I would agree Bob. Those kind of shows are definitly more commercial than Colin giving a show at Feathered Friends to about 50 people who know eachother.

All the public slideshows I've seen are pretty low-key local affairs in which the climber / presenter is essentially doing the show as a favor to the community and maybe the local climbing shop. Even if the presenter mentions the companies name at the end of the show I would hardly call the show a "commercial" affair.

Its funny if you read most of the Supreme Court opinions on these issues you'd probably see the Justices wrangling with many of the same questions the reasonable minds here are, and probably slinging as many rhetorical insults to their colleagues as well. I think its a difficult issue in which the right result in theory (not restraining political speech) results in a difficult outcome, i.e. money influencing politics. Does anyone agree that its a sad commentary on human nature that the party with the loudest voice (who pays the most to inundate the media channels) gets the most support as opposed to the one with the most rational argument?

Freedom of speech isn't absolute. Never has been. The balance of freedom to chaos just depends on where we want to draw the line. I don't think hiding behind freedom of speech on this one holds a lot of water.
