  7. Orwell's novels are as subtle as a 2x4. He's a much better essayist. Huxley was a better novelist. I also find Huxley's concept of the state gaining power by infantisizing the populace much more relevant to todays world, as well as topical jabs at consumer culture ("ending is better than mending", no new sport can come unless it requires more equipment than the last, etc.) much more interesting.

  18. Where? Pre-tenure academia, yes. More than that for grad students. Corporate closer to 40-50 depending. Government research labs are closer to 30 in my experience. Los Alamos, Livermore and the like. A former boss termed them "welfare for scientists"
  19. In the basic research labs I come in contact with they are only putting in their dues until something brighter comes along (except for a few who like the lifestyle of working 30hrs/week)

    We are highly relative creatures, who rationally will take the best available in a given situation. As I'm sure you know many of the societal advantages were available 50 or 100 years ago.
