Forrest? climbed on cooper spur with you and nick back in 2010 (jess was my partner). Where in New Mexico? rad state.. sorry for the drift I got a buddy looking for a roomie right now, not sure if he has solidified anything, he is beginner climber but runs/bikes/hikes. when are you looking to move?

NWAC issued a special forecast today in response to the above mentioned conditions. Makes it a bit easier (for me) to let go of climbing high on what looks to be a beautiful 'full moon' weekend. Was def sketched about more than just the new stuff given our weather cycle of the last few weeks.. seems confirmed with issues showing up 1-2 meters down. http://www.nwac.us/forecast/avalanche/current/zone/13/

I'd love to hit one of the mnts Sat night/Sunday climb but am a fairly wigged by avy conditions based on amount of new snow up high that looks to continue into sat AM, then sunday being sunny and rising freezing levels. sun/mon would be better imo for the new snow to settle it seems. Then again I've not been up and dug a bit and observed so its just off the forecast.

i think mr. doug was just being tongue-in-cheek fwiw I can't even think of any dirt roads that get plowed in winter...and that is a dirt road if there ever was one. on a side note cragrats still operate in winter and take snowmobiles or snowcats up to their lodge..hitch a ride or ride your own up! saw one of those ATV gator things with a sled track on it doing S&R recovery for 2 lost snowshoers (found right as we left the TH). That thing moved pretty nice

wanted to thank those of you who responded with the advice for this learning curve. Managed to get out on the setup two weekends ago and happy with it thus far thought I may as well throw a feeler out there for a preferred skin for spring/summer cascades? probably just going with g3 alpinist but open to other suggestions from those who can speak from actual experience.

they open it when the road melts. . . depends on the weather/snow pack i do believe. mid-June in a good year? There are a few places on the road that are north-facing that thus hold the snow longer. On the flip side with the burn of a few years ago I imagine the sun gets on a majority of it a lot better.

i was going to ask if it was actually firm up there or what. Didnt think it would be, assumed the rime would be coming down by the fridge-block size.

1) I take my corolla to the TH, even when there are still patches of snow, so don't worry about that, but know it is a muddy/dirt road 2) Going to summit from LC early-around sunrise or earlier often the snowpack is hard and some traction devices (microspikes to crampons) would be wanted. If you wake up at sunrise and get going a bit later, often I've not needed any traction device. 3) If you summit around sunrise, often the glissade is too firm so you either wait, walk down, or go too fast/rip your pants up/etc. Normally it is windy at pikers peak and 'waiting' for an hour+ for it to soften never appeals so.. ive camped and done it in a day plenty. if you got the time and weather camping is an absolute blast. If you are trying to see as much as you can in the NW, going for it in a day will give you more time to see some other sight. just food for thought. My preference is to do it in a day, start a little bit before sunrise, gets me to the main rise right as it is softening and puts me back ready for the glissade when it is in wonderful shape (soft, deeply carved). Your penalty for later is more time under sun (protect yourself, hydrate well) and descending in glob snow..slow. but not as horrid as ascending in that type of snow.

i hate given away the secret of this beaucoup-awesome camera... but in all honestly look at the sony NEX series. It is a little bigger than p&s but you get dslr-capable shots. that said you may hate the control/interface enough to say no way, but, on the nex-5n I found it is capable. could certainly be improved a lot, but, I don't find myself outright angry or losing shots due to interface/controls--so any 'frustrating' at times is well offset for the results I get.

#chronic-foot-in-mouth-disease keep an eye on it, a clear sky at night could give enough freeze to getcha a nice crust up high.

dorianlee and mhux: using a sony NEX-5N love photography and was updating from a p&s that did a fantastic job fwiw, but wanted more dynamic range, better low light. tried m4/3rds and found it to be only incremental improvement. almost resigned to lugging pounds of dslr stuff..fortunately went with NEX as it is light and a very capable piece of equipment. Sold the nex-5 for the 5n within a few months, the 5N really refined the original. the 7 series i hear good things but it costs a lot more. ben: it was windiest earliest...less so later, and higher we were on the slope. unless freezing level is at 9000ft i think you can have a fine climb this weekend.

Wayne...my name is Matt Glad to have saved you the trip. Yes I suspect there is nada ice in there right now. JRay, hmm so tie-in-rock bout at the spot with the rock with the japanese writing? There is one rock on the ridge about the size of an elephant or so? really big and about half way between the start of the ridge and when you start going 'up' on the route. that is the one we went behind to chill for a while out of the wind.

Trip: Mt. Hood - Cooper Spur Date: 4/15/2012 Trip Report: glad to have this one pan out after a handful of stymied attempts in the past few months. left CS snopark at 2:40ish stone shelter by 5:10~ or so rest a bit up at the big rock on the ridge (is that tie in rock?) top out at 10:15 and back at tline to ski at 1pm. wish i was skilled enough to have my skis with me at the top, maybe next year. saw a headlamp around treeline, at the stone shelter we paused and the light skied down to us (sounded icy). they bagged it based on the clouds/weather..I was going to at least wait until sunrise to make that call. conditions sunday morning were definitely nothing like i expected from the forecast (sun sun sun). Hood seemed to have an inverse cloud cap--it was all clear above with clouds halo around it. The volcanoes to the north and south all looked almost entirely visible so figured wed gauge hoods weather off them, glad we continued up. definitely one of the best sunrises i've ever seen. snow conditions were fantastic, not sure i postholed once on the way up, firm and secure but not icy or any noticeable crust layers to deal with. nice powder down most of the southside incl from summit ridge to hogsback made for a much more fun and happy on the knees descent. seemed like a pretty solid sized avy ran down newton creek token summit shot for posterity. was snowing a bit too. hawgsback reward Gear Notes: lightweight/shorty 2nd axe/tool. not necessary but kind of nice for going faster. beer always a plus Approach Notes: wife skiing at timberline makes carryover more fun

any general price range you're looking at? Like...not more than..? I have a garmin 62csx or whatever it is, slightly older version than the current 62, but with compass and altimeter. I will probably sit on it for many more years since it gets the job done when I need it and a set of lithium batteries goes a year for me with occasional use for wayfinding and point marking. BUT, i did test one of the newer ones and they have definitely updated the processors or something, one of my biggest gripes is that my garmin can take an excessive amount of time to re-draw while you are panning around if you are scanning the map and have full topo detail on it. That is slightly frustrating, but not a navigation thing too much since it draws fast when zoomed way in or way out, its the mid level that goes slower. the new ones seemed damn speedy.

my favorite. cause you can drink beer and eat chips while you do it.

Well from the looks of it you're having the most fun tuesday morning of anyone i know. i have a nice pic of an avy that rolled down newton creek on hood this past week, wondering where to post it so here is.

Ben you are probably good to go with your bladder for the rest of the spring/summer in oregon. 10deg seems a lot colder than normal for 8 er 9am up on the hogs this time of year. anyways i did my part with the heated gatorade that seemed to have lost all the goodness of its flavor. just give me a heads up on what you need up there next time and I will hopefully be of service.* *like any good offer, this does not include skis, ski boots, bindings, GPS, or gift cards. limited to stock on hand.

this was last summer @ cold springs. Looks single walled. thin poles. Was a guy and gal in there. Looked a bit cozy. However, if the weight is 5lbs or less then I think that is golden.. My Rab Summit Mnt is 4lbs~ and cozy is an understatement.
