  9. Well, since you mentioned turd. . . Another time, one of our managing partners, a grumpy old bastard, came up to me super pissed and still in his running clothes drenched in sweat. He asked me if I had brought my dog into the office over the weekend to which I replied no, I had not. He stormed off leaving me wondering why the hell he asked me that. Well, it turns out that there was dogshit in the mens shower. He called our buildings security and asked for the security log for the weekend to determine who had brought the offending canine into the building. In the meantime, curiously I peered into the shower and there it was: a glistening pile of dog shit. Made out of plastic. The clever jokester who had left it there had sprinkled water on it to make it more 'life-like'. God that was funny.

  13. A few years ago I attended a meeting in our office in which my running partner (an attorney) was noticeably absent. When asked where he was, I was told he was 'out sick'. Remembering that we had just ran the day before I expressed consternation that he was ill. Someone else piped up and said he wouldn't be running for a while 'cause he was getting a vasectomy (he already had 5 kids). I went back to my office after the meeting and wrote a fake medical study titled "HEALTH RISKS OF VASECTOMY IN SEXUALLY ACTIVE MEN: A 30-YEAR CLINICAL, POPULATION-BASED STUDY", photocopied it a few times on New England Journal of Medicine masthead to give it a weathered appearance and left it on his desk with a note saying I had heard he underwent 'the cure' and thought he might be interested in this article I came across while doing some research. I never mentioned it again myself. One of the other attorneys in on the joke went up to "Joe" and said, "Hey, did you read that study Rob found? I was thinking of having a vasectomy but some of those complications sound scary." Joe brushed it off but the seed was planted. By the end of the day the suspense was killing him and he called his urologist who had never heard of the study and asked Joe to fax him a copy. Joe got a call back from his doctor who let him know he had been had. The 'study' was later published--at the recommendation of Joe's doctor--in The Journal of Irreproducible Results (a now-defunct publication). Let me know if you'd like to see a copy.
  14. Passat TDI's were re-released in 2004. As for emissions, here is what one site had to say: "turbo direct injection (TDI) diesel, is available as an option everywhere except in the five states that adhere to California emissions standards. In 2006, it’s available there too [due to reduced sulfur fuels required in 2006]. Contrary to what you may be hearing from the anti-diesel crowd, the TDI is an extremely clean engine if it is fed clean fuel. VW engineers maintain it is cleaner even than VW’s own 4.2L gasoline V-8. Quieter too they claim." The only part of the Cali emissions test that the TDI fails is the test for nitrogen oxide. I get better gas mileage (burn less to reach my destination), use a fuel which requires fewer resources to refine and meet all emission standards except one. I think thats a pretty good deal overall and am confident that I pollute less than most cars. Additionally, diesel motors require less maintenance and last longer, thereby reducing enviro impact even more.

  19. Sobo will be your best best for info on Yakivegas. I'm sure he will be posting shortly. In the meantime, I can pass on what info I know from visiting Yakivegas many times (one of my best friends lives there). Tieton is the nearest crag and has a lot of good crack and face climbing. Yakivegas is a cultural wasteland of strip malls with a bunch of decent taco carts scattered around town. Night life? You'd be better off in SLC. I can't imagine why anyone would 'choose' to live in Yakima.

  21. I LOVE my 97 VW Passat TDI wagon. Fuel-injected diesel gets me about 40-45 MPG on the highway with all my gear. I am 6'3" and have slept in the back many times. With good tires it handles snow conditions well. Good luck finding one though.

  24. Matt-- I'm not sure what you are referring to when you ask if I mean to suggest that its bad for the Forest Service to "approve" this crag. I'm not aware of any approval process for climbing areas in the NW. What I mean to suggest is I think it would be in our (the climbing communities) best interests to take a more proactive role in protecting this area rather than relying on the Forest Service to make any improvements. Frenchs Dome is a pretty small crag, a volcanic plug with maybe 15 routes total. I don't think its bad, per se, for the Forest Service to make improvements there, but I would prefer it be more of a grassroots effort. I fear the same thing Paul alludes to, that is a paved parking area, bathrooms, paved trails and increased enforcement of Forest Pass requirements. All this would really be overkill. The approach to the crag itself is maybe 500 yards and the trail itself is just fine. Its the area surrounding the plug that is heavily eroded and could use some work.
