Photography Clinic: Most climbers try their hand at taking some photos while climbing. I do all the time. Some would say that I would benefit from taking this clinic on Climbing Photography taught by Sean O'Connor of Freesolo Photography. I have my share of butt shots in my photo collection along with a few choice self portraits starring my nose hairs. It can be hard to get the right shot. So why not get some instruction from the pros at Freesolo Photography. This is the write up of the clinic from the SmithRockDetour.com: "Whether you're a climber yourself or not, this is a great clinic if you want to learn some of the special aspects of photographing other climbers. Everyone knows that when you bring a camera on a climbing trip, you often come home with a lot of shots of people's butts. In this clinic you will learn the artistic theories of climbing photography. Sean O'Connor has a decade of exprerience in professional photography with a speciality in adventure photography." Sean has the experience and passion to teach and share from an experienced climbers prospective on how to get the shot we are all looking for. He has been a climbing guide and has taken his wealth of knowledge to start a company that is able to get it right in the field of adventure photography. So if you have the desire to take better photos take this opportunity presented by Climb Max Mountaineering and the Smith Rock Detour and seize the day to become that photographer you always wanted to be. If you want to participate in this clinic or enjoy some of the other events register at Climb Max Mountaineering at 928 Northeast 28th Avenue, Portland, OR - (503) 797-1991 or visit the online registration site. Why is patience a virtue? Because not many people have it? Plaidman

The best Rick and I could do was dry tooling in his back yard on his apple tree and maple tree. We were calling the routes WIA3 and WIM4 The A is for apple tree. The M is for maple tree. The higher you get the smaller the branches the rating goes up. Fun times. Jonesen for the ice. Video: Apple Tree WIA3 - Plaidtastic Rick on Apple Tree WIA3 - Cold One Alious Plaidman

It even hurts when it happens to other climbers. Stolen Gear: Taken from my vehicle in Redding, CA on Aug 9, 2010. Osprey Advent pack, full climbing rack with mostly passive pro, 6-7 cams, cleaning tools, etc. Notably, several small Saddlewedges, 8 large lockers, incl 4 Petzl Williams, most nearly new. Most of the gear is marked with yellow paint. Also Arcteryx, Cadillac harnesses, lots of long slings, biners. 1 doz. draws with Neutrinos & Hotwires. If you see anything like this, PLEASE help me get it back, esp. my beloved Saddlewedges. REWARD John Pruett, still out there climbing. Link from SuperTopo.com Stolen Gear

Did you know that you need a permit?

I have never climbed it. But I would suggest going with an experienced climber for your first time out. I may be wrong. I just would go about it that way as you indicated that it was your first mountain. For instance I know that later in the year there can be a problem of rock fall on Mt. Hood. You need to start early so the snow is hard. It is best to climb when the snow is hard as post holing is a bitch. Like I said I have never invested the time in investigating climbing Mt. Saint Helens, but there are a few skills that are required in mountaineering.

I just found out that I can bring my daughter down for The Detour. Maybe she will get turned on to climbing by seeing the boulder comp. She loves to camp and with the music and festival setting I know she will have a blast.

Kidding! If I have to bend the laws of physics and move the sun, which I am able to do, it's on the way. O.K. I can't really do that. But it would be neat if I could. Plaidman
