  1. In other news, the owner of the Washington Times wants us to build a bridge between Alaska and Asia
  2. It's relevant to note that proof of both of those crimes appeared well after they were commited, 2+ years in the Lewinsky scandal. As the 2004 election occured less than a year ago it's a piece of disengenous sophistry to lump someone suspicious of those in power with the rightwing rapture loons. I'm sad to see you sink to that level Jay.

  7. Of course they are. They know the Democrats arguments are correct and they'll ultimately fail.
  8. To my mind Roberts is a Scalia; someone with a keen judicial mind, but whose ideology I disagree with. Miers seems like a Thomas; chosen to fulfill demographic desires and partisan loyalty.
  9. Paternal: Civil Engineer - 2 employers entire career Maternal: Civil Engineer - 1 employer entire career Both were more valuable on the homefront so didn't serve in WW2. Granduncle did, served as officer in Europe, wounded in Italy, ended war as G2 to unit serving in Vienna. Daughter occupied crib next to that of Austrian prime minister in hospital.

    That's rich

Your earlier question was about "feelings" and higher taxes. My comment was directed at KK's kneejerk "taxes are too high, Europe, blah blah" which is very illustrative of contemporary conservative groupthink. If you have some ludes, I'd love to take them off your hands. Make work much more pleasant

JayB- How nicely you ignore the cuts in other marginal rates and other tax reforms that reduce the burden on the lower and middle classes.

    One Nation under God

reductio ad absurdum I've met too many people who's only ability was to regurgitate the material they were taught in school to think that a degree on a cv means anything but the basics. Most people posess a deeper understanding yes, but all do not.

    That's rich

Why is that at all interesting or surprising, except to right wing ideologues, and why does it fucking matter? The rich get a majority of the benefits from our system (as evidenced by their being rich!) why shouldn't they pay proportionately more? Should the poor pay more to protect the property of the wealthy?

If you look at the history of Australia KK the single biggest factor seemed to be a high valuation of labor compared to Britain.

    That's rich

Historically Australia proves a good example of this. There was an interesting book a few years ago ( The Great Wave, here's a review which tied, among other things, increases in crime to a decrease in real wages and an increase in income inequality.
  20. You read the book? It's a good bit more about climbing/life than business. Not a bad read either.
  21. soon the transformation will be complete.

If you'd bother to look up the data yourself you'd see those sources aren't that different. If you'd bother to look up the data you'd see that "common sense" is once again wrong, as for a total of several decades America was heading to greater income equality (decreasing gini coefficent)
  23. Fortased just doesn't work as well.

    That's rich

To an economist in the ivory tower it doesn't. But that is to plead ignorance to the raft of social changes occuring. The very real outcome is a decrease in social mobility, which has always been the hallmark of America and one of the reasons for its success.
