...speaking of which, be back in 5...
  3. Isn't telemark Norwegian for "Hey guys, wait up!" All I have to say is breakable crust.
  4. Has anyone tried the system presented by Mark Twight in his book? A strict regimen of a maltodextrin goo every 1/2 hour and 750ml of water/hour to maximize gastric emptying supplemented with a few salts and a bit of protein to keep things running. Craig Connelly (sp?) basically outlined the same thing in his book. Seemed to be based on some pretty solid science. I've been trying it out while hiking and so far so good.
  5. That's it! I'm starting a new company called MuMuMellon.
  6. I posted it elsewhere but I have seen liquid helium cool through the superfluid phase transition. I think we got it down to about 100mK or -273C with a dilution refrigerator. Here's a picture, although it's hard to see anything. If you look closely you can see the top of the liquid helium in the cylindrical sample volume.
  7. The transfer is going well so far. I bet you're all on the edges of your seats. The worry is that the vacuum insulating the transfer line might go soft. That would be bad. LHe is expensive stuff. As long as the magnet stays superconducting all is well in the end.
  8. My LHe has arrived. Transfer will commence shortly. I bet I win the contest of who has seen the coldest object. I worked on an experiment in Berlin where we had optical access to a liquid helium bath as it cooled through the superfuid phase transition.
  9. The blast freezer of the shark fishing boat I worked on for a month when I was 18. There's nothing like putting on a freezer suit in 20+C weather.
  10. I think I heard someone yell that at a dog once.
  11. Waiting for a dewar of liquid helium.

Type 1 feels like pushing out a porcupine backwards with out the reward of a giant splash.
  13. It wasn't much but the second pitch of Apron Strings is one of my fondest memories. I was totally pumped from seconding the first pitch and heading up that first dihedral was as hard as I've pushed myself. Running it out through the top was actually pretty fun. I'm not so proud of the rest of my climb up the Grand but hey, I made it to the top. Next time... RuMR, your signature is depressing. I do like the positive energy threads though.
  14. Thinking about that crux still gives me the willies. The rock up there is total crap. Good work at getting past that notch in one piece. Thanks again for the ride up there. To bad we didn't meet you on the summit but we weren't sure that you hadn't backed off.

Kid Rock -> The worst of both worlds. However there is good music in every genre.

    best vacation ever?

My band went on tour in Switzerland and Germany for 3 weeks. That was an experience I will treasure for the rest of my life.
  19. Looks good although it's a little out of my league at this point. You could post it at squamishclimbing.com too.
  20. If you have to deal with the person on a regular basis hatred will get you nowhere. Deal with the behavior or remove them from your life.
  21. There's a bit of a learning curve to it so most people start out with a little beginner kite to learn how fly one. Even those can pull you off your feet in a big gust. They're about 2.5m^2 and $180. If you live in Vancouver the guys at Airtime on 4th near Alma can probably tell you everything you need to know.
