  1. Trip: Asulkan Hut Ski Week - Youngs Peak, Sapphire col, Ravens, Forever Young, 7 steps to Paradise

    Trip Date: 03/15/2023

    Trip Report:

It is better to be lucky than good, and last week we were definitely lucky up at the Asulkan Hut.  Much thanks to @wbk for organizing the madness and bringing such a strong crew to the trip, including @therunningdogand @Trent.  I felt a bit old and weak with the crew assembled, but that was entirely a good thing.  Pretty inspiring to watch the younger guns charge hard all week!

We skied in just before a significant storm and warm up, content to lap the trees below the hut on our first full day in.  As the week went on, the weather and stability improved significantly, allowing us to ski classic lines like the Seven Steps to Paradise, Forever Young, The Ravens, and Dome Headwall.  Seven steps, in particular, the group skied many, many times.  So much good terrain up there, it is quite impressive!  I think that there are few huts that can compete, even those that you fly into.  I caught myself marveling nearly every day at our good fortune, but I suspect that it is often pretty good up there.

I had stayed away from Rogers Pass for many years, scared of the terrain and avalanche paths.  Maybe this was warranted, maybe I was too timid. Regardless, this trip was proof that mortals can indeed safely ski up there- if you take it easy.  Just remember, this isn't a coastal snowpack!

  2. I'd say keep it loose and go where the weather and conditions look good....for whatever.   Seems like the storm track will be north or south but not both.  Please post a TR with whatever you get up to!

That's a great time to up up on the Wapta or Bow-Yoho ski tours...but that might be too pedestrian.

  3. Chelan is a top-notch rescue unit, and now a member of the MRA!  @gyselinck and others did a great job this past fall getting Chelan Mountain Rescue through  the WMRA rock accreditation.

Bottom line, when things go bad over in Chelan County, you can be confident that these folks have your back.  But please, this isn't Europe.  We're all volunteer and it really is better if we're never called.

Fun to relive with photos.  Same route 50 years ago (1972) up N Ridge of Tricouni (NR) to Primus with Dallas Kloke, Reed Tindall, Scott Masonholder, Mike Theobald, Paul (not Bob) Greisman had a totally ugly tight-hemlock trailless brush bash approach from McAllister Creek to timberline.

HOW DID I MISS A 1972 SHOT OF DALLAS??!!!!

  5. It is easy to judge from our keyboards.... However, having avalanched my partners out of a couloir in Canada a few years ago (both OK with bruises and broken gear), I definitely am more prone to giving folks the benefit of the doubt when accidents like this occur. The danger was "moderate" at the time of the slide.....

It is not a safe hobby we practice, and we make decisions with incomplete information, on the fly.  If we think, as the living, that we are the safe and smart ones, we are probably deluding ourselves.  The full write up that NWAC produces on this accident will be good for all of us to read and learn from.

Condolences to the many friends and family affected by this.
