When people think of mounatineering, its usually names like Whitaker, Wickwire, Viesturs, etc. that come up. Fred has done as much for mountaineering than any of those guys, just not a publicly as them. And yes the NYT article is finally giving him the cresit he is due.

Nice article and video on Fred. The man will probably never get the credit he deserves, but I suspect most people here have the proper amount of respect for him.

We were in Boston this past summer. On a recommendation we took the unofficial Harvard tour (which I highly recommend). Thoughtful reply Bill. Yes, I suppose at some point it does become our problem. For each of us individually that is up to us. Some of us on this board and others have been affected directly by events such as the terrorist attacks on Sept.11 2001, embassy bombings, and attacks in places such as Mumbai. I'd love to see some of the energy spent on this forum and others like it be used to go after solutions, not just bitch about my dogma being superior to someone else's dogma. Good luck on your trip to Thailand.
