the books for about 5 years now, and IIRC, it has been tested in court and found not wanting. pu- Your landowner in the Tum Tum (or anywhere in WA for that matter) should fear not, as long as he doesn't start charging a fee for access/recreation that goes beyond gathering firewood. Thank you thank you thank you, Andy Fitz and everyone else who helped to bring this law to fruition.

CATCHERS DO IT IN THE DIRT
-
I remember my days in Little League. I started in center field, and ended up playing catcher after my first year for the remainder of my time in it. Coach said he wanted someone who always knew what was going on and where the next play was to be. His kid never pitched. He even made sure his kid was on another team. His name was Mr. Baskins. I never will forget him. He's probably dead by now. He reminds me of Danny Glover.

If we're gonna go that far "south of the border", then I would add/recommend: Vinci Pisa the beach at Tirrenia the mountains of Montenero Quercinella Castiglioncello

Skip Venice; stay even further north. Valle d'Aosta, Cinque Terre, and Milano or Genova are the places to be in Septmeber.
-
Northern Italy is a great idea, but pair it with half your time spent in Southern France. Hit Les Calanques for easy routes and lounging on the beach in the fjords. September in this part of the world will be brilliant.

I don't know Bug at all, except for an extremely brief meeting at Rope-Up '05, but now I'm sure that I like him. +2

Sorry. I didn't look that far; just the stuff on my Watched Topics list. I don't have the time to research that every reply I make isn't already posted somewhere else.

mtneagle- You should cross-post this to the Events Forum. Will get more exposure.

I could really run with this one, but I'll resist the urge. Come on, Sobo, please, oh, pretty please, run with this. I'll need something to read this afternoon during naptime No, you don't need for me to do this.

No, the X-15s are my primary museum pieces. The 'birds are the back-ups. The Birds haven't been swung in quite some time. You got my original Coonyard hexes for free. NOLSe made financial overtures to help me part with the Hummingbirds, but I just couldn't do it.

I haven't had the opportunity to meet Jeff Lowe, but 25 years ago when I first started (rock) and ice climbing, I worshipped him and Yvon Chouinard, and the ice they climbed up (ground they walked upon). I still worship them both; just look at my ice tools: A pair of X-15s for my primaries and a pair of Hummingbirds for back-ups.

I think it might just have been that the mic was really close to the source...
