  1. My injury was due to skiing off a cornice in a white out, so no shark attack story necessary.
  2. Only if John Frieh bathes with me.
  3. I'm 3D printing a singularity.
  4. Ya blow up a comet and this is what happens.

Fuck. You can live in my basement, then. The kids will have to be sent away to boarding schools in the Philippines.

    Snohomish

Snohomish County: All the traffic of a major metropolitan clusterfuck with none of the culture. Actually, the traffic's way worse than if you live in the city proper, where you can walk/bike/bus/Car2Go to just about any place you want to get to. You're a poster child Urbanite now. Trust this small town boy's opinion here: There's no going back without dying a slow, spiritual death. If you were a country-mouse at heart, it'd be s different story. Lose the house in Sno and figure out how to buy here. You, of all people, need to be here. If you decide otherwise, TGI Friday's and the Buzz Inn are still going strong.
  11. Hey Fatty.
  12. There were two cycle tourists riding the Icefields Parkway last this winter when I was there. The previous few days had seen -10 F. No room at the hostel. "No problem, we'll just camp". Dayum. At least they pretty much had the road to themselves.
  13. 3D printing has been around for decades. It's always been limited to a very few materials - mostly plastics of a pretty generic nature. It's a slow process. Real slow. I've completed only several toes of my first Tvashbot after hundreds of hours of printing. The highly irregular toenails were extremely difficult to get right. Nanobots and bioengineered self replicating systems will pass 3 D printers by they were standing still, which is about as fast as they ever move on a good day. The buzz around 3 D printers has more to do with Twitter than technology, really. Other than finer resolution and an open source design for the printers themselves (hyper geeks only), there's very little new under the sun here.
  14. You don't know how to ski?
  15. Most design projects go south during conceptualization. To prevent this common mistake, take a step back in your design process and ask yourself the following questions: What's the problem I'm trying to solve? Is it a real problem or one I made up for my project? Have a chosen the solution (magnets?) before identifying the problem I'm trying to solve? Hint: Don't do this. What design work will I need to do to solve this problem? Do I have access to the expertise necessary to solve this problem? Have I done quick, back of the envelope feasibility analyses for each proposed solution to prevent a lot of wasted energy pursuing something that never had a chance of succeeding from day one? If you can't figure out how to do this for your proposed technology - its probably going to be a dead end for you.
  16. Anthony Lakes in NE OR. Pow at 8000. Stay at the old Geiser Grand in downtown Baker Cit - their rooms are discounted in winter and they often hand out lift ticket discount coupons. Sweeping views from the area - its the highest thing around for a ways.
  17. I have one of those. And now I know what it is.
  18. You think 2D ink is expensive...
  19. A virus is a dunghill, and I, a cock who climbs upon it to crow.
  20. I'm 3D printing an army of Tvash replicants right now.
  21. Looks like the White House wimped out. Their brief fell short of claiming Prop 8 was unconstitutional - even after the GOP renegades' brief did exactly that. Limp.
  22. It's an interesting topic that illustrates the general decentralization brought about by better communication and deeper experience.
  23. Well, we all know who's going to go for the one man/one women natural law thang. Here, originalism provides a ready excuse for religious bigotry. The state failed to provide a link between denying same sex couples wedding licenses and bolstering the stability of the family in general when Prop 8 was struck down by the 9th Circuit. It's hard to see what they're going to do differently this time around, but hey, it's the Supremes. Anything goes, myan.
  24. Local populations are capable of taking environmental stewardship on, no? They have the most to gain or lose, and they hang out there anyway. Sirdars have a lot of money and influence in the area. They've already done a fair bit to help clean Everest up in partnership with others. They know the environment.
  25. Both represent an historical shift in policy, and any victory would be hugely welcome. It would be hard to imagine a scenario by which a striking down of Prop 8 on equal protection grounds (one of two primary arguments) would have any other effect than to put any state with a marriage ban at risk of a similar suite with no real chance of winning. The other argument is one of due process - the state must show a compelling reason why it denies certain rights of marriage to gay couples. The decision may split the difference by requiring states like California to recognize gay marriages performed elsewhere but not necessarily allow them to take place, but I don't see how that inconsistency would go unchallenged for long. Any decision is going to tear DOMA a new asshole.
