  1. Great video... Last time I got stuck in that kind of shit, I ran out of smokes. Looks like Ivan came prepared properly.
  2. Bad news. Sorry to hear about it. While I did not know the people involved, it sends a small jolt through my heart because we all know and love that mountain so much, that we hate to hear news like this.
  3. Is that the hangover picture? Or just a psychotic guy with a weird look?
  4. No way, really? I always wondered what would happen if you ate the "do not eat packet" in those Mountain House meals...
  5. I can never forget the dude that puked his mind as he came up to the Hogsback ridge on Mt Hood. I was watching this guy struggling up the hill, and I was thinkin' that this would be a great time to smoke a camel... Well, dude came within ten feet of where I was sitting, and the wind shifted, and he apparently got a whiff of that sweet Turkish and American blend, and that was enough for him to hurl the three power bars and half a liter of cytomax in his stomach... Strange. I have never seen some one react like that to the "Turkish and American" blend before... (BTW, some crazy lady told me that I should leave from the hogsback if I thought it was funny to smoke cigarettes at altitude!?!? Eff you lady!)
  6. Not to worry, the sun did not change this demographic of snow. I tired and tried to gain an edge on that mess last Sunday... Freeze/thaw/freeze snow sux.... On the other hand, I dug a pit on saturday, on the clark canyon headwall, and it was smooth, with only a unstable layer near the top which was cemented in... Smooth turns coming down. Got harassed three different times on the up track by the ski patrol nazi's from Meadows.. Eff them. And they all where on AT gear.. Like you don't understand why we do this?
  7. I watched the video again since you posted it...] Those are Spantiks. With G12 Newmatic crampons... But you're right, that's not what he climbed with.... Damn you La Sportiva, and your sponsorships!
  8. If you watch that little gear video on the patagonia website, that guy House or something like that showcases his gear used on the Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat. He was using Spantiks, and his crampons where Grivel G12. Dunno what size his boots where, but you should try those...They apparently fit his boots.
  9. There are some blazes (blue diamonds) early on the trail from the Parking area. But from there, you should be able to see the cut of the trail in the trees, especially in the burn. Any of the old blazes that where are burnt away. Most likely you can just follow the skin track from all the other bozo's like my self that have been up there. Above the cabin, you should be able to just keep heading up hill until you break from from the trees. Stay away from heading too far south, because you will run into a very deep and steep polallie creek canyon. Once above the tree line everything else should be self evident. Bring a map and compass, and you'll find your way just fine.
  10. Time to do some waterproofing in that there basement. Or better yet, move out of your moms house already.
  11. I always just tie a regular lace knot, and then one more overhand knot. My Nepals, nor my Trango alps ever loosen after that. Took a few trips with constantly loosening boots to figure this out.
  12. Looks like the users in your provided link thought the tent sucked too....
  13. I picked up a pair of the Alps this summer. So far I really like them. I don't have any comparison to the Evo S, because I never tried those on. (I could not stand the glaring red color) I use them mainly as a hiker, with some scrambling, and they have been holding up fairly well for me. They are light years ahead of the boots they replaced (Garmont pinnacle) and hike very well. One thing is that they are not insulated, so my feet do get cold when it's cold out. But then again, they are designed as a summer boot, so this did not suprise me. I got mine at Mountain Shop in Portland, and it looked like they had quite a few available. But then again, this was six month ago.
  14. I bought a tele set up this year off Craigslist.... I am gonna try this craft at a local beginners hill called Summit... $20 for a lift ticket does not sound like it will break the bank. And if tele completely sucks for me, I'll just make sure I bring my Splitboard, and get my shit on! (I know, the conversion from snowboarder to skier might happen, but hey, that's just how the ball rolls in life)
  15. Hey Roger, That beacon basin is rad!! I spent several days in that place practicing my craft... But, one time I was there, early in the morning, I got sort of chewed out by some Mazama instructor who apparently was teaching an Avy class. He was miffed that I tracked up the meadow and had probe marks all around where the beacons where located. He claimed that it made it too easy for his students to find the beacons.... Is this a problem, or should I just ignore that guy in the future? I like having this resource at my, and more importantly my partners disposal, because, really, this is the only place I want to do this stuff. Ya know what I mean? I hate to be an intrusion, but the practice is valuable, and I would hate to be excluded.
  16. Nah, he is talking about this nasty shit called "klister"... It comes in a tube, and you dollop it onto XC skis and the smear it around similar to kick wax, except this stuff has the consistency of honey, and twice as sticky. Usually it gets all over your gloves, gear, and makes a terrible mess. It works well, once you clean all your shit up after wards. You do have to scrape it off before you go back down hill, which is another mess in itself as well. The XC world has pretty much replaced this stuff with scales,Regular kick wax etc. and as far as AT/Tele/Splitboards are concerned, skins.
  17. Don't you find that Klister is just an absolute fooking mess to deal with? I have used that stuff on my waxless BC skis, but would never dream of using it with my skins. I would have to scrape that stuff off before the decent. Is there something I might be missing regarding Klister vs. skin glue? I would imagine that the klister just would make a gooey mess on your skins. Not to mention leaving alot of residue on a hot waxed p-tex base. Tell all, please.
  18. I carry the 53 cm version with a hammer as my second tool, but then again, I don't really climb anything "core"...
  19. just make sure that you get it from the web site, or you will pay retail. But, hey, that's what is nice that there is a patagucci outlet in PDX...
  20. According to Patagucci and from others I have heard, is that the DAS is intended to be a belay parka. One that you pull over all your other layers when you have to stop, belay, or some use it as part of a bivy system with a half bag. I don't own one, I just thought that it seemed like a good buy. I also noticed that on the patagucci site they had some micropuff on clearance as well, but the sizes where more restricted. Oh and yeah, I think that all this "green" patagucci stuff is actually military surplus.
  21. The Pouges are best listened to when you are fucked up drunk, and just got 86'd from Dino's on Hawthorne for good...
  22. If green is your color, this is a smokin' deal. http://www.patagonia.com/web/us/product/product_focus.jsp?OPTION=PRODUCT_FOCUS_DISPLAY_HANDLER&catcode=WS_FA_US.WEB_SPECIALS.MENS.JACKETS_DOWN/SYNTHETIC&style_color=19035-984&ws=true
  23. It's here!!
  24. Whats going on with the rope in this picture? Or is someone down the gully there contemplating something?
  25. This kind of story makes me regret letting my Amateur license expire. On the other hand, this could be seen as propaganda from the CW only crowd to make a point about how every Amateur should have to learn CW to pass the test... While dufus was carrying around some CW rig, I'll bet that if he tried well enough, he could have found cell phone coverage from a peak... But noooooo... He had his trusty Elecraft KX1 mini CW tranceiver...
