  5. Unfortunatly this just happened to me 3 1/2 weeks ago too. I went to an orthopedist because my lowerleg & foot swelled and then had yellow splothes , kinda like sherbert ice cream with purple blueberry stains on it too. the whole back of the leg was completly bruised too. Anyway, the doc said that it was a bad bone contusion, and if you don't see scab-like spots where it hit the hardest then you are okay. But I still have a very big, unattractive bump on the bone of my shin. Ice it, and he said keep the running down to only 30 min a day., I just wrap it up tight up to the knee so the blood goes up, but not too tight around the knee artery thing. I have a question: Can I get surgery on my shin if that bone bump doesn't go away? I am just considering growing really hairy legs to hide it.
  6. A friend, escolar, and I did this route last Friday and it pretty much sucks. period. We were climbing and wondering when we were actually going to get to the good part the whole way, the instructions made it sound better. The pitches were short, the rock, for Wa pass, was relatively dirty and there wasn't those long fun cracks so you never get into it. All in all it is a pretty dumb climb with redemption being the most amazing scenic scape and very pleasant weather.
  7. Nice Mike & I! that place looks great!!! Are goats really out of season, what do you recommend for seasoning, or are they just more prime in springitime? Inquiring minds need to know.
  8. If it's a nakey pic just make sure my face isn't in it . pretty much the coolest frickin people in the world work in the shop.
  9. Climb: Cannon Mtn Couloir-Ski- No Shirt, No Skins, No Problem Date of Climb: 7/10/2006 Trip Report: The morning was bright and I was off to ski something. I ran into a friend at coffee on my way up to Mtnrs. Crk trailhead to ski the backside of Dragontail & she mentioned Cannon Mtn. Couloir still looked pretty decent last time she looked. So, I drove up and it looked like there was some snow alright! Not knowing anything about the approach, ski, topography combined with getting a late start this looked like a great option for freshly waxed skis, and a little more adventurous then the other memorized and boring hike to Colchuck plus I didn’t feel like running into 100 people asking “what? so yah think yer gonna ski huh?” I figured the best approach would be to walk along the old logging road at mtns. creek trailhead and jet up from there. I thought this may be a good road to bike in the future, but don’t do it, definitely not worth it. The road had been washed out by slide awhile in, so here I started up the ridge of loose boulders in ash, then slide alder, this was just the foreplay to nettle bushes, buckbrush and a ton of fallen burnt trees (really fun when you are wearing shorts!), the frolic through a lupine hillside made it all worthwhile, this is where the sun was beating down and I tried to even out my tan sans top. I then went up more and over a couple more ridges to finally see the snow, I was actually on a ridge above it, so I had to descend, then ascend again and I was there 5 hours from leaving the car! Another hour up to the top, the sun cups weren’t all that bad in the fall line, but there was quite a bit of rock debris not making the flow that great, I probably should have taken another lap or two but I wanted to get home before dark. I tried to hike down the stream runoff but kept getting cliffed out, sketcheroony-roo. So I scrambled back up the ridge and down ze way I came, not in ze middle and ran down, took 3 œ hours from base of ski. Got home to a cute boy that had made me dinner and laughed at my bloody legs. Gear Notes: No shirt No skins Orbit bubblemint gum Approach Notes: Ouch Old logging rd.

  11. Definitly a Northern Pacific rattlesnake, eyestripe and diamond shaped head. A gopher snake will sometimes rattle their tail in dry leaves and a cottonmouth will, but cottonmouths aren't in this area, though there are a lot of other types of cottonmounths in leavenworth. Rattlesnakes like to take in sun after eating to help digest.
  12. Oly, You accomplished that because we were all praying for you! By the way, how many bible verses can you reciete?
  13. Anyone from here going to be there next week like from Wednsday and then possibly the week after and after that?
  14. Anyone want to go for a little ski today? Like in an hour or two?
  15. Seasonally, the snakes go back when it get's colder, being an ectotherm they get most of their energy from heat, with no heat, they are not active to hunt and avoid predators. When catching rattlesnakes on a warm day they are very fiesty! Day to day, it really depends on the temp because they depend on heat to regulate body temp, so, naturally, in the more southern regions, rattlers tend to be more nocturnal. I don't know what hospitals have. What I know about past studies on the incidences of snake bites are that there was one from like 1950-59, in the PNW there was about 50 bites, and 5? were serious. At the same time, 10 people died from bee stings. I don't know about allergies.
  16. I am fairly certain, thought it may have been a troglodite though. But through the process of elimination I located the sting and identified it. Definitely the venom travelled up the veins. I don't beleive trolodites or hodags are oceanic dwellers.
  17. Oly, I am here for your herpetological inquiries. I believe it may be hard to get a bite in either left or right ventricals. But yes, I think you are right, it would be worse. My favorite place to look -for shnakes- or other herpes? I would not disclose that information in fear of someone trying to harm the snakes. Though in the event of hunting herpes, one of my favorite "road cruisin" it is common practice in the herpetological field to boost the amount of herpetonin in your blood to attract more herpes. So many dumb jokes, so little time. -kat
  18. Oly, One can probably assess the location of the bite by process of elimination. First, look everywhere where the snake did not bite you, everywhere that is left over, that is where he or she bit you. Amount of venom? I don't know, Rattlers are Viperidea family so that means their fangs are highly derived and hollow where the venom is stored. They will just strike and stab, so they don't hold onto the flesh. The venom will degrad your skin tissue, so it probably doesn't matter if you wrap it. I am not into first aid though. Really, more people are hospitalized from bee stings. Drinking and Driving to hospitals. I was stung by a manta-ray a couple months ago, and could definitly tell there was venom running up my leg. So, I imagine one could feel the venom from a rattler. I definitly had many beers on the way to the hospital! Some tips. Rattle snake dens are South-south west facing, they have peculiar habits and tend to all go back to the same dens each year, early to mid April is when they all start coming out of torpor to hang out and bask in the sun. You can usually tell where Shnakes will be in the right size boulders of talus slopes, not too big, not too small. They really enjoy substrate temps around 35degrees C. And are faster around this time because it is warmer outside, in the morning they will be slow b/c it is so cool out. Okay, I could go on forever, have to get back to work. -Kat
  19. I have been helping with catching and collecting data from rattlesnakes this spring around washington. There is one den in Vantage that we caught 17! & a whole lot more we didn't catch! I will try to get the photos of the buckets of snakes. It would be a shame if someone hurt these great animals, get to know them instead, they are so beautiful and we can learn so much about how well they've adapted to their environment. I really hope no one here is as ignorant to have tried to kill them. How often do you really hear about someone getting bit anyway? I've seen some not-so-suprising statistics about the incidence of snake bites and alcohol usage. If you get a snake bite, keep it immobilized and go to the hospital. Many bites don't release venom, but the shot will cost a hefty $2500. Max- The only Rattlesnake that lives around here in the Pacific Northwest is a "Northern Pacific Rattlesnake"- Crotalus viridus oreganus, The Diamondback- Crotalus atrox is southern, like Texas and Chihauhaun/Mojave desert.
