Yeah, women dying of cervical cancer is SO much cooler than drug companies making money off a vaccine which prevents cervical cancer. Good point

Hey, where can I rent a variety of ice tools? I'm ready to buy a set, but I want to try out several different brands until I figure out what I like. Anybody have good recs for a shop that has a variety of tools for rent? I'd like to try the quarks (new quarks, and ergos), cobras, alp wings, etc second ascent? Worst comes to worst, I guess I could always "buy" a pair at REI, they'll always take them back, right?

Also, the CDC says it's possible (though rare) for HPV to be transmitted to an infant during vaginal birth. Anyway, Kev, don't you have a boy?
-
You're assuming her husband ALSO waited until marriage to have sex. According to the CDC, at least 80% of women have HPV by age 50.

for what it's worth, my sister did not vaccinate her children and they attend the lake washington school district with no trouble. She had to sign some form is all, nobody made a big deal about it. However, my wife and I vaccinated our children, because we don't have a problem with science. (hey, this is in spray, what can I say?)

I don't understand why you are up in arms about this, kevbone. It sounds as if you think this will be the first mandatory vaccine ever, or something. But it's not. For example, Texas requires "mandatory" polio vaccines (allowing for various exemptions for personal/religious reasons). If you are against the mandatory HPV vaccine, then you should also be complaining about mandatory polio vaccines, etc. Are you? Do you support repealing all vaccination requirements entirely? Or only HPV?

I'm interested in the Olympus Stylus 720 SW. Anybody used this camera? I'm mostly interested in it for it's shockproof/waterproofing. But does it take OK shots? I'm totally ungifted with a camera. Or, does anybody have any other good advice for a foolproof camera that won't break when I invariably sit on it, etc, that takes marginally good shots for completely incompetent photographers? tia

you're all a bunch of land-speculating yacht owners.

I thought AIDS was caused by flouridated water.

Yeah, there was a definite basalt scree slope to access the cliff. It was a bit (north?) past the cable, I think around milepost 8? Kinda tiered.

Trip: Banks Lake - Date: 2/2/2007 Trip Report: Went with a friend to banks lake to take my first shot at ice climbing. Left at 4 am, hit the sunrise over the flat horizon of the eastern plains. good views, very nice This was my first time climbing ice. Joe let me borrow a pair of grivel machines. We climbed what I think was agent orange. Super fun, I'm hooked! Put in two pitches, bailing at the top where the ice got kind of crappy. I was slow and bumbly, and fell a couple time as my tools or feet popped out of the ice, but I figured itout. We tr'ed the second pitch and I cursed my way to the top. Somehow I got a bruise on my forehead. rapped off, good climb, challenging. I think I'm getting to learn which placements to trust and which to not We climbing something to the left, really nice pillars with a slight lip/roof underneath the top of the climb. Joe did a great job, stemming against a large icicle. He set up a tr for me For this climb, he let me try one of his leashless tools in my right hand which was cool to try This last one was a really challenging route for me. The first section was pretty easy, but climbing onto and up the pillar was really hard work. With a lot of cursing and shouting (sorry Joe!) I made it to the small roof. I managed to get over the lip, which was extremely fun. I was dogging the line (a lot) but I finished it, while cleaning gear, and not falling, just using the line to rest. So, I was pretty happy. Clearing the lip was definitely challenging. Nice plastic ice above the pillar, good sticks. Of course, Joe had to deal with a lot of "watch me" and "keep me tight here" and other various moaing. He was extremely encouraging and that got me to the top. I'm really hooked, I gotta get me some tools now. Sweet Great day, I'm totally pumped. Thanks for the climb joe (and the beer )

Did you guys see that Al Gore was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, for his work on global warming?

I heard about this on Sunday but never got any info on it. Glad to hear everything worked out. Best wishes to your partner. Heal up quick!

Sounds like bursitis to me, but I'm no doctor. I would be careful doing anything without a diagnosis. Some injuries can be aggravated by stretching -- personally, I'd talk to a doc. Any health coverage with the new job?

Inside, or outside of the hip? Does it hurt when walking/hiking downhill?

Sweet, thanks guys. Appreciate it I think going to bite the bullet and teach myself to ski. Thanks for the info -- I think I'll take another look at it in a few months. Sounds like I will enjoy it more on skis.
-
Sweet, thx for the beta! Yikes, sounds like quite an approach. Alex, do you recommend skis simply for flotation, or for ease of descent? In other words, do you think snowshoes would be a fair substitute? I gotta learn me to ski one day.

Silver Star is one that's been on my list for a while. Is this a good winter route? Which route do people usually take? Silver Glacier? What's the winter access like? tia!

Dude, your comments always make me sad. Someone needs to send you a puppy or something. Can someone work on that?
