ice climbing 2018/2019 OR/WA Ice Conditions

Went up and TR'd Clear Creek Falls on the White Pass corridor. Solid ice, but a bit chandeliered and overhanging in places. Saw evidence that another party had been up there. -
So I did it! 22 years since the first time I climbed my first Cascade Volcano, I did it again! I went full-circle and climbed Adams again to see how my hip felt..... It felt great!! As far as I can tell, my rehab is going great and it's game-on! THanks all for the support and see you out there!! Yak

I've assisted people in selecting a PLB..... THe ACR is by far the best, it uses the maritime/military system. The Spot is finicky at best..... It's great if you want to update people how your trip is doing, but your "emergency" goes thru a third party and they are sitting in a cubicle. As far as the InReach, I have no experience with that unit.

So, I am a full year since my surgery. This coming weekend, I am going full-circle: my buddy and I are headed up to Adams to give the south side a go. I know it's nothing glorious, but it'll be my first real "climb" since my surgery. Wish me luck and if anybody sees me up there, say hi!! Yak

Gonna say +1 to both the South Side of Hood and Adams.... But my personal preference is to not Glissade (I have hip issues that prevent me). I did Lassen a few years back and I was a great solo trip..... It's just a trail to the top. Look at the Sisters, Broken Top, and St. Helens as well.

I'm not shooting down guide services, they do a great job and provide a great service to their clients. If you are looking to go up with a few friends and have a great amount of experience between you, I recommend that you do the WB on your own. It allows for a greater "experience" (if that can really qualify on the Butt). I've done trips both with a guide service and alone.... heck, I even lead trips myself many moons ago. Don't rule out a self-guided trip on Denali....... if you have the experience.

Ok, so it's been a bit since I did an update on how my hip's doing..... I guess it's time. Over the past few weeks, I have gone from walking my dogs around the park to jogging with them to hiking 5+ miles with weight on my back. Just this past weekend, I ran 5K and then did a 30mile bike ride to one of our local wineries. Everything is feeling awesome! I still have occasional soft-tissue soreness the day following a big excursion or after many days of use, but I'm progressing! I have started to plan my first "climbs" for the end of the summer and can't wait to get out and crush it! Hope everybody is well and enjoying their spring! Yak

I've got a pair of Summit Ski Boards that are mounted with Silvretta Touring bindings. They work pretty well, but nothing is as good as a set of AT skis....... -
+1 for Memorial Day Weekend. The camps were established and the weather was pretty good.

Thanks all for the support! I have been on my snowboard a few times and been increasing my hiking distance over the past few months....... This weekend will be my first foray on my skis, wish me luck!! Have a great week all! Yak

Well, I guess it's now December Ice..... I went up to White Pass on Saturday and Sunday, Clear Creek Falls is formed-up in it's early-season form on the right side. Also, there seems like there may be a few flows up at Strobach that are in........ I didn't get a chance to grab a pic, but when I go up this weekend, I'll snap a few and post them for y'all.

Try on as many pairs of boots as possible, regardless of brand. I 'wanted' a specific boot to replace my Radiums and after many many hours of trying on, re-trying on, and re-re-trying on, I ended up getting a pair of Dynafit Mercury AT boots...... and I have a 'La Sportiva" foot as well. Just my 2-cents

I'm in Yakima and it's over 60-degrees today..... Gonna have to wait for ice.

So it's Update TIME! I've begun to increase both my weight-training program and the lengths of my walks and hikes (not on the same days). I have noticed that my hip is starting to ache less and less after longer or more intense activity and that my strength is increasing as well. Keeping a positive outlook has been the most difficult part.... I have lost two very close family members in the past 6-weeks and that has weighed on my psyche. With that being said, I am now at the point where I can use exercise to help with destracting me..... which is always good. Hope y'all have a great week! Yak

I understand the fundamentals of weight training and periodization...... I was trying to make light of things.

I'm planning on at least a full year from my surgery date to be back to where I was..... But I can crank out a mean set of pull-ups! LOL!!

So, It's been 3 months since surgery and I honestly feel great! I started dynamic movements in PT, am cleared to bike, walk, use most of the cardio machines at the gym, and do many other things to help get stronger. This has been a tough month for me on many fronts, so my wife and I decided to do a "hike" while we were in Central Oregon over the Halloween weekend. While I know that a hike like what we did is not that impressive, I was able to do it at a 2.5 mile pace, have almost no discomfort, and was WIRED afterwards....... ready for more!! I can't wait for my next major goal: tieing in and climbing something easy. Here's a link to my track: http://www.movescount.com/moves/move81984500

I have a low-volume and narrow foot.... Sportiva for sure. Also, look a Boreal and Salewa; I've tried a few of their boots on and they fit me great!

Well, here's an update for anyone that's been reading this. Today I am one month, eleven days post-op. As per my PT, my range of motion is 100%, I've been off crutches for just over a week, and I only need my cane (Big Pimp'in) when I go for longer distances. I feel great! My wife and I went to the Wallowas this past weekend to get out of town. We did a TON of walking, took the tram to the top of Mt. Howard and did a bit of "hiking", and walked around the campground with the dogs. While I was sore, after a night's rest, pain was no-more. I can't wait to get out and play again!!

Monty.... Your story reminds me of myself over the past 10 years. I was in a nasty accident (tried to wrestle with a tree while snowboarding) about 10 years ago and that landed me in the ICU for 5 days. A year later, I ran my first marathon, did a trip to Denali, and in 2009 I saw my son's birth. Over the following years, my left side began to break-down, my knee started to hurt more and more, and I eventually ended up not being able to run more than about 25 feet. I had a nice little visit with my ortho doc and his PA (I ski with both of them) and they concluded that my hip was the issue....... Fast forward to today. I am 3 weeks out from surgery, my hip hurts less than the day I went in, my range of motion is improving, and I can actually see a light at the end of the tunnel.......... I just have to keep reminding myself not to over do it. I agree fully that PT = Personal Training (or more-closely Physical Terrorism), but it is worth it in the long run. We all need to keep our heads up when injuries happen and put in just as much time recovering as we do to our training and prep for our adventures. Keep on keepin' on. Yak

I've been on crutches now since the morning of the 31st of July. At this point, I feel like that annoying old man down the street that shakes his cane at the kids riding their bikes in the street. Twice-daily PT is starting to show the progress I've been waiting for; and surprisingly, I actually hurt less now than I did the day before my surgery....... God bless Percocet!! I'll keep y'all posted, can't wait to get back out! Yak

So.... I am T-Minus 48hrs from the day of days. I have done all the research, had a cortisone injection to get me thru the spring and early summer, got my last weekend of climbing in at Leavenworth/Peshastin..... Now it's time to go under the knife. Talk at y'all in August.

I worked for Camp Sheppard in the mid-90's and I wouldn't climb on those cliffs if somebody paid me. I did a bunch of looking around at the base of the falls and further down on the Palisades, and all the rock looks very loose. However, during a late-night session of boredom, we went to the "west end" of the rock cut and put up a route on the buttress with the crack up the middle, went at about 5.8..... I was last over 410 about a month ago and the crack has since been filled-in with brush, etc. I'd stick with the winter options in that area..... just my humble opinion.
